What Is The Correct Way To Ask A High School Teacher For A Letter Of Recomendation

Can I ask my high school teachers to write letter of recommendation for my graduate studies?

If your high school teacher has been following your work from the years that you were his or her student to where you are now, then possibly. Typically letters of reference are most effective when written by people who are the most current in your life. If, however, your high school teacher inspired you to pursue the course of study that you continue to pursue into your advanced studies even now, and especially if that teacher has had a chance to review your work — I can definitely see an argument for including that letter in your application folio. It demonstrates your continuity and tenacity and passion. To be safe, however, I’ll offer this: the other two recommendations should be strong and from people involved in your present life. A killer letter from your high school teacher, in the context of two lukewarm endorsements from the people who are working with you now, is going To look really suspect.Does this make sense? I hope it helps. Thanks for the a2a!

Can you ask your high school teacher to see the recommendation letter they wrote for you 5-10 years afterwards?

You can certainly ask....I would recommend that you do so in writing, with a reason a bit clearer that "curiosity."  It might be best to ask more directly - "What was the potential that you saw in me, if any?" and explain why you want to know.As a teacher and mentor, I routinely forward copies of the recommendation letters that I write to person who is the subject of the letter.(In some cases, I do this before sending it, offering them a chance to make it more focused, as when the letter is requested to achieve a specific goal. e.g. - Getting a job in a particular field)If I were to somehow omit this step, I would certainly be willing to forward a copy, since I -always- save them.I honestly cannot see why someone willing to write a letter in the first place would be unwilling to share it, especially since your stated reason (which you should share) seems more consistent with some effort at self-improvement.Most teachers and mentors are glad to support this lifelong effort to grow!Good luck with that!!

How do you ask a teacher for a letter of recommendation?

You simply go up to whichever teacher you think will write an excellent letter for you, and ask him/her, "I was wondering if you could please write me a letter of recommendation?" and I'm sure your teacher will be happy to write for you.

I teach English to juniors in high school, and I love writing letters for them. It's amazing to watch your students blossom into who they have become, and all I want is for my students to succeed. Most of your teachers probably feel the same way (most, at least). Don't be shy- just ask!

Good luck!

Can I ask a retired teacher for a letter of recommendation?

Your retired teacher is a good person to ask for a recommendation. As a retired teacher I have written many of them. The qualifications don't go away and the teacher will be thrilled that you asked. Not only that, but now he has the time to write you a good letter too. Don't forget to remind him of your accomplishments and what you did in his classroom. Retired teachers have taught a LOT of kids - so you will have to write out some of the things that you were good at. Good luck!

How should I ask my teachers for letters of recommendation?

1. I would choose teachers with whom you have a strong, personal relationship. You certainly want to select teachers whose classes you have done well in. I would simply approach them before/after class and ask "Would you be comfortable writing a letter of recommendation for me? I am applying for ...." If this is not feasible, send them an e-mail asking if they would be comfortable writing a letter of recommendation and explaining why you would like a letter from them.
2. It is customary to give the teacher an envelope in which to place their recommendation. Depending on the program you are applying for, you may need to address and stamp it separately and have the teacher sign the seal (therefore preventing any tampering with the envelopes contents). Some programs will ask that you have the professor mail the envelope separately, while some request that you include it in your general mailing.
3. Remember that the teacher is doing you a favor by writing a letter of recommendation. Try to make it as easy for them as possible, including explaining what the program is you are applying for. Do not try to dictate what the teacher says. If they ask you, be prepared to talk up a few competencies you have demonstrated in their class or activities that you feel are relevant.

Good Luck!

Can letters of recommendation for law school be written by high school teachers?

I strongly discourage you from using a letter from a high school teacher as a law school recommendation letter.

Law school admissions committees do NOT want to know what you did in high school, or what your high school teachers think of you. They DO want to know how well you have taken advantage of university-level courses. Your high school teachers, even those with whom you have a close relationship, have not been witness to your academic development over the past three or four years. They are not able to testify to your abilities in the arenas of close reading, clear writing, and critical thinking, because they have not read (and graded) the papers you have written in your field of interest (major).

Finally, it is not necessary for you to have a "close relationship" with a college professor in order for you to get a great letter of recommendation. Just choose professors who taught courses in which you got excellent grades, and in which you regularly participated in discussion.

Here's a fantastic description of how to get the best possible letters from your college professors. Points 5 and 6 will be of the most help to you.
