What Has An Elephant Got Up His Trunk

Why do elephants have trunks?

The answer is Evolution. Elephants have trunks because of evolution. Elephants did not evolve because they wanted trunks. Evolution does not work that way. Any living being does not have features because they want to do something. They can do something because they have that feature.E.g. elephants do not have trunks so that they can drink from a river or a pond, or can pluck grass from ground and eat while standing instead having to kneel down all the time. They can do all of that because they have the trunk.Living beings do not (and can not) grow features they desire (which will be inherited to their offspring, thus cosmetic surgeries are not in question), but the individuals with features that assist in better chance of survival outlive those without them in a population level. Thus after a suitable number of generations, only that feature is seen in populations. This process is continuous and simultaneous, meaning a number of such evolving features might be present in a population at any stage.

Elephant's trunk faced right..?

The statue which u have is the depiction of Lord Ganesha. A very powerful diety and god in Hindu mythology. He is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. He is supposed to be a vighnaharta (the destroyer of all obstacles and bad luck) and sukhkarta (bringer of happiness). Normally all hindu homes have an idol of Ganesha installed at the entrance and worship him inside their homes to bring good luck and get rid of all troubles.

Ganesha is supposed to have got a the head of an elephant after getting killed by his father Lord Shiva. Shiva was enraged of his own son who he did not know as his son. Neither Ganesha knew Shiva as his father. Lord Shiva was not granted entrance to Parvatis residence by Ganesha who was standing guard at his mothers house. Enraged Lord Shiva killed him by beheading him.

On seeing Parvatis grief and anger and on knowing the truth, Lord Shiva instructed his ganas (his disciples) to find the first living thing and use its head to be attached to Ganesha's torso. They found an elephant and brought it back. Lord Ganesha was resurrected.

Lord Ganesha is supposed to a very powerful God and a knowledgeable one at that.

Lord Ganesha is always depicted with his trunk turned towards left of his face. It is supposed to be bad luck to have an idol with the trun towards the right of the face. An idol with trunk to the left side of the face if perfectly fine.

Lord Ganesha is a widely worshipped god in India and some other countries in South east asia. In India Vinayaka Chaturthi (the bday of the Lord Ganesha) is celebrated with much grandeur. U cud see for urself on the web, particularly the celebration in state of Maharashtra in India.

Hope this helps....

u can read more abt him at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ganesha

Elephant trunk is down.... bad luck?

yes it is, I would throw it out or reattach it somehow with the trunk up. but that's just me

edit: should elaborate on superstitions a bit. superstitions are manipulations of the subconscious mind, usually unintentionally by a relation made between ones self and certain actions or objects. so if you've put even a little bit of faith in this keychain you may be setting yourself up. you could also decide for yourself that elephants are good luck in general and go with that if you wanted to.

Could an elephant lift me up with its trunk? Would it have to wrap it around me, somewhere like my waist? Would the elephant find me heavy?

like this?an adult asian or african will find it no problem lifting an average person (70 kg), but little difficult if that person were overweighted, like 250 kgthe elephant lifting woman is young one, not adult.

DO elephants use their trunks as penises?

I'm going to just answer this straight, regardless of what you actually think or know...

No, the do not use their trunks as penises. The use the trunk as a trunk and a penis as a penis.

Here is (maybe) your first site of an elephant penis, conveniently, this one is about to go up the lady elephant's hoohaa. https://www.google.com/search?site=&tbm=... For location, the penis is the slightly smaller trunk between her and his back legs.
The trunk is used for bathing, drinking, breathing, manipulating vegetation (indeed manipulation of objects generally), social interaction, threat displays, olfaction (smelling), courtship, touching...

Regardless of what "and why do the ladies have them" refers to, they have trunks, but not penises.

Mike "Elephants are in the phyla mammalia"
For someone currently pursuing a zoology degree, your knowledge of basic taxonomy is poor. Phyla is plural, Phylum is singular. Mammalia is a Class, not a Phylum, the Phylum is Chordata.

Can an elephant survive without it's trunk?

An injury to the trunk, possible in both the wild and captivity. No trunk, impossible in the wild but possible in captivity.

In the wild injuries to the trunk have caused the death of many elephants and those injuries are usually caused by predators such as lions or man.

The problem is two fold in the wild.
1: In the wild there is no medical care so if there is a serious injury there is a high risk of infection which can kill the animal.
2: It is used for a million and one things... drinking, eating, keeping cool, social behavior, grabbing and moving items, etc. But of course the main problem is not being able to get enough food and water.

I once saw a video of an African Elephant that wondered onto a farm and got tangled in barbwire. The elephant got away but could not get the wire off. By the time they found him it was so infected they ended up ending his poor life.

What is the superstition about an elephant with a trunk down?

Trunk up = brings wealth.Trunk down = brings babies. It’s a powerful charm against theft if it has tusks - great to place facing the door.To attract wealth - “invite” a raised trunk elephant statue/figure home - clean it, place it in front of a Buddha statue or picture - invite Buddha to bless the elephant - offer Buddha a candle, or incense or flowers - after 24 hours - your elephant is blessed - place in a good position to invite wealth into your home - perhaps facing your front door, no lower than waist level when sitting down or higher than eye level when standing up - every morning after waking up & before leaving the house - rub the elephant’s trunk, make wishes for wealth - when you get a sudden windfall - give the elephant a flower, or some candy (you can remove the candy 24 hours later)A bracelet with elephants on it is good, as is an elephant pendant - to enhance your own gentleness, memory, imperturbability, immutability, stability, groundedness, strength, wisdom, tenacity & diligence - all the virtues an elephant possesses.Let me know how things work out.Good Luck.

Why do elephants stick there trunks into other elephant's butt and eat there poop? Look on youtube for clips
