What is a plant which is not an autotroph?

There are many obligate parasites among the plants. One which I’ve had problems with is called dodder (the genus is Cuscuta.) The one I’ve had problems with is an orange vine. Picking it off seems to be enough to control it on garden plants. I’ve seen it growing in the park near here (Grass Valley, CA.) In the absence of control in the park it covers the other plants making for an odd orange field.Larry

Which of the following is an autotroph, a green plant or a man?

If you want, I can show you how to find answers to questions like that with a simple Google search.

Is fungi an autotroph?

All fungi are heterotrophic feeders. Specifically, they are categorized as chemoheterotrophs (also called organotrophs). Fungi do not have chlorophyll to make food using photosynthesis like plants nor can they make food solely from the simple molecules around them like autotrophic organisms do. As heterotrophs, fungi need the complex organic materials found in the soil to make their food and to provide the energy needed to make it.

What is autotroph?

To understand the difference between an autotrophic and a heterotrophic organism you must first know the difference between organic and inorganic matter. In general, organic matter is composed from molecules that contain Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen and Oxygen atoms. Such molecules include proteins (meat), lipids (fat), and other organic molecules such as vitamins, chlorophyll (plant green pigment) etc. In short, organic matter exists thanks to living organisms that produce it.An autotrophic organism, simply put, is one that synthesizes its own food (organic matter). For example, us humans are heterotrophic because we relay on other organisms to get organic matter and grow. Plants on the other hand are considered autotrophic because they do not need other organisms to feed on, they can produce their own organic matter by themselves!
