Where Does The Saying Nappy Hair Come From

Your Hair is NAPPY!?

Well I don't take offense. When it grows out, yes it gets thick, but not to the point where it drives me up a wall. I did go about a year without doing a relaxer, but my hair is funny. It doesn't get nappy, nappy. Just tangled when I wash it. My dad has gorgeous hair when he lets it grow and when mine grows out, its doesn't look knotty, just wavy, but I do relaxer my hair depending how I like to where it. I think natural styles are pretty if you take care of your hair. We are all beautiful as black woman, whether our hair is coarse or extra fine. One think I can admit. My hair isn't thick when it grows out at all. So I wish it was a little thicker or nappier at times. And for the first guy that responded negatively about black women,You can keep your personal opinions about black women to your self. because when it comes down to it, black women have been known to be the most smartest creatures in this world. We can take alot and give alot at the same time, and still manage to maintain. We are known to be strong. And we look t people like you and laugh, because what you say doesnt even matter. Look at Condeleeza Rice and Oprah Winfrey. Successful and black. So you saying what you did was stupid. I laugh at people like you because you sound ignorant. And for Bronson, black women dont have to try hard to be beautiful. Who do you hear about going to get nose jobs, boob jobs, *** lift, tummy tuck, face lift, and other mess? WHITE WOMEN. They are beautiful, white women, but they are no better. We dont have to go through that extreme. See we have natural beauty and we age so gracefully. My mother is 48 and she looks like she is about 28, my grandmother is the same way. And they dont have to get injections for this, and surgery for that. Its all natural. People can put black women down, but we have made a name for ourselves. And I am very proud to be a black woman. I have everything that most people and more, but most of all, I am happy

My black ladies with nappy hair, helppp?

So..I feel very self conscious about my hair...it is longer than most black woman in my family and just touches my shoulders, but I usually have to part it from showing in the back because it is dented and there isn't enough hair to look good..My hair sheds like crazy and it keeps falling out..I am trying to learn different hair styles instead of keeping it down and feel uncomfortable because it looks bad in the back..and keeping it in a bun or clip.

Know any fun hairstyles I could try? Websites with instructions perhaps???

Is nappy hair "extremely curly hair" or is nappy hair "hair that is not taken good care of"?

I always thought it was hair not taken good care of and that it was a racist term used by whites back during slavery to describe African American hair. So many people(blacks included) think that nappy and black hair are the same or that nappy hair is curly hair. Im pretty sure thats not right. Nappy hair is messy, unkept hair. I'm also tired of people(ALOT of blacks included) saying that people with curly, natural hair need a perm. I dont have a perm and never had one because I am willing to accept my own traits. I dont want to permanately straighten my hair with toxic chemicals that think your hair out just to look like a white girl or just to "fit in" and look exactly like everyone else(im 15 btw). I am who I am and some people need to realize that. We all know that the only reason you black girls have perms is because society is telling you that natural curly hair is not attractive. Some of you say its only because you think that it is easier to manage. You just dont know how to deal with natural hair, its actually not that hard. Deep down you know you were pressured. But hey, if a black woman wants straight hair, its not a problem with me, just stop looking down on your own natural curly hair as if god makes mistakes please.

(If you are black and dont have naturally curly hair, I'm obviously not talking to or about you because you hopefully dont look down on curly hair)

Are Americans the only people who say diapers instead of nappy?

I love this site! I am home sick today from work and WICKED BORED!!!I never heard of nappy til this site. I use the term diaper and I live in Mass. I always thought of nappy as hair or when your talking to a kid and telling them that its nap time! Cute question!

Do you think the word nappy is a racist term?

I glad you asked because a few people are not aware of the etymology of the word nappy. Yes it is racist, and it is saying African slaves' hair is like beaver fur.

The reason why so many of us are using the word, because like many words in America. We have a tendency to add different definition of that word.
