What Was Coolidge

What was Calvin Coolidge's motto for America?

"Let Well Enough Alone"

Was Coolidge a racist?

In so far as I know Coolidge was in many ways a pioneer who lead the way in attempting to right the wrongs of the past going as far as to extend citizenship to Native Americans living in the US (The Synder Act of 1924), oppose the KKK, and take a stand on basis of principle in support equal rights for Blacks.Coolidge personally believed that racism was a blight upon America’s good name and the fundumental principles which had characterized its founding ideas of Life, Liberty, and The Pursuit of Happiness.

What was the role of President Coolidge?

Role in history? Coolidge was and is an icon for the small-government faction of the Republic Party. He was a strong libertarian and capitalist who believed that the economy would function best if taxes were low and regulation was minimal. The Coolidge administration was marked by strong but short-lived economic growth and generally a scandal-free government. While he believed in helping people and promoting civil rights, his limited view of the executive branch of government led to him not taking much of a stand, instead preferring to sit back and let the nation run itself. In terms of foreign policy he was reluctant to take part in the new alliances forming in post-WWI Europe. In history classrooms he’s an important figure to learn about, especially when discussing the 1920s, but overall can be overlooked in the grand scheme of things. This isn’t because he was a bad or unimportant president. It’s just that small-government leaders generally don’t shake things up on their own, and the focus shifts to local politics.

What were the failures of the Coolidge presidency?

Very few. In fact, he was quite successful and the United States fared quite well while he was in office. His defenders are becoming more numerous as people, more recently with the use of the internet, have come to appreciate him and have less respect for FDR, who prolonged The Great Depression and left us sitting ducks in the Pacific in World War II. Coolidge was known as Silent Cal so if he had any failures it was perhaps that he should have talked a bit more. In any case, he was a good president.

What was the goal of president Coolidge's policies?

The first order of business for Coolidge was to clean up the mess left from the political scandal left by his predecessor Warren G. Harding and his administration, namely, the Teapot Dome Oil Scandal. Coolidge pressed for investigations and prosecutions relating to scandals involving members of the Harding administration.
Coolidge was re-nominated to run for a full term of his own in the Summer of 1924. But, he suffered a terrible, personal blow with the unexpected death of his 16 year old son, Calivn, Jr., from blood poisoning. He had won tennis shoes without tennis socks and had developed a blister on his foot. Coolidge said, at the time, that any joy he had in holding the office of the presidency, died with his son. The Democrats, meeting at their Convention in NYC, were anything but unified because it took a marathon session of 103 ballots to name a canddiate, John W. Davis, to oppose Coolidge. The president went on to win a convincing win in November 1924.
In 1925, US Marines were sent to Nicaragua after outbreak of civil war. In 1927, the president sent Henry Stimson to work out a compromise, but General Augusta Cesar Sandino launched guerilla war thst lasted until US withdrawal of US troops in 1933.
In 1926, Coolidge vetoed the McNary-Haugen farm bill, which called for dumping of agricultural surpluses. Vetoed the relief measure again in 1928.
On August 2, 1927, despite strong party support, announced that he did 'not choose to run for president in 1928."
In 1928, The Kellogg-Briand Pact, an agreement to renounce war as an instrument of national policy was signed in Paris by 15 nations on August 24.

What were the successes of the Coolidge presidency?

Coolidge restored public confidence in the White House after the scandals of his predecessor's administration, and left office with considerable popularity. As a Coolidge biographer put it, "He embodied the spirit and hopes of the middle class, could interpret their longings and express their opinions. That he did represent the genius of the average is the most convincing proof of his strength." What was Coolidge: Austerity and Integrity?

Coolidge believed in small government, and basically did not do much while in office when it came to regulating business, etc. Since his time in office was part of the Roaring Twenties, I don't know that you could call it an austere time.

Warren G. Harding and his administration were corrupt--see the Teapot Dome Scandal. Coolidge, who in his personal manner was upright and honest, brought integrity back to the White House.
