Why Did Thrash Metal And Death Metal Ruin Rock Music

Why do people like "death metal" music, even though it sounds so harsh?

There is stuff far more harsh in the world of music. Especially to westerners who are mostly bombarded with Commercial music. I started to listen to Slipknot in 6th grade and since then I grew heavier and heavier listening to Meshuggah by 10th grade and Necrophagist by 11th grade. Now I listen to stuff like Death Grips, Khanate, and Yaporigami Which I think is the next level. But now, I can listen to Death Metal albums when going to sleep. Its almost as therapeutic as study music people listen to when doing their homework. I think music that isn't normal in society like 8 note scales and Pentatonic scales will make people turn away or feel uncomfortable. Its an acquired taste and I feel people should accept it. Usually when people complain about it I hear this1). There is no order to it. Well this is because Death Metal sometimes doesn't follow ABA, ABAA, or ABC song song structure. Sometimes there is no Bridge and no Chorus. Or sometimes the Chorus is the outro and the song is full of Verses and Prechorus. Its a lovely change of pace. They also don’t use the Pentatonic scale like most commercial music does using the same chord progressions.2). I hate the vocals. This, I can sometimes understand, but there is plenty of instrumental Death Metal for this to not be a problem. People in the Death Metal community will not like one vocalists but love another, so its mostly preference. I also listen to music from all over the world and if I don’t speak the language, I see the lyrics as another instrument complementing the music. I don’t need to hear the lyrics to feel the music.3).Its too harsh or the Lyrics are too violent. Another reason I like Death Metal is because they talk about the extremes of human nature and its completely different from what we normally hear. Commercial music is mostly about Drugs, Sex, or Relationships. Well, with Death metal you won’t get that very often. And if you do, its the Biological effects of Drugs or Sexual mutilation and Fetishes. Which is fine with me because you shouldn't take the lyrics seriously anyways. Some Death Metal bands I like have awesome lyrics like Despised Icon. Also, If you can’t understand them then why does the lyrics matter haha. Its all acquired taste.

List some reasons why metal music is better than pop music?

Heavy metal isn't just screaming and things like that, there's different genres and actually takes talent to play. Whereas a pop or rap beat can be made on a computer in a couple hours, learning to play instruments and growl without hurting your voice takes years and years of practice.
I think the meaning in lots of metal songs is better and more deep than other mainstream rap and pop. Whereas you've got popular rappers selling out to make money, you see lots of metal artists only being supported by a strong network of fans.

Metal can recreate Classical masterpieces, whereas rap, pop, and electronic music just can't do it. Metal is pretty much the classical music of today, where some of the most talented musicians can be found. I saw online somebody state that metal will be the music that people will study hundreds of years from now, much like we do with classical music.

The themes and lyrics can be funny yet incredibly deep and insightful, covering topics of War, Death, Politics, Religion, Suicide, and everything else imaginable. The genres are countless from mainstream pop metal to incredibly brutal underground metal. Also it's incredibly atmospheric, to the point that some genres like Black metal can have you ready to go to war, while other genres like Funeral Doom can make you feel like you're the only person on earth. It's a mindset and a lifestyle, whereas if I see another metal head, I know I could walk up to them and begin talking about bands and we would instantly click. Where we don't need to all have long hair and wear spikes, but just the knowledge of heavy metal unites us. Wow that was deep, but yeah that's my opinion as a metalhead.

Did grunge music kill 80's rock and metal?

So I'm not a fan of Nirvana (especially after learning that they had to "re-learn" their instruments to perform live one time), but a few songs from bands like Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam are alright. Are bands similar to these responsible for the downfall of the 80's? I could honestly live without modern music (from the early 90's onward), but the 80's and before that is just gold. Am I right, or is there more to it than this? I mean, it seems that "pop" music has taken over and mainstream equals crap nowadays. Do I have grunge to thank for this?

Can metal bands such as black metal, death metal, thrash metal or whatever be considered quality music? Are there Metal bands that have truly sophisticated works that should be taken more seriously than most people give them credit for?

Definitely. What many people don't realize is that music is a lot like food: we won't appreciate tastes unless we train our taste buds (well… it's actually our brain we are training). It's like eating spicy Indian food for the first time: the spiciness is overwhelming and we don't taste anything else. Only after we get used to hot food, do we find the many wonderful layers of flavors. It's the same with music. Without “training” our brains, much of any genre would be interpreted by our brains as noise. For example: Before the Renaissance, polyphonic music was rare and dissonant tones were uncommon. People around 1200 would have a hard time listening to any type of modern music. Now this doesn't mean you have to like it. For example: I listen to virtually all music, from Tibetan throat singing to death metal and from close harmony to techno, but to this day I hate most country and western and modern r&b and hiphop.Back to metal: many metal bands have incredible competent musicians. Guitarist like Dave Mustain, Buckethead, John 5 or Dimebag Darrel are masters of their instruments as are drummers like Gene Hoglan, Martin Lopez or Mike Mangini and bass players like Steve Harris, John Myung and Mike Flores. But metal is more then just brilliant musicians. While some bands just want(ed) to make a louder, more dangerous version of rock, like Kiss or Alice Cooper, others experimented and created incredible complicated pieces of work.Bands like Opeth, Tool, Dream Theater, Theory in practice, Emperor or suffocation all make music that is sophisticated and complex. So here's a link to a YouTube of a Canadian band called unexpect. As the song slowly develops before it explodes, it might gives an idea how complex metal can get.

Why is heavy metal so satanic?

Heavy metal is NOT Satanic. Most people misunderstood that. Because most people don’t know what metal is.Let me give you some examples.Metal has sub-genres:For most people metal is just extreme metal. Loud music. Screaming etc. They don’t know about metal. Yes, there are satanism in metal. But, only black metal is satanic. Other genres like thrash, death metal have occasional satanism. So, there are lots of metal genres. Heavy Metal aka Traditional metal isn’t satanic.Metal is based on music genres like blues, rock, jazz, classical music. Not on satanism.Okay, check these,,So, what do you listen in these songs. Do you listen any satanism? Any satanic lyrics? Any screaming? So, Referring metal as satanic is like calling classical music satanic.Cause a lot of metal artists like Deep Purple, Rainbow and most neoclassical metal artists were inspired from classical music and they use them in their songs. So, not every genre is satanic. Like I said only genres like death metal, black metal, thrash metal (mostly black metal) have satanic lyrics. But these genres were inspired from Punk rock with mix of metal. My question is Are Guitar Riffs, solos, shredding satanic? What about instrumental metal songs? So, some people should know more about metal. Metal isn’t just extreme metal. There are folk, symphonic, traditional heavy metal, speed metal, progressive metal, neoclassical metal etc.2. Some metal artists sang about Christianity :Ian Gillan, one of the founders of metal voice used to sing christian lyrics. There are christian metal.Stryper for exampleThere is Unblack metal. So, its not only for satanic people who like black metal.3. Some people think heavy music is an act of satanism:OK. Aggressive riffs doesn’t mean its about satanism. It may be about anger, hatred, protest etc. Punk rock has also aggressive rock. But most people don’t say its satanic. Green Day has loud music. But people don’t say they are satanic. Screaming doesn’t mean its satanic. Screaming means the anger. Which has become more famous in metal. Some metal singers only scream because they like the sound. Conclusion: So, its wrong idea that metal is satanic. Not all metal genres are satanic. If people had listened more metal songs and genres and gave it a chance so they wouldn’t say these kinds of things.I hope it helps. :)

Why do some people criticise metal music?

Most of us know 'how' people criticize metal - the reasons stated. But this question  seeks the classic - 'why'! While  there is a possibility that Whys = Hows, it is not often that people strip naked off the apparel of opinions and reveal the prejudices tattooed to their skin - often even to themselves? Short Answer:  Self serving ignorance and delusive justifications to something they just don't get.Long Answer:  Most people who criticize metal are in a state of mind where they just don't like metal music. . It's literally too chaotic for them to enjoy or make sonical sense.     Most criticism is often a delusive justification to bury that notion. Be it lyrical themes like violence, rebellion, drugs or sex an what not. Metal is Neither exclusive to such taboo themes, nor are these themes exclusive to metal music. Even the most extreme case of National Socialist Black Metal is part of a more wider pro-Nazi phenomenon known as White power music. Positive messages are no longer unicorns in metal music. Complexity is not predominant in metal but there is no lack of -  if you know to use Google that is. So any such criticism is limited to the listener's awareness of what's out there. Ignorance, for such people can be self serving. Quoting myself from 'just now' :The reason these people do not attempt (get off their butt) to verify if such criticism truly qualifies exclusive to and inclusive of most metal music is  - they cannot sonically interpret or enjoy the hard hitting rhythms and harsh distorted guitars/vocals accompanying it.   Actually this is understandable, this is human. But then - harshness, loudness, heaviness, noisiness, whatever - is not criticism. Duh .. this is Heavy Metal!! Until the day the Sun is criticized for being so bright - thank you, come again!
