That is a system wide glitch... I found this message for "Small Business" account owners which makes it clear that Yahoo is aware of the problem and working on it. Permanently deleted contacts still show up in search window when you type a part of the email or name?
Hi Nancy P, Autocomplete suggests email addresses as you type, based on contacts from your address book and contacts that you have sent messages to in the past. Suggestions are sorted in order or relevance, rather than in alphabetical order. While you can't turn off the Autocomplete feature, you can stop a contact's email address from appearing in it. To delete a contact from the Autocomplete suggestions: 1. When an unwanted contact appears as a suggestion, hover over it in the suggestions list. 2. Select the "X" to the right of the name. 3. A pop-up appears asking if you are sure you want to delete the email address. Select Delete. The contact's email address no longer appears as a suggestion in the Autocomplete list. Note: If the email address you are deleting is also in your Yahoo! Contacts, removing it from Autocomplete automatically removes the address from your Yahoo! Contacts. The contact remains, but the contact's email address is removed. Best regards, Kyle

Suddenly today my contacts no longer pop up when I type in the address line. I checked my contact folder, and they are all there. What can I do to make sure they pop up as I type a name in the address line. Thank you
Deleting old or hidden contacts?
all those deleted mail address are not coming from your mail. rather, they are cached @ your browser. so clean up your browser's cache. if you are using firefox, go to "Tool" menu --> click on "Clear Recent History" --> then a window comes. check in all the checkbox and now press the button "Clear Now". i think, you are out of your problems.
Why doesn't the new yahoo mail insert contacts in the "To" address line/?
I always used to start typing the name in the address line and it came up automatically from my contacts. now I seem to have to go into contacts, search down the list then insert. Is this right or am I doing something wrong? Also, if I want to send the message to more than one person, as I search for that address and tick it, the original one disappears!

I've frequently used the former approach myself, though not specific to when I didn't know the gender.
