Where can I buy a petticoat in San Francisco?

I need a petticoat that can be bought at a store in San Francisco at a reasonable price and at a location that can be reached by bus. Just a simple petticoat that doesn't have to be too expensive since I'm only wearing it for the cherry blossom festival which is only four days.

Wondering what the young woman in the 1870's wore for underwear?

teen girls wore the same as there mothers for undergarments. they wore garters, corsets, shimmies, pantaloons or bloomers, petticoats. most girls by the time they were 16 were married. some even younger than that, so by early teens late tweens you wore the same thing as your mother and the other ladies.

Why don't we Americans dress up anymore?

This is a real thing. Those saying that photos of earlier days are cherrypicked elite nonrepresentations of the unwashed masses are, I think, very wrong. Look at random photos of any city's downtown before the 1970s, at the people standing on street corners waiting for the bus. You did not go downtown without dressing. The change is real. And yes, rebel chic was the driving force, thanks to beatniks and rockers. As a rocker myself, I love what they gave us. If they also took something away from us, I don't think it was their intention.Because something else came with their art and their coolness, an unintended side effect. This was an altogether human insecurity about fitting in magnified by a greater media presence -- the opposite of what beatniks and rockers wanted for us. The result was a massive psychological angle to this I have yet to see any writer touch upon.I'm convinced many people, maybe the majority, privately long to dress up. Somebody's buying all those beautiful clothes in the department stores. But they glow quietly and forlornly in the closet.Because today there is no worse faux pas than taking something too seriously. And that's precisely what dress-up signals, taking something seriously. Few of us agonize much anymore about showing up at an event underdressed, because that would only seem uncaring and nonchalant – in other words, cool. You can't go wrong being underdressed. Far, far worse is to show up overdressed. For that might signal that, god forbid, the event matters to you, more than it does to others. And people might think that means your life is more lame than theirs.I'm someone who unashamedly cares deeply about a lot of things. I love beauty, and to me, humans are part of the landscape as much as the mountains, sea, trees, flowers, architecture and art. When I'm amidst beautifully designed buildings downtown, visiting a public garden, or traveling to a historical site, I'm f*ing littering if I turn up in a sports T-shirt and white sneakers. No, this is not about money or comfort -- we can just as easily wear affordable, comfortable clothes that don't detract from the beauty of the world around us; the thrift stores are filled with them.So I say, pull those lovely things out of the closet and proudly let the world know you care.
