the past few seasons haven't been very good, so maybe they're experimenting with darker plots to see if they can win people over that way. i'm not really sure if this trend will continue but, like you, i haven't been a fan of these new episodes. i watch family guy for the humor, which (in my opinion) has been lacking for several seasons but especially in the newest episodes.

Do Anybody Want Brian Griffin Back On Family Guy?
I was Literally crying because they killed off Brian on Family Guy. Vinny the new dog they have is nothing compared to Brian.. I want them to bring (Brian Griffin) back on Family Guy, without Brian it will never be the same. Am a big fan of Family Guy, but after Brian died I never want to watch Family Guy. PLEASE BRING BACK (BRIAN GRIFFIN) FROM DEATH.
