What Happens To Your Financial Aid When You Drop Full Time

What happens in college if you drop from full-time to part-time student because of dropping classes?

Most financial aid requires you to be a full time student. Most schools also require you to be a full-time student to live in student housing. If you're on your parents insurance you could lose coverage if you're no longer a full-time student.

What happens with Financial Aid if you withdraw from a class?

It's not so much the financial aid going forward that you need to worry about - it's the financial aid that you already received.

If you received Pell or other grant funding, you will be required to pay at least some portion of that money back to your school if you drop a class.

When you drop a class, the financial aid office is required to use a somewhat complicated formula that determines what portion of your grant funds have been "earned". Your school must return the remainder, the "unearned" portion, to the Department of Education, and the school is required to bill you for that amount. Your school has no leeway to "forget about it". Reimbursement is part of the financial aid rules.

To simplify things a bit, the school will count the number of days in the semester, and the number of days you remained registered for this class. If, for example, you submit your "drop" paperwork on the 27th day of a 130 day semester, you will have been registered for 27/130 of the course, or about 21%.

If the course "cost" $1000, financial aid will determine that you have earned 21% of that $1000 (which is $210), and the remaining $790 would be classified as "unearned". Your school gets to keep a little bit of that $790 to cover their expenses, but most of the $790 has to be returned to the Department of Education, and your school will bill you for a good part of that amount.

Here's where the situation can affect your future aid...

When you owe your school a refund of federal financial aid funds, you are not eligible to receive any additional funds until either:

You have paid the entire balance owed or
You and the school have agreed on a repayment plan, and you begin actively making the promised payments.

Before you drop the course, stop by financial aid, and ask them to calculate how much you are going to be required to repay. One of the complications of receiving financial aid is that it makes it more difficult to drop classes - and especially - to withdraw from school.

I hope that helped you - good luck.

Will I lose my financial aid if I drop a class?

I have been taking an anatomy class and my teacher is almost impossible to please
I have ADHD and it holds me back from alot and the way his test are..i have failed my first 2 tests
There has already been 5 ppl out of my class drop and I am really debating it.
I have tried really hard and I dont know if I can keep on taking this course with this teacher
If I withdraw this class, would I lose the financial aid? I have already used some to pay for classes and books and other college expenses, would I have to pay it back??
I just dont know the consequences of withdrawing a class.

btw..its before midterm, therefore it shouldnt count againts me

How will dropping a class affect my financial aid?

I had 10 units so Im not a full time student. I dropped out of my math class and that was 5 units. Now I have 5 units. I got a refund disbursement because I was barely able to get financial aid. I got $500 for last fall and $1000 for spring (currently). It's been pretty much half way through school. Do I have to pay back the money for the course? And if I do, do you know how much? I appreciate the help.

What happens to my financial aid if I don't pass a class?

I'm going full time right now (13 credits) and I receive financial aid. I can't drop any classes because my financial aid reflects the fact that I go full time, but I don't think I'm going to pass one of my classes. If I get a D or F in a class, what happens to my financial aid? I know I go on Academic Probation, but I don't really know what that means. Will I loose my aid for next semester? How does Academic Probation work?

Thanks.

Would dropping a class mess up my financial aid?

You need a certain number of credits to keep your financial aid for the semester. The answer to your question depends on how many other classes you are taking.

Contact the school's financial aid office for a proper answer.

Will dropping a class effect my financial aid???????

ok so i posted a similar question last night but i didnt put alot details so i im going to post it again.

so im currently taking 14 units, im taking Math, psychology, history and Music appreciation.
right now im having problems with my music appreciation class because since starting that class i havent been doing well. ive tried to raise my grade up but i couldnt and i havent been able to get my grade passed 50%.

so im thinking of dropping it so it wont ruined my gpa. which is at barely a 2.0
the class is a 3 units so if i drop it i will have 11 units to finish with.
will this effect my financial aid for the fall?
i dont think it does because if i appled for the 2012-2013 year, they will have to look at my total units for that school year not this semester right? or am i wrong?

besides i already got all my financial aid money for this semester. in fact i got $1,750 for both semesters, this semester i got paid in two payments, $875 back in January and i got the other $875 just yesterday. so since its in my account they shouldnt take it right?

im so confused, if i dont drop it and fail the class im scared i could be out into academic probation for next school year. i havent gotten any notices this semester but im scared i might get it for the fall.
im trying my best in school but ive been trying to look for a job and its been distracting me from school lately.
so what can happen?
