What Does These Chinese Symbols/letters Mean

What is this symbol called and what is the meaning of the letters?

According to another tattoo enthusiast on the web:

"Pro free surfer David 'Rasta' Rastovich has it tattooed on his arm. His dad has it on his arm. And his grandfather has it on his arm.

They are all from New Zealand. And the symbol is an ancient symbol for a "waterman". One who surfs, swims, dives, etc.. in the ocean (as well as rivers and lakes). The top of the symbol represents broad shoulders. The sword down the middle represents strength. And the two sides represent right and wrong. All attributes of a true waterman."

What the VC means is beyond me...it could be something personal to Rastovich that he is using to make the tat unique....do you know whether dad and grandad have the vc?

If I were geting this one, I would replace the letters with something meaningful to me alone.

What does this symbol mean?

It looks like the Chinese character 尤 which means "particularly" or "especially", as in the expressions 尤其是,尤甚,and 尤指。

尤 is a Chinese family name.
It has other meanings as long as it collocates with other characters. For example: 效尤 means "imitate someone's bad behaviour", 尤物 is used to call an enchantingly beautiful woman, 尤 means "blame" in the expression 怨天尤人.

When used alone, it is hard to determine the meaning of the single character 尤 , perhaps meaningless.

P.S. Chinese characters contain no letters but strokes.
And it is possible that the symbol in question exists in both Chinese and Japanese, but meanings are different.

What does this Chinese character mean (if it is Chinese at all)?

I guess things happened like that :First there was someone who wanted to make some patterns using Chinese characters.But he\she didn't understand how Chinese were coinaged. This person might thought there was a Chinese alphabet that works the same as English one but only looks different. (Actually, there isn't.)So the designer tried to find a mapping from Chinese to English. He looked up for the dictionary or online translator.He searched for the letter “s”, but there was only one thing in Chinese corresponds with single letter s: the chemical element, sulfur, 硫.Again, our designer thought what he had found are two seperated units. So he removed “石”, and only the right half was left as the pattern.Well, this is just my little reasoning, not attempting to hurt or make fun of anyone. But it is definitely not means the letter S, and even is rarely uesd in daily life.

What are Chinese letters called?

Not sure if you mean Pinyin or 漢字?

What are the japanese kanji symbols for the word sweet and the letter j?

In katakana / hiragana;
ja = ジャ / じゃ
ji = ジ / じ
ju = ジュ / じゅ
je = ジェ / じぇ
jo = ジョ / じょ

Although, literally speaking, if you just want the phonetic representation of the letter 'j' as it's spoken, I suppose you should use 'ジェイ'!

There is no representation of the letters of our alphabet, only phonetics like those above. Katakana is used mainly for foreign words, and hiragana is mainly used for pronunciation of kanji, and for particles. They used to use kanji before katakana was invented, but as each kanji has so many possible pronunciations, and there are many different kanji that can be used to represent the same thing, you'll be lucky to find anyone on here who knows ALL of them ... and is willing to write them down for you! If you want to write your name or something in kanji, the best way is to use a Japanese dictionary that searches for kanji by their pronunciation. Note a few different kanji, and their MEANINGS, and try to use a selection of kanji that doesn't have an offensive or ridiculous meaning...!! (You might be surprised how many people slip up in that respect..!)

Dictionaries where you can search -
This one is only useful if you can type Japanese characters on your computer, but it has the largest database of kanji I've found online so far;
http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/cgi-b...

This site only accepts Latin (English) characters;
http://rut.org/cgi-bin/j-e/dict
(It's working ATM, but often it's down for some mysterious reason.)
You select the meaning you like from your search results, click on the romaji word and see the kanji. (Settings for colours and sizes of the kanji can be altered on the main page that I've given you.)

This site accepts Latin letters or Japanese characters;

As for the word sweet, it depends on the context. Go here,

People, please, what does this symbol mean?

My sister-in-law is about to list a denim handbag for sale which is designed to look exactly like a pair of old jeans shorts, and the logo just says "jeans" and has a symbol which is like a T that is crossed by another stick in the middle horizontally. It resembles a Chinese or Japanese letter character.

If it helps in any way, the brand is KOSIUKO, which sounds Japanese to me.

What do the chinese characters on pf changs leftovers bags mean?

Having never seen them I couldn't know.

But usually chinese put lucky symbols on their products, things like long-life, success. happiness...

How do the Chinese people type if they have so many symbols in their language?

They use a system called Pinyin that allows the use of the roman alphabet for input into a traditional keyboard. You type the pinyin spelling for the sound which the character makes and up comes a list of options of Chinese characters to choose from based on frequency of use. You must be able to recognize Chinese characters in order to type them with accuracy.After a short while, typing Chinese characters is almost as natural as speaking them. Due to the sentence structure and word formation being less complex in Chinese, it’s also quicker to type in Chinese than English.

If the Chinese alphabet has over 50,000 characters, how do you write Chinese on the phone/laptop? There can't be 50,000 keys.

I think the question is faulty, the answersAaron Richmond's answer to If the Chinese alphabet has over 50,000 characters, how do you write Chinese on the phone/laptop? There can't be 50,000 keys.Chris Mackay's answer to If the Chinese alphabet has over 50,000 characters, how do you write Chinese on the phone/laptop? There can't be 50,000 keys.are correct.However the question is wrong.Chinese DO NOT HAVE AN ALPHABET.To transliterate words Chinese into an alphabetic system the Chinese have invented Pinyin.Taiwanese have Zhuyin (BoPoMoFo) input which is another an alphabet.Both of these are used in China and Taiwan respectively to teach proper pronounciation ahead of the learning of Chinese characters.There may be 50,000 Chinese characters, but there are not 50,000 alphabetic “characters” or “letters” in Chinese. That is false. Chinese has no alphabet traditionally. Almost every character represents a word or idea, independent of spelling or pronunciation.This is why Japanese and Chinese can both write: 中国 and it means China but it is pronounced Chugoku, Zhongguo respectively.In fact in Mandarin it is Zhongguo.In Cantonese it is tsong1 gwok1It’s roughly written the same (I’m ignoring the distinction between simplified and traditional characters for now).

How many characters are there in the Chinese language?

Han Language does not have alphabets, it's the only hieroglyph which still exists on this planet.It contains 6 main ways to careate sinograph, which is 象形hieroglyph、指事ideograph、会意ideogram、形声phonogram、转注、假借. (The last 2 are not important)Hieroglyph: for example, 山mountain, 川river, 日sun, 月moon.Ideograph: use symbols to show meanings. For example: 凶inauspiciousi, 凵 stands for trap, 乂 could stand for a person. A person in the trap means inauspiciousi.Ideogram: Two or more single characters combined together to create a new meaning. For example, 鸣warble, 口 means mouth, 鸟 means bird; 肏sodomy, 入 means enter, 肉 means flesh.Phonogram: a hieroglyphical radical combines with a phonetic radical to refer to a new meaning. For example, 樱、篮、齿, etc..
