What's the fastest way to become a counselor?

Bachelors degree...there are some programs you can fast track through with a degree relating to sociology or psychology. YOu really should get a degree that is going to assist you in the Masters program. Co-hort groups are ideally for adults and are usually at night. They are usually 18 months to a year. Its very hard to say a fast way to become a counselor considering credible programs require you do clincial hours.

Addiction counseling or social work?

I am torn between going for my masters in addiction counseling or my masters in social work. Right now, I am almost done with my bachelors in sociology. I was pretty set on going for addiction counseling until I learned that you could get an M.S.W. and specialize in addiction. So, I have two questions.

1) What are the pros and cons of these two degree programs?
2) How exactly do you become an addiction specialist after you have an M.S.W?

Thanks!

How do you become a school counselor?

There are various kinds of schools counsellor, but generally it's difficult to just 'become' one, because most of the information you can swot-up on schools is rather dry and does not communicate the reality of life at different schools that lies under the facts and tables. Similarly, one can only really build meaningful contacts at different schools after spending significant time working as a teacher or working within the school system in some capacity. This means that if you recommend a certain school to a family you really understand what you are talking about, and if you were to introduce a family to a school, the school knows to trust your judgement and integrity. It also means that when you engage with students, you are able to judge them accurately and know what to look for and how to negotiate unhelpful factors - such as parental hype or a a student's lack of confidence, for example - and identify what does or doesn't lie beneath.

Should I do my Masters in Criminal Justice or Social work?

with a MSW you can be a therapist (even have your own practice), work in schools, with doctors, in hospitals, etc. I even know MSW's who work in hospitals with juveniles to prevent them from becoming a juvenile delinquent.. With CJ you are locked in to the CJ system..Of course, you always have your BSW to fall back on ..if you want to work like as a parole officer or something..go with CJ..personally I would stick with SW because even SW work in the CJ system.. My major is social work with minor in criminal justice.

Bachelor in Psychology or Social Work?

O.K. In most states, you cannot be a therapist (heretofore referred to as "clinician") with a Bachelor's in Psychology or Social Work. In order to be a clinician, you must have at least a Master's degree in either one. With a Master's in Psychology, you'd be a "psychologist." With a Master's in Social Work, you could be (depending on your concentration) an LCSW, which stands for "Licensed Clinical Social Worker." Of course, with a Master's in Social Work, you could concentrate in other areas, such as Administration, Political Advocacy, Child Welfare, Gerontology, Medical Social Work, Research, etc.

In my opinion, Social Work is a much more broad and eclectic program and, thus, much more useful personally and professionally. In order to earn the degree, most programs require courses in psychology, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, and philosophy. Also, because the Bachelor's level education is so broad, the job possibilities are nearly endless. One can do quite well with only a Bachelor's degree; the main reasons to continue with a Master's or Ph.D. are administration, clinical, or professorial aspirations.

Psychology is what it is: specialization (which makes it narrow). On the other hand, if you want to be a researcher or other specialist, like a neuro-psychologist, you definitely need the focus and concentration of a Psych program. In order to do anything in psychology, you pretty much have to have at least a Master's degree.

Finally, you'll find your way no matter what program you choose. I mean, I know a lot of social workers with MBA's. I know a few psychologists, but the Bachelor's-level Psych people I know don't really have jobs in the field. Of the two I know, one is a child care teacher, probably still making single digits per hour, and the other runs a college bookstore.

Good luck.
