What Is Your Honest Opinion Of Those Who Self-harm

What is your opinion about people who self-harm?

I wrote a feature article for Houston Family Magazine on the topic of self-injury. After the research I did for the article, I have to say I think that people who self-harm are misunderstood and mistreated. The public at large assumes that self-injury is a ploy for attention. As a result, the people who self-injure end up being judged for their behavior, rather than treated for the cause(s) of their behavior. As I report in my article, “SI statistics are notoriously hard to peg, partly because so many instances of SI go unreported. There is a shame factor associated with self-harming, strongly tied to the public’s inability to sympathize, much less empathize, with those who engage in these behaviors.”The public perception must be changed to recognize SI as an illness, not a tactic. The stigma needs to be wiped so more cases are reported, enough to fuel research, approaches to counseling, treatment, and a cure.

What is your honest opinion on transgenderism?

It is plain and simple, a mental disorder. Transgenderism is entirely based within one's brain. And we as a people should not encourage these people by treating their disease as if it is the same as one's physical/biological gender.

QUESTION FOR KOREANS: What do you think of self-harm?

First, I dont have to imagine because I know what you are saying is true lol.

Second, Korean are not the only one that themselves. People around the world do it as well. USA, China, and other places.

Third, these people are called emo. Also known as emotional. When they get depressed or angry they get mental to find a way to remove that pain by cutting themselves which is pretty stupid. But I am not saying your girl friend is stupid...

Fourth, it doesn't matter what she did when she was young. It all matters what you think of her now. Is she good looking? nice person? crazy?

It all depends on you. But if it were me I would try to talk to her cuz I know psychology. I would ask her why she did it and then see if she's still a good person now... don't let the pass freak you out.

What do guys think of self harm scars?

I was wondering what guys think of self harm scars? Mainly. But I guess it can be anyone in general. I'm asking mainly guys opinions or girls with the experience of guys because lately all I can think about when I see my scars is 'No one will ever love me' I feel so stupid afterwards, and I don't know what to do. I'm tired of coming up with scenarios in my head, and thought I might as well just come out and proceed to ask. So here I am, I'm not going to say no rude comments or anything along those lines, because even if it will hurt I would appreciate real honest answers, and if they fall under the rude catagory so be it. I also would like to ask for people of the younger age to answer this. I am female and 15 years old and would like this question to mainly stick within the opinions of other teens, but if you feel you have something to share that will benifit me, and you are not within your teenage years, that is okay and you can answer. Not that me saying not to do so
would stop you. Anyways, thanks for taking the time to read this, please be honest. Alsi I didn't really know what catagory this fell under, I apologize.

What do doctors think about self harm cuts?

I see a wide range of patient ages. I sometimes see young children with labial adhesions. Many of my patients are elderly. But I think my favorite patients are my adolescents. They can be a fun group to know and it's nice watching them change and grow up.Being an adolescent can be incredibly hard. It can be a dark time emotionally. I was bullied pretty intensely in the eighth grade, so much so that I changed school systems. I know where some of those dark thoughts and urges come from.About every 3 to 4 weeks I notice cutting scars on one of my young patients. Usually they are old and healed. Occasionally they are fresh. It becomes a point of discussion. How long ago? What feelings and situations were being treated with this action? My patients who engage in this behavior are trying to treat themselves. They are treating emotional injuries with a physical action. I hear a lot of people scoff at this behavior as a 'cry for help', but as a cry for help it can be very effective. It can get you to the psychiatrist if your tears didn't.If my patients are still depressed or still have urges to self harm, I get them to an appropriate psychiatrist. I sometimes treat depression in adult patients but I do not in children and adolescents. They are already a population at higher risk for suicide, and I want an expert helping them.
