What Do Modern Fireplaces Use To Burn Exhaust Gases

What do modern fireplaces use to burn exhaust gases?

The choices I have to choose from are:
catalytic combustor
boiler
mason
furnace

I chose furnace first, but I got that wrong. I know it's not a boiler. That leaves either catalytic combustor or mason, but to be honest i've never heard of any of those. Thanks to anyone who answers in advance.

Modern fireplaces use a ______ to burn exhaust gases.?

FURNACE! cos thats what i use in Minecraft...

bth, i think its a mason, cos I know a boiler makes water hot. And mason sounds like masonry which is what my fireplace is made from, so it must be that.

Can you burn real wood in a gas burning fireplace?

Of all the responses only 1 came close. What you are describing is a log lighter. They are designed to go under the rack to hold the wood & start the fire in place of kindling. It works great especially if the wood is slightly damp. There should be a valve in the floor to the right or left of firplace which uses a key handle to open the valve. 2 things to remember is be sure the flue is fully open & have a match or grill lighter lit at the first hole when turning on the valve. Turn counterclockwise for on & clokwse for off. Be sure to turn it off after th wood has euno bun on its own. Also keep the key away fo any children as this typ of gas apliance does not have any safetys. When it is on you have gas flow. Ifthe flame is too yelow then adjust the air shuter. It will have a set screw that may or may not be loose. You want a blue flame for maximum heat output.

Can it be too cold to use a fireplace?

proper use of the flue, and or damper will mitigate the heat loss. A lot depends on the design of the fireplace, and the materials around it. Well designed firebrick fireplaces will do better than metal ones. It also helps if you have one of those deals that takes a lot of the heat out of the air going up the chimney, but exchanges it, it doesn't let the fire exhaust come in the house. A well designed firebrick fireplace will be deep, the fire is burned in the rear of it, and the smoke travels forward a bit before going up the chimney. The brick gets heated, and even after the fire is out and the flue is closed, it's still putting off heat.

What is the difference between a gas log fireplace and a wood burning fireplace?

I am looking at homes to buy and I want a fireplace. I am not familiar with a gas log fireplace but fairly familiar with a wood burning fireplace. What is the difference between the two different fireplaces? Also, what are the advantages and disadvantages between the two? I don't have tons of money to pay on gas logs. Are they expensive? How do they work?

Thanks in advance for anything you can share with me about fireplaces and helping me make a very important and potentially costly decision.
