What Is A Good Medium To Big Dog That Would Get Along In An Medium Apartment

Good apartment dog that isnt a toy breed?

Does anybody have any experience with dogs that would be good for apartment living but are not toy breeds? I know that's what most toys are bred for but I really don't care for any of the breeds in that category. Im looking for a small to medium size with guarding ability.

Which dog for an apartment?

If you live in an apartment then you should get a medium dog. Even if you exercise a lot your dog will need a lot of room. That about narrows it down to the Canaan Dog, Norwegian Elkhound, and the Siberian Husky. Here is some information about these three breeds.

The Canaan Dog: Canaan dogs have a strong survival instinct. They are quick to react and wary of strangers, and will alert to any disturbances with prompt barking, thus making them excellent watchdogs. Though defensive, they are not aggressive and are very good with children within the family, but may be wary of other children or defensive when your child is playing with another child. They are intelligent and learn quickly, but may get bored with repetitive exercises or ignore commands if they find something of more interest.

Norwegian Elkhound: Norwegian Elkhounds are friendly, energetic dogs who make excellent companions for active families. Elkhounds love to be outdoors, and look like they are having the time of their lives when they do anything that involves running. They are sensitive animals, in tune with how their owners are feeling and instinctively know when to clown around for a laugh.

Siberian Husky: The Siberian Husky "does not display the possessive qualities of the guard dog, nor is he overly suspicious of strangers or aggressive with other dogs." Their exotic, wolf-like appearance makes Huskies appealing to many people, and their even temperament, love of other dogs and indifference to strangers makes them ideal family dogs. Huskies have a zest for life that is unmatched by few breeds.

I have always liked Siberian Huskys but the choice is up to you. Hope this Helps!

How many dogs can u have in an apartment?

Depends how big your apartment is, how much time you have, how much destruction your apartment can take, and how many dogs your landlord will permit!

EDIT - I live in a first floor flat with two puppies, nine months and nine weeks. It's doable, and not that hard. You have to take them out every two hours for wees and I have to put them on leads because we have a communal garden. Other than that, it's the same. Long walks every day (like most dog owners). As for landlords and finding a new property, landlords will usually consider pets if you offer a higher deposit or write a clause in the contract that says you will get the property cleaned, fumigated and repaired when you leave.
Obviously a house is much preferred and we are actually looking for a place with a garden at the moment, but if you are prepared to do the hard work, there is no reason you can't have a dog or dogs there. Only thing is, if you get a puppy you'll be going out more than 3-4 times in a day.

Bullmastiff - Good apartment dog?

Any breed can be a good apartment dog. :0)
Bullmastiffs are great dogs (I own one), but they are not for everybody
Here is information on the breed that will help you decide whether or not this breed is right for you.

What is a good MEDIUM sized dog?

I am going to be recently moving to a large 2 bedroom apartment and I was wondering what is a good medium sized dog to buy that is a fairly common dog. I was thinking maybe a Staffy or a beagle what are your thoughts?

Are Golden Retrievers good apartment dogs?

no way. They are usually very active and love running around. I have one and she gets very hyper and loves running around everyday. I would suggest a Bichon Frise, Bulldog, Cavalier Kings Charles Spainel, Chihuahua, Dachshund, French Bulldog etc etc. if you really did want a bigger dog, you could get a Staffie, Greyhounds can actually make great apartment dogs, Chinooks, Great Danes are great apartment dogs, as they're usually pretty lazy and don't tend to want to run around a lot.

If you are obsessed with having a Golden Retriever, I suggest going to a dog shelter and getting one thats older, and just wants to lounge around with not much exercise.

Or you could just get a -

Cat
Hamster
Gerbil
Chincilla
Hedgehog
Rat
Mouse
Degu
Guinia Pig
and many more! If you want a bird, try get one that doesn't make so much noise..
