Which spelling looks better for the name يوسف: Yousef, Yousif, Yousuf or Yusuf?

The last is unquestionably the best (and most traditional one), the first u being pronounced like the u in "rude," while the second is pronounced like the u in "put." A macron (horizontal bar) over the first would be ideal. If you were to choose one of the others, you would be making it easier for the average English-speaker with no knowledge of how best to pronounce foreign names (and not only transliterated ones from languages that do not use the Roman alphabet); however, you would be catering to the absurdities of English orthography. Moreover, Spanish and Italian names can be mangled when pronounced by English speakers, and so why not go with the most scholarly transliteration of the Arabic name and politely correct those who mispronounce it? If they are offended, then they are jerks. It is not as if the name contains a difficult letter to pronounce, such as ghayn.Of course, I forgot that, since you wrote the name "Joseph" in Arabic, you would know how to pronounce it. Silly me!

Which spelling is better for a boys middle name?

Depending I guess on how it's pronounced. If it's Am-are-ee than I like the spelling Amari. But if it's pronounced like Am-er-eye, like rhyming with Samurai, I think it would be nice if you just took away the "s" to reduce confusion of how it would be pronounced. Like Amurai. Good luck! Jovaun's quite cute.

Which spelling of Clara/Klara do you think looks better?

I saw this question a few days ago, but didn't have a chance to answer. I was hoping it would still be open.

I've debated this question a lot, since Clara is my #1 girls' name, and I've decided to go with the C spelling. Here's why:

-- Clara is the spelling most familiar to English speakers, so its likely to cause the least amount of trouble. If you're planning to pronounce the name the English way (KLAIR-uh), then it makes sense to pick the most standard English spelling. However, if you're planning to pronounce the name the German way (KLAHR-uh), then I think Klara would be a more intuitive choice.

-- K respellings are very trendy. Klara (unless you're using it for the German pronunciation) looks like a modern respelling. Clara, however, retains the name's timeless classic vibe.

-- To English speakers at least, Clara has more namesakes. There's Clara Barton (founder of the American Red Cross), Clara Bow (a famous 1920's flapper and silent film actress), Clara Schumann (a 19th century composer), Clara Stahlbaum (the main character in the "Nutcracker" ballet), and Clara Pocket (a sweet girl in "Great Expectations" who secretly marries one of Pip's best friends). All Klara makes me think of is the invalid girl from "Heidi."

What's wrong with the spelling of my baby's name?

i would go with Dylan, that is a more traditional spelling (as in the writer Dylan Thomas), it is a pretty popular name here in Australia and most spell it Dylan. i guess people spell it Dillon as it is more how it sounds. i agree Dillon is more like a last name, like Matt Dillon.... good luck anyway!
