What Other Data Could Be Collected From A Fossil Specimen To Help Identify Its Evolutionary History

Are there any "holes" in the Theory of Evolution?

To set the record straight...I am not a "Creationist", I am a Christian.
In the arena of evolution/vs/creation, I am "agnostic"...that is, I am not sure, either way. I am curious.
I've not seen any serious evidence to prove to me that evolution is, indeed, a fact...to me, it is an open question.
Why, for instance, is this "common ancestor" so difficult to track down? Common sense tells me that it would have to have been some sort of ape-like creature...but what did it evolve from, and why? How can you be sure such a creature ever existed? Where did he go?
These are questions that are very real, to me, and mean much more than whether or not I'm gonna need a new flu shot because the astute li'l critters that cause flu adapted to the vaccine I had last year....
REAL answers would be appreciated, but if you just HAVE to be rude, crude, and not to shrewd, all you prove to me is that you really don't have any answers, either, or you would give them.
Thank you.

Charles Darwin believed the basic forces in evolution to be..?

The answer is (1) selection and MUTATION because he realised that animals whose genes mutate and enable them to survive more succesfully:

'Darwin concluded that species evolved over long periods due to what he called natural selection. There may be differences in the offspring of an organism. These differences are called mutations. We generally think of mutations as harmful, such as birth defects, but a mutation is simply an alteration of the genetic information of an organism. Some mutations are good. A child might be taller or stronger than his or her parents.

Darwin’s theory suggested that organisms evolved to fit their environment based on natural selection. If a mutation was good, the organism lived and contributed the mutation to the gene pool of its offspring. If the mutation was bad, the organism was more likely to die before contributing to the gene pool. Over billions of years, these mutations slowly produced the world we know today. '

Hope this helps!

What did Darwin learn from the fossil record?

He was pretty impressed that he found fossils of creatures which no longer existed.... that was certainly food for thought.
