Gums bleeding, new retainer?

Hi! I've been in dentistry for over 20 years, and this is common. The bleeding should be more pinky than red. Try this. Floss and brush. Then rinse with warm salty water for 1-2 minutes. Do this 3 times a day for 1 week and the last at night. I think this will stop after that. Your gums are just tender and need some extra care. Once the salt water rinses heal the gums your should be fine. In the future, if this happens, repeat the rinses and you should see it resolve in 1-2 days. If you have any other questions, please ask. Gums Bleeding After Braces Removed???

When the braces are on, it makes it more difficult to clean the teeth and gums thoroughly. Flossing is essential at anytime, but more so when you have braces. If you didn't floss regularly during the time you had braces, your gums could have become irritated, and inflammed, and they will bleed. I suggest having a cleaning done at your general dentist's office... This will help get out any irritants that can cause the gums to be sore. After the cleaning, brush as you normally would, and don't forget to floss. (once a day). In the beginning, you will probably notice some bleeding, but that should subside in a week or so as the gums heal and 'toughen up'. You can also try rinsing out with some warm salt water and/or plain old Listerine. The salt water will help with soreness and promote healing, and the Listerine will help kill any bacteria in the mouth.
Good luck, and know that this is a reversible problem as long as it's addressed soon.

Why does my gums bleed when I floss?

Your gums are bleeding because you have all kinds of debris and bacteria in the spaces between your teeth and gums. They're sore, even if you can't see or feel it.

Keep flossing and don't worry, the bleeding will go away in a few days or a week or two. But floss every day, and be thorough. If a bunch of gunk comes out when you floss between two teeth, run the floss through again until no more gunk comes out.

You've been brushing, but brushing only cleans the tooth surface. Meanwhile, bacteria have been forming little pockets in your gums.

Flossing shouldn't hurt, by the way. Work the floss in gently. If the gums hurt, that will clear up as they heal. But if the teeth hurt, then you have cavities and need to see the dentist.

You should brush and floss after your last meal or snack of the day, before you go to sleep. Don't wait until morning, because bacteria can multiply astronomically in just hours.

However, you should also brush and floss after breakfast, before going to work or school for the day.
