What Exercise Routines Are Allowed For Someone With Hyperthyroidism.

Hyper thyroid and losing weight.?

People who are diagnosed with hyperthyroidism ,tend to have an increased BMR(basal metabolic rate )i.e that is an increased energy requirementn for your body to carry out its normal functions. As a result they need more calories for their normal functioning. If they eat less calories that their requirement, then they will loose weight,

But if on the otherhand they eat increasingly above their calorie requirement they can still put on weight.

The typical clinical symptom-Is an increased apetite with weight Loss.

People with Hypothyroidism tend to put on more weight.

Regarding foods-Some foods especially the Goitrogenic foods like brussels sprouts, rutabaga, turnips, cauliflower, African cassava, millet, cabbage, can act like the antithyroid drugs propylthiouracil and methimazole in disabling the thyroid function, so they should not be eaten in large amounts by someone on thyroid hormone replacement who still has a thyroid. It's thought that the enzymes involved in the formation of goitrogenic materials in plants can be destroyed by cooking, so thorough cooking may minimize goitrogenic potential.

You haven't mentioned whether you have been started on antithyroid medication for your hyperthyroidsm.

IF you are hyperthroid and want to loose weight,

1)Confirm your diagnosis-TO be hyperthyroid You lab results should show an increase in T3 and T4 hormone level.

If you are Hypothyroid your TSH willl be HIGH.T3 and T4 hormones decreased.

2)Be on the right medication to prevent you from over eating due to an increased apetite from hyperthyroidism

3)Replenish you diet with fresh fruits and vegetables.

4)Have fresh fruits as a snack.

5)Low fat, high fibre diet with fruits and vegetables.

6)exercise- Do Something that you enjoy(waking1/2 an hour - 1 hr)every other day

Why is fatigue a symptom of hyperthyroidism?

Yes, fatigue is a symptom of hyperthyroidism. It is also a symptom of hypothyroidism.

A person has more energy if they are hyperthyroid? Good lord, no! Who told you that? You have absolutely no energy when you have hyperthyroidism. First of all, hyperthyroidism interferes with your sleep. So you are tired all of the time. Plus, hyperthyroidism doesn't give you energy. It makes you produce too much adrenaline. That's a completely different thing from energy. Having too much adrenaline is like having the "fight or flight" response 24/7. You know when you are scared, and your heart leaps out of your chest? Try feeling like that 24/7. It's exhausting. The human body can't function with that kind of an overdose of adrenaline. We evolved to be able to function on that kind of adrenaline for like a minute, until we are out of danger. (Like until the saber tooth tiger is no longer chasing you.) The human body can not handle that 24/7.

And, your muscles basically dissolve away when you have hyperthyroidism. So even if you by some miracle had some energy, you can barely move your body to do anything. And no amount of exercise (if you by some miracle were not too fatigued to exercise) would build muscle. Exercise is counterproductive when you have hyperthyroidism. It burns up more muscle instead of building muscle.

Hypothyroidism? Anyone have it?

I have hypothyroidism. The medicine will make your ability to lose weight equal to that of a person with a normally functioning thyroid once you get the right levels. Getting your thyroid under control can take anywhere from a few times of changing your thyroid medicine amount to going through a bunch of crazy testing to find out what exactly is wrong ( like in my case ).

Make sure you don't change your dosage of your medicine on your own or stop taking your medicine until your doctor prescribes so. This means even if you still feel like crap and/or are still gaining weight, just keep track of your continuing symptoms or new symptoms until you next appointment. Always keep your doctor appointments.

Do your best to exercise daily (even if you don't feel like it).

As for the person who said eat 6 small meals a day, that is the WORST thing you can do as a thyroid patient. You need to eat a LARGE breakfast and then an average-small lunch and dinner.

The metabolism of a thyroid patient needs to be heavily stimulated at the beginning of each day. if you eat small meals your bodies compromised metabolism won't even register that you ate something if you don't kick start it with something big in the morning. Best of luck to you in becoming more healthy.

Can anyone on thyroid medication, lose weight like " normal" ppl?

When you have Hypothyroid (low or non functioning Thyroid), it means your body does not produce enough Thyroid hormone which negatively impacts your metabolism. By taking a thyroid hormone supplement (e.g. Synthroid or Armour), your thyroid levels should return to normal, which means your metabolism will return to normal.

The basic princeples of weight loss are quite simple...burn more calories than you take in on a daily base. It's not magic. You don't need some magic pill to lose weight nor do you need to drink crap like slim-fast. If you want to lose weight and live healthy, then follow the following program:

- High Intensity workouts 4 days a week for 45 mins.
Consumer a balance of Carbs, Protein and Fat
- Limit consumption of sugar and refined carbs, instead focusing on whole grains, high fiber
- Eat high quality protein
- Consume healthy fats like olive oil, fish oils and eliminate trans fats

To get started, you might want to keep a journal of what you eat and how much you exercise. Writing it all down has the following benefits:
- harder to cheat
- helps you track progress
Studies show people who keep some type of diet/exercise journal are much more successful.

Don't let your thyroid issues become an excuse. I too have low thyroid.

PCOS, hyperthryoidism, metformin, synthroid and weight loss.?

While I had hyperthryoidism, I wasn't allowed to exercise at all, not even walk up the stairs to get to my 3rd floor classes so I don't know if that's what made me gain weight again or if it was just the PCOS.

Do you think I will lose the 20lbs per month again and how much weight should I lose total with the help of the metformin?

I will also be prescribed synthetic thyroid hormones which is also known to help people with hypothryoidism lose weight [I will be permanently hypothroid forever with the treatment].

Do you think that I will be able to lose all my excess weight to my normal range of around 125lbs?

Because being overweight is not looked upon kindly in my culture [Chinese] and it has impacted me a lot especially when I eat very healthy [almost vegetarian] and still work out for an hour a day [now that I am able to again] and walk to all my college classes from my dorm [which takes about 10min to and 10min back].

Thank you!!
