What are some good nonfiction books?
Spook, Stiff or Bonk by Mary Roach - about the afterlife, the life of cadavers and sex, respectively. I enjoyed Stiff the most. The Hot Zone by Richard Preston - about Ebola on American soil. Lost City of Z by David Grann - the author retraces the footsteps of Percy Fawcett in the search for legendary El Dorado. All Over But the Shoutin' by Rick Bragg - a humorous and poignant look at growing up poor in rural Alabama. Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes - the author's look at living in rural Italy. David Sedaris' collections of autobiographical essays - funny and poignant, Me Talk Pretty One Day was my favorite. Black Like Me by John Howard Griffin - the author took tanning pills to pass himself off as a black man during the late 1950's. Parts are dated, but there is still a timeless message. Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain - interesting and disgusting look at food and the food industry told with Bourdain's brand of humor. A Beautiful Mind by Sylvia Nasar - biography of John Forbes Nash. The Monster of Florence by Douglas Preston - the search for a serial killer in the hills around Florence, Italy. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by Jon Berendt - behind the scenes look at Savannah Georgia during a murder trial. Picking Cotton by Jennifer Thompson-Cannino and Ronald Cotton - prison memoir of Cotton who was unjustly accused after his co-author picked him out of a lineup.

What's a good nonfiction book?
No biographies or self-help books, etc. Nothing with a plot. Something with a thesis. Examples are "Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking" and "The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference" Books like that. Something short is preferred.. Under 150-200 pages? It's due Tuesday. (I realized today that I needed to change my book)

Is "Black Beauty" a non-fiction book?
No, I'm afraid not. It is fiction, told from the point of view of the horse. If you like animals though, there are lots of good non-fiction books about animals. You might try the 'vet' series of James Herriot for example, as in It Shouldn't Happen to a Vet, If Only They Could Talk, etc. There is quite a lot about horses in them. Gerald Durrell's books about his animal collecting expeditions are good too, though horses don't feature in them. The Overloaded Ark, The Bafut Beagles,Three Singles to Adventure, Two in the Bush, and A Zoo in My Luggage are all very good ones. 'A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains' by Isabella Bird, is an account by a Victorian lady explorer of her adventures in the Rocky Mountains, horses do feature in the book as she travelled on horseback. 'Through Conemara in a Governess Cart' by E.O Somerville and Martin Ross, is a book by two Victorian ladies who explored the west of Ireland in a cart drawn by a donkey. It is a very amusing book, and a donkey is pretty close to a horse! 'The Days I Knew' by Lillie Langtry is an interesting autobiography by a famous Victorian actress and beauty. There is a little bit about horses in it. 'Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man' by Siegfried Sassoon is a very interesting autobiography of a youth growing up in the years before WW1. There is a lot about horses in it.
