If you could introduce me to one Spanish song, what would it be?

There are way too many. I’d probably go out of the trodden path to suggest some lesser-known (among non-Spanish speakers) singer-songwriters, and it’s a very hard choice to give you one. It’s unfair even to give you only three, but that’s what I’ll do:Al alba, by Luis Eduardo AuteEl sitio de mi recreo, by Antonio VegaSólo le pido a Dios, by León GiecoAl alba was published in 1978. Franco had died a few years before, but the transition to a Democracy was still in the works. Aute managed to break through the (still lingering) censorship and publish a song that, disguised as a love song, was an attack on death penalty (“[…] Presiento que tras la noche, vendrá la noche más larga […]”)Antonio Vega’s was (a lung cancer took him away rather young) a brilliant composer, and a tortured soul, riddled with drug problems. Maybe because of that he was able to bring us a soothing song like El sitio de mi recreo.Sólo le pido a Dios is maybe the best known of the three. Mainly because it’s been featured by a ton of other people, including Bruce Springteen. Which makes it full circle, because Gieco got inspired by Springteen when writing it :-) He wrote the song in a time of saber-rattling between Chile and Argentina as they were going through the latest iteration of an almost century long conflict about borders. It became relevant again a few years later, when Argentina and the UK clashed over the Falkland/Malvines.Bonus track: I’m not a huge fan of Joaquín Sabina, but you should listen to his Y sin embargo.Edit: I decided to give only one slot to Antonio Vega and added the one from Gieco instead.
