When Do Dry Roasted Peanuts Go Bad After Opening

(when) do dry roasted peanuts go bad after opening?

I opened a big plastic thing of dry roasted peanuts and had a few handfuls and they tasted a little bit funny. They have some white dust on them but I figured it wasn't anything concerning. I opened them about 3-4 weeks ago at most.

Were they okay to eat or did I just make myself sick?

What happens when dry roasted peanuts expire?

Can dry roasted peanuts go bad?

not suddenly in only 13 days time.

Why do grocery store peanuts taste so bad compared to wholesale peanuts?

Intuitively, I’d say freshness, or in the case of grocery stores and certain supermarkets, a lack thereof.Wholesale food such as nuts have a high turnover coming either directly from farmers or in longer supply chains via distributors. Those nuts are likely to be locally sourced with fewer food miles and sold mainly in their hulls which aid in preservation.Supermarket peanuts almost certainly have longer supply chains than wholesalers meaning they’re already older and thus less fresh than locally sourced ones. In fact, some may for example be imported from as far afield as China, India and Nigeria* increasing time between harvest and store delivery, especially if manufacturing processes such as de-hulling, salting, etc are involved. All nuts contain a lot of fat including groundnuts such as peanuts , that aren't really nuts at all but a type of legume. Fats go rancid and at different rates in a process known as rancidification**. Like stale chips/crisps where the oil has gone rancid, unsalted butter past its prime or nuts with questionable shelf life, flavour and even edibility is compromised by the freshness and quality of the fats. Apart from enhancing flavour, salt is added to peanuts and the like as a preservative. If it’s not possible to source your peanuts from a local wholesaler or farmer’s market, then choose unhulled nuts from the supermarket and process and season them yourself. If that’s too much hassle, go for hulled peanuts with the skins still on or dry-roasted salted peanuts. Avoid peanuts or any other nuts from in-store mini hoppers as they have been exposed to a lot of light and air, both key causes of oxidisation and rancidity.Source: Changes In Fats During ProcessingFurther ReadingHow to Tell If Peanuts Are Rancid | LEAFtv*Top Peanut (Groundnut) Producing Countries**Rancidification - Wikipedia

Does planters dry roasted peanuts cause diabetes?

All nuts are good for people, if they do not have a lot of salt and/or sugar on them. Nuts are a great source of protein for everyone including diabetics. I am diabetic and often eat planters dry roast peanuts. A heaping tablespoon is a serving...too many and you get too much fat. By the way the cause of diabetes is a malfunction of the pancreas and can be made more likely by excessive soda pop, white flour and sugar in one's diet.

How long do peanuts last?

Shelled Peanuts
Shelled peanuts should be stored in airtight containers, ideally in a refrigerator or freezer in order to preserve freshness. They will remain fresh for three to six months.

Unshelled Peanuts
Peanuts still in their shell need to be stored in a cool, dark place away from moisture. If stored in the refrigerator they will maintain their freshness for up to nine months.

Boiled Peanuts
One of the drawbacks of boiled peanuts is that they have a very short shelf life unless refrigerated or frozen. If you leave them out on the kitchen counter for 3 to 4 days, they become slimy and smelly!

Roasted Peanuts
Shelf Life: As long as they remain in a vacuum pack, they should be good for one year.
