What Is Causing My Puppy To Have Diarrhea

If a puppy eats too fast can that cause diarrhea?

Typically, if your puppy has diarrhea you are feeding them too much and if their poop is hard you are feeding them too little. If your puppy is under 12 weeks old you should be soaking his food anyway to prevent bloating (which can kill them). Soaking the food will not prevent diarrhea or make it easier on the stomach though. You can give plain mashed pumpkin to solidify the poop and put large (clean) rocks in the dish to slow him down while eating.

Add: Your vet is probably right about needing to eat 3-4 cups a day BUT the vet probably gave that advice to you assuming you were feeding him the normal crap- Purina, Pedigree, Ol' Roy etc. Read what the feeding guidelines are on the back of the package and do that remembering that each dog is different and could need a little more or little less food than what the package states. I think this is the best bet since you're certain the puppy does not have worms or giardia but remember that dogs need to be dewormed at least 4 times before the age of 6 months. :-)

Good luck!

What would cause my puppy to have diarrhea when we haven't changed his food at all?

We just got our puppy less than a week ago. He came with a little bit of food but not enough to make it through the night so we stopped and bought him more, but we made sure to buy him the same food that he was on. We have city water, same as the people that had him before us. So the only thing that has changed is his actual environment.

The first night he was with us, he had a normal bowel movement, but the next day the diarrhea started. It got better briefly, but now it has been persistent for 3 days. The wierd thing is that he is only about 3-4 months old, and he actually makes it outside everytime. He hasn't had any accidents in the house at all, so he seems to be able to control it despite the fact that it's coming out of him like water; poor little guy.

Anyway, we have been wanting to change his food, the previous owners had him on an older puppy food. It's called Purina Little Bits, which is for puppies around 6 months to 1 year. We would like to put him on the Purina for Puppies instead. Now we're afraid to switch him and risk upsetting his poor little belly any more than it already is.

Other than the diarrhea though, he acts completely normal and healthy. He is very playful, and he eats and drinks normally. Somebody told us that dogs can have irregular bowel movements due to anxiety (such as from moving to a new family), just like people do, but this seems to be really persistent. Does anyone have any suggestions? With older dogs, I know that hamburger and rice works well, but he's so young, I'm just not sure.

What causes your puppy to have diarrhea for a week?

Take him or her to the vet. It could be that your puppy has an allergy to its food, or it may have some type of virus or bacteria in its system that’s causing the diarrhea.

Does wet food cause puppies to get diarrhea?

My dog is almost 8 months. She used to just be fed puppy kibble & occasionally puppy milk.
We've started mixing a little bit of wet food in with her kibble. She loves it but ive noticed shes been having diarrhea and more sloppy stools.
Is this normal? Do you think the new food is causing this? Should we continue to give her wet food?
Thanks guys, youre always really helpful!

Could a "kong ziggie" be the cause of my puppies diarrhea?

I have a 10 week old shih tzu puppy. I have had him for awhile and i began giving him ziggies in his kong chew toy 3 days ago. He eats a whole one almost everyday, he loves them. yesterday i noticed his stool was beginning to become very soft. today he has been having diarrhea and goes almost every hour. Has anyone else had an experience with the kong ziggies giving their dog diarrhea. ( i havent changed food or done anything that would cause it. he is up to date with his shots as well )

Why does my new puppy have diarrhea?

When did you get your puppy, and from where? A breeder, pet store or shelter? How old is he, and what is his diet now?My top guesses for your puppy’s diarrhea, based on my years working as a veterinary technician, include:Unresolved parasites, roundworms are passed from Mom to puppy at birth and pups need to be dewormed 2–3 times once they are big enough to tolerate the treatmentDietary changes without a slow transition, possible if you started feeding him a new food than what he was eating before you took him home. Also the transition from Mom’s milk to solid food can be difficult for a brief period. Also, pica - the behavior many puppies have of chewing and eating things they should not, human foods, medications, or any number of things that can mess up their GI processes. (Swallowing objects that cause a blockage would not first cause diarrhea - vomiting is the earliest sign of this, a different problem…)Parvovirus. This one is the most critical condition a puppy can have and if not treated can be fatal. Parvo is included in the early vaccine series for all puppies, but if the puppy hasn't been properly vaccinated and comes in contact with an environment harboring viral germs or another dog with the virus, it is highly contagious. It requires intensive inpatient treatment and does not resolve quickly.Go see a vet if the diarrhea continues please.

How can I treat my 7 week old puppy's diarrhea?

As others have said, your puppy will need to see a vet. Puppies have very weak immune systems and will pick up bacteria and parasites easily. You’ll need to have a fecal test done to know what is causing the issue. Your doctor will prescribe an appropriate medication. In the meantime, as someone else mentioned, pumpkin is good for an upset tummy. Make sure your dog is getting plenty of water as well to replenish what they’ve lost. And get to the vet as soon as possible. In the future, try to keep your puppy away from common areas used by other animals until they’ve had all their shots. This was very difficult for me since I live in a city and don’t have the luxury of a yard. But bacteria and parasites live in areas contaminated by dog feces long after the feces has been picked up. Meaning, even if the ground looks clean, there could still be something lurking that will make your dog sick. The good news is, it gets easier in a few months. My dog is now 3 years old and hasn’t been sick since she was a puppy. But boy, I will never forget the explosive puppy diarrhea that comes with Giardia. Good luck to you and your pup.
