Who Is The Woman Dentist Who Was On A Talk Show About Teeth And Dental Care

Dental- If my dentist says I have 8mm size pockets....?

Here's how it goes there chief.

1-3mm pockets without bleeding is healthy tissue and bone.
4-5mm pockets with some bleeding present is the start of periodontal disease.
6mm and above with bleeding puts one in the moderate to severe periodontal category.

Is he sh*&%ing you for $$$$$- no!!!!!
Is he educating you on what perio disease is and offering you a more than likely non-surgical treatment to help get this under control - yes!!!!

If losing your teeth scares you, then you should be scared. If having a healthy mouth with teeth that will last you a lifetime (as long as you maintain them) is something you want, then heed the advice and get the proper treatment.

You should thank your dentist for taking the time to measure your periodontal health as many offices overlook this very valuable treatment.

Best of luck!!!

Do you go to dentist or oral surgeon to remove your wisdom teeth?

I am a dentist.

An oral surgeon (properly known as an "oral and maxillofacial surgeon") undergoes 4 to 6 years of training beyond dental school. Those who spend 6 years typically spend 2 of those 6 years earning an "M.D." degree, and thus hold the titles of "D.D.S., M.D." or "D.M.D., M.D."

Of those 4 to 6 years, oral surgeons get a great deal of experience performing surgery both inside and outside of the mouth. Third molar (i.e. wisdom tooth) extractions are but a small component of an oral surgeon's training. Additionally, oral surgeons spend a minimum of 4 months learning anesthesia, and thus are permitted to perform sedations. General dentists can train to perform sedations, however, most do not.

Extraction of third molars does not require an oral surgery residency, but it does require proper training. As a general dentist, I extract the vast majority of third molars because I have proper training and experience doing them. I only refer patients to oral surgeons when they specifically request sedation, or if the case is "high risk" for a nerve injury. I do this for liability reasons, not because I think the oral surgeon is much less likely to cause a nerve injury. To be honest, I'd rather have the oral surgeon get sued.

It really depends on the dentist. Most dentists don't have the proper training extracting third molars, and thus refer patients to oral surgeons.

Why are dental hygienists always cute young women?

I am a 27 year old hygienist with beautiful hygiene friends. I have noticed this to be true also. I believe this is because we are detailed and care about appearance.

My son is scared of the dentist...any advice please???

My two sons are 15 months apart, my 4 year old has been to the dentist frequently but FREAKS out when we get back in the room. He wont sit in the chair and screams if I sit in the chair & hold him on my lap. I can get him calmed down enough to let the dentist look at his teeth but he wont cooperate to let them clean his teeth. He hasn't had a bad experience with the dentist but used to freak out about going to the doctor (probably thought he was getting shots). My 3 year old is due to have his first check-up soon and I am terrified he will act the same because he hates going to the doctor. The let me brush their teeth twice daily so I think it may be a trust issue?? I dont know. Is there any good advice anyone can give me on how to make the dentist visits easier on everyone? Thanks!

25yr old and never been to a dentist.?

Yellow teeth? That's not so bad. Neither is not having been to the dentist yet in your life.

It's good that you are finally taking care of yourself dental-wise. You may need more than one session with the dental hygienist, depending upon how bad the tartar is.

As for the dentist, if he's any good at all, he will give you the best possible care in order to save your teeth. You might have some cavities to have filled, but that's much easier now than it used to be.

The dentist can offer to whiten your teeth for you with an in-office whitening system (called Zoom). Your teeth may be darker due to antibiotics you took as a kid (tetracycline and erythromycin are the most common offenders; as is too much fluoride). This could affect how much whitening is actually possible. In that case, your dentist may recommend veneers. For any cosmetic dentistry like this, you should probably see an esthetic or cosmetic dentist, as this kind of work is their specialty.

For regular dental care, the best brush (recommended by my dental hygienist and dentist) is the electric Oral-B. Toothpastes have pretty much the same formulations - Crest and Colgate are the most common. There are several variations on the same theme - tartar control, whitening, etc etc., but these are more of a selling point. The other thing you need to concentrate on is flossing on a regular basis - to get the plaque and food out of the spaces between your teeth where the toothbrush can't reach.
