What Do I Need To Buy For My 1999 Buick Regal Gs

1999 Buick Park Avenue Ultra vs 1999 Buick Regal Gs?

Neither one of these cars are fast. The supercharger is used to produce more power from the small engines put in these cars in an attempt to save on fuel, not to produce higher speeds.

The Park Ave is a large near luxury car and the Regal is a mid size sedan. Better is determined by which size car you really need. Do you need a large grandpa car, but the Park Ave. If you need a mid size car for a family, buy the Regal but don't buy either of these cars expecting high performance or speed. You'll be very disappointed if you do.

What mods can I do to my Buick Regal GS?

Depends on if it is supercharged or not. My 97 GS is and it kinda limits what you can do. The computer has everything super controlled to prevent detonation, including cutting the power way down if I don't use a minimum of 91 octane fuel. Focus on upgrading to 4 diode spark plugs and better spark plug wires. Cleaning out the fuel lines and injectors. Making sure the engine is making all the power it can. Like I said, that 3.8 supercharged engine is picky. I do believe there is a Buick regal forum website that will give you waayyyy better answers.
By the way, 83k miles isn't exactly a lot of miles, my 97 Regal RS has 167k miles and my 97 Chevy silverado 1500 has 217k.

O2 sensor buick regal 1999?

I do not own a repair shop, but can answer your question. The previous post by eferrel captures the correct generic information for O2 sensors.

The 1999 Buick Regal comes in two trim levels: LS and GS. There are many more LS so my response is for this model. The GS is a supercharged version which is not as common.

The 3.8L engine has one pre-catalytic and one post-catalytic converter O2 sensor. The 'pre' is located dead center at the back of the engine where the exhaust manifold pipes join, nearly flush with the fire wall. It measures emissions for both engine banks (3+3 cylinders).

The 'post' is immediately downstream of the catalytic converter.

Both of these are tough to access and as eferrel says, a special slotted socket should be used for removal and installation. Rounding off the flats or breaking the O2 is pure misery.

Also, most O2 sensors come with a small packet of anti-seize lubricant. It is necessary to apply this to the O2 threads so that the sensor does not become 'welded' in place due to very high exhaust temperatures. It is very important to not get any of the anti-seize on the sensor nipple, as it will ruin the sensitive internal measuring device when it burns off.

However, the question behind the question is 'why do you want to replace this sensor?'

An O2 sensor can set a code for lean or rich running, and it is correctly performing its function. Often times there is a secondary failure that causes the O2 to actuate. Fuel control is the main reason for O2 setting a code. To test the O2 sensor, a diagnostic computer is required to measure the voltage swing (typically between 0.2 and 0.8 V) and switching speed. A 'lazy' sensor will not switch at the required frequency and set a code.

Best to pay a diagnostic shop to read the codes and determine root cause. Replacing parts is a very expensive way to repair a car! Don't know if this is your situation, but this is a fairly common scenario.
Good luck,
Marc

1986 Buick Regal Limited. My service engine soon light keeps flickering off and on?

In my 1986 Buick Regal Limited my service engine soon light keeps flickering off and on. It's not a constant flickering, it'll flicker for 5-10 seconds then go off for a minute or so then start again. The last time this happened I was low on coolant and filling it up fixed the problem. I have checked oil and coolant and those two do not seem to be the problem this time. The car seems to be running fine at the moment otherwise. I just hate to drive it if there's a problem. Don't want to blow it up! Any ideas?

1999 Buick Regal GS requires premium gas. Can I use a lower octane and supplement with Octane boost?

Octanes are suggested for optimal engine performance. You should use what it calls for to maintain a healthy motor.

"Many high-performance engines are designed to operate with a high maximum compression and thus need a high quality (high energy) fuel usually associated with high octane numbers and thus demand high-octane premium gasoline.

The power output of an engine depends on the energy content of its fuel, and this bears no simple relationship to the octane rating. A common understanding that may apply in only limited circumstances amongst petrol consumers is that adding a higher octane fuel to a vehicle's engine will increase its performance and/or lessen its fuel consumption; this may be false under most conditions — while engines perform best when using fuel with the octane rating for which they were designed and any increase in performance by using a fuel with a different octane rating is minimal or even imaginary, unless there are carbon hotspots, fuel injector clogging or other conditions that may cause a lean situation that can cause knocking that are more common in high mileage vehicles, which would cause modern cars to retard timing thus leading to a loss of both responsiveness and fuel economy. This also does not apply to turbocharged vehicles, which may be allowed to run greater advance in certain circumstances due to external temperatures."

1999 buick regal service engine soon light. how to switch off?

Repair the fault! The vehicle is NOT fine if the MIL (MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT, SES light) is on! Take the vehicle to an auto parts store to have the PCM (powertrain control module) scanned to retrieve any stored DTC's (diagnostic trouble codes) Make sure they give you the DTC NUMBER and then update your findings!

NOTE: As the other poster stated, after the PCM runs the comprehensive component monitor and the bad component fails it's test after the second failure the MIL will be commanded on again so it in your best interest to FIX the failure! Also just by clearing the light by disconnecting the battery you are also losing all of the vehicles "Adaptive strategy" when the battery is disconnected, there for you fuel economy will suck too!

ADDED: The most common reason for the MIL to be on (with no drivability related issues) is for a stored coed, P0442 for a failed EVAP canister vent solenoid valve!

'98 Buick Regal LS Driver Info Center no longer lights up?

I just spoke to my bro who has a 98 Regal GS & he had the exact same problem. The circuit board for that display has a known problem with the resistors literally popping off the circuit board. They have to be replaced and new ones soldered back on. If you are not mechanically inclined for this task, then get a really good electronics person to do it. At a web site called regalgs.org they have the instructions to fix it. But, you'll have to sign up & blog until you get the solution. My bro says this is a very common failing for the Regal in those years. He was able to fix it for about $2 with new parts from Radio Shack. But understand he is a veteran Army electronics expert with 17 years in the service & knows exactly what to do, I don't. He told me & I remembered this issue he had with his car so I called him really fast to answer your question. He's quite the expert on Regals. He own two other Buicks as well. I hope I helped a bit. Cheers!
