Who Do You Consider The First Doom Metal Band

What came first?? Doom metal or thrash metal?

wrong category but trash came before doom metal

even though the awnser is not that clear cut
doom metal is inspired by the songs from black sabbath in the 70's
but it was not defined as a genre until the mid 80's

trash came to the front in the early 80's and it spawned death and groove metal and in part black metal

Who do you consider to be the best three person band of all time?

I unhesitatingly declare The Jam to be the greatest trio of all time!First of all I love them and they had a huge influence on me as a musician and performer. They gave as intense a performance as you could ever witness, Paul Weller spitting out political and social commentary while somehow managing to carry an inventive tune, Bruce Foxton leaping about while not missing a note of his busy melodic driving bass lines, and drummer Rick Buckler holding everything down and propulsing it forward at the same time (“propulsing” is not a word but should be). They were Mod revivalists, filtering classic R&B, Motown, and the classic 60’s bands The Who, Kinks, Small Faces, and Beatles through a 70’s punk rock attitude. They were badass, if a bit overly serious at times. Pete Townshend lamented their lack of a musical sense of humor, but I can forgive that considering their stunning songwriting and performing:Ah the early years. And:They released 18 consecutive top 40 singles in the UK - 18!!!!Including several number 1’s:So that’s my answer.Honorable mentions:Husker DuMinutemenNirvana

Was Black Sabbath the first Heavy Metal band?

some human beings do not comprehend Sabbath as metallic for an same reason human beings do not comprehend Led Zeppelin and Deep red as metallic anymore, yet I actual imagine they are. Their earlier fabric became form of sluggish, bluesy heavy metallic (unique heavy metallic as I call it). be counted of reality, Black Sabbath initial occupation plans were to be only a heavy blues-rock band. =P yet no, they are metallic very well. they received't were as heavy as later metallic bands like Judas Priest, Scorpions and Motörhead yet only because you're initially area of something (consequently, heavy metallic) and that something turns into completely different than what it became, that would not propose you quit being area of it. some human beings evaluate them "doom metallic" yet I strongly disagree with that. they did not play doom metallic, again, they performed sluggish and bluesy heavy metallic. Sabbath's early fabric is the major foundation for doom metallic yet having a capacity on a form of song would not make you area of it. Pentagram became the first doom metallic band.

Was 'Helter Skelter' the first heavy-metal song ever?

No. In fact, I’d say Helter Skelter is more Punk than Metal. There are some good answers here, and I think as with anything else in art/food/music, it’s going to be hard to pinpoint what exactly is the first. Add to that the important task of deciding what is Metal vs Hard Rock. I’d put Sabbath in the Metal category and Zeppelin in the Hard Rock category, while both bands have songs that could qualify for vice versa, and even whole other styles (like Zep’s decidedly folk and blues stuff). Definitely a fools errand to try and determine the real first metal song, though kind of fun as well. Super props to the guy who posted Der Erlkonig, though I think you could even go as far back as Mozart, maybe even Bach, maybe Vivaldi and most definitely there is some metal to be had in early church music. And I’ll bet there are some holdovers from the minstrel days as well. But I think we can all agree that while we can’t define the first metal song, Black Sabbath are the godfathers of metal and we can leave it at that, while still appreciating the godcousins like Steppenwolf and The Who, who fit comfortably in the Hard Rock category.

Would you call Black Sabbath doom metal?

They are the first doom metal band. But they also are the first heavy metal band period. It's a tough decision, but I think they at least had a tremendous impact on the doom metal genre even if they aren't doom metal.

Doom Metal is not screaming to whoever said that, it is generally slow, heavy metal. It usually has clean singing.

Can you recommend me some Traditional Doom Metal albums?

Ok I will stick to Trad Doom as much as possible:

Pentagram - Relentless (I personally like this one way better than Day of Reckoning, its insane)

Cathedral - Forest of Equilibrium (Lee Dorrian growls his vocals most of the time so maybe death/doom, but still a classic)

Saint Vitus - Saint Vitus (Burial at Sea is a great song, its a short album so idk about buying it but the songs are solid)

Saint Vitus - Born too Late (a doom metal classic, Wino on vocals)

Electric Wizard - Electric Wizard (gravely underrated, "lighter" than their next albums but the riffs are solid, Devil's Bride is great)

Electric Wizard - Witchcult Today (newest album, retro production, I love it, Dunwich is such a sick song)

I haven't really looked at Pagan Altar, so idk about them sorry. I will give you more later if you would like, but I have to go now!

edit: ok, here are some more possibilities, although most of these are not straight up doom but are doomy:

Sleep - Sleep's Holy Mountain (more stoner than doom, although there is some doom in there, phenomenal album though, one of my favorites to listen to)

Bedemon - Child of Darkness (Bobby and Randy from Pentagram had this side project, more doomy than 1970s/80s Pentagram, though the sound quality is poor)

Spirit Caravan - Last Embrace (again, this isn't really straight up doom, but it is my favorite of Wino's bands, I really dig their stuff, listen to Lost Sun Dance for a slower song)

Goatsnake - Flower of Disease (southern style stoner/doom, check out the title track on youtube, use Sunn amps, has Greg and Stephen from Sunn O))) if that interests you)

There are some great ones mentioned above by others, like Trouble's Psalm 9 and the Obsessed (another Wino band), plus Ahab, although funeral doom, is unbelievable, listen to Old Thunder, its incredible

Isn't "grunge" basically sludge/stoner/doom metal?

Well first off the term "grunge" did not come from a record company. It was first used by music legend Mark Arm (vocalist of Green River & Mudhoney) during an interview to describe they're sound.

Grunge is a sub genre made of alternative rock made up of Hardcore Punk, Heavy Metal & Indie Rock.

Grunge as you probably know originated from Washington while Sludge/stoner/doom came more from New Orleans area.

Sludge was actually influenced by Grunge (so that's why you may hear some similarities) along with doom rock and noise rock.

Sludge is also more heavy than grunge

Also Alice in Chains are exactly like you said more Sludge metal with blues. They were originally labeled as heavy metal but due to the dying interest in metal during the early 90's, they were labeled Grunge by the media and their record company to help promote sales.

Soundgarden before Superunknown were more heavy metal as well, but changed their sound to grunge in 94.

Pearl Jam and Nirvana are however perfect examples of grunge. Along with Mudhoney, Green River and Screaming Trees.

All in all these genre's are similar but they do have some distinct chararistics, so to answer your question... NO, they're not the same just similar.

What are your favorite ten glam/hair metal bands?

Here are my ten favorite Hair Metal bands:Motley CrueDef LeppardGun ’N’ RosesSkid RowKixBon JoviL.A. Who listens to metal and what genres do you prefer?

I listen to heavy metal a lot. but the sub-genre that i really love is Heavy Metal. This is where Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, KISS and etc. reside. then some earlier metal gods like Led Zeppelin, who were claimed by many as the band that put heavy in heavy metal. then of course, the first metal song Born To Be Wild by Steppenwolf, this is where you can hear first time in a song the phrase "heavy metal". (I like smoke and lightning, heavy metal thunder, rushing with the wind and the feeling that i'm under...) of course, who could forget the first doom & gloom/heavy/ goth band Black Sabbath? And of course, there's thrash metal and the Almighty Slayer just kicks @ss! too bad, tom is deciding to retire, by the way. hope this answers your question.
