I've been searching around Monster.com, CareerBuilder.com, and pretty much any other major job-finding site you can think of. I'm trying to get a job as either a waitress or a cashier. Obviously the category for waitressing is Restaurant Work/Food Service. But I don't know what category cashiering falls under. Is it Customer Service, Sales, or something else? At the most basic level, a cashier is responsible for handling transactions where money is exchanged for a good or service. The cashier will most likely find themselves working some sort of cash register to keep track of all money that comes and goes during their shift. At the end of the cashier’s shift it is typical (and highly recommended) that the cashier be involved in the reconciliation of the money brought in during that shift. Some basic math (addition and subtraction) is needed for reconciliation, and is very helpful overall.Even though the cash register (or equivalent transaction machine) handles all addition and subtraction of money for each transaction, in the end it is just a machine and only does what the user tells it to do. This is why common sense and basic math are very important traits of a good cashier.A cashier job is one of many “customer-service” type positions. A friendly disposition will go a long way, even when the customers are not-so-friendly.Lastly, do not be surprised if you are expected to do other tasks besides just handling transactions on the cash register. If you work for a clothing retailer, you may be asked to fold clothes, re-arrange shelves or racks, take out the trash, etc. If you work in a convenience store, you may also be required to sweep, mop, re-stock coolers, etc.I enjoyed my seven years as a cashier at various gas stations/ convenience stores.
