How do you check how much RAM is on your MacBook?
If you want to see just how much RAM is installed, go to About This Mac by clicking on the Apple logo. The amount of RAM should be displayed right there (as Memory). If you want to see how much RAM is in use/is free, there are several applications you can download from the App Store, such as MemoryKeeper, or off the Internet.

Do I need an 8GB RAM for my MacBook Pro?
I find this question intriguing due to the fact that no new MacBook Pro is sold with less than 8GB ram. It is technically the lowest spec is the pro line. However, there is nothing wrong with 'only' 8gb. Perhaps you have an older model MacBook and are wanting to upgrade ram. To that, I say it depends on your computing needs but it certainly isn't going to hurt anything. My wife's MacBook Air has 4gb and it is pretty lacking. I would upgrade it in a heartbeat if I had the chance. As an owner of a MacBook with 8gb RAM I must say that for most (ok basically everything I need at this time) tasks it is more than sufficient. OS X is very effecient at memory management. Often times you will find that your ram is nearly full in the activity monitor, but your computer will always make the needed room in the ram by dumping what isn't needed. Remember, unused memory is wasted memory. Even if you have 16gb ram, it is generally going to be mostly full. OS X is designed that way. The biggest tell on weather you need to upgrade to more ram is if your computer runs slowly.
What specific kind of RAM should I buy for my MAC?
Any DDR2 SODIMM RAM will work fine.
How much RAM do I need on a new MacBook Pro?
Windows Based machines have given new Mac users a misconception that more RAM=better performance. Macs platform isn't made to utilize RAM like Windows platform. It's just different. Unfortunately, newer laptops are integrating RAM, and it's not easily upgradable. So at the end of the day, you have to think about value years later if you decide to sale or trade. That said, 5 years from now, a program may call for more than 8 gigs of RAM to be installed(hard to imagine I know). So more is always always better. Good luck!
