Why Did You Get A Body Piercing

Why do people get piercings?

Some people do it to fit in. But I find that most pierced people, like the ones that are really into it, are very opposite. Some people just like the way it looks. Some people like the pain. It's really different for everyone. For me, it's like using my body as a picket sign. (I am also tattooed) My tattoos and piercings are an anti-society sort of thing for me. Not because I think I'm just SO original or something. I'm not stupid enough to believe that. But more because I don't want to buy into the socially accepted image that I'm supposed to have as a young woman. Jen McB said that she often forgets about her tats and piercings, and I'm the same way. It's definitely not about fitting in. I get stared at like that too, and widely discriminated against. I guess if there's any psychological reason for me, it would be to study the behaviors of others. It's very interesting to see how others will react to my appearance. Or to see how I'm judged for looking a certain way. It really allows me to see how people are. How we behave as humans. It also works for me as an idiot filter. Close-minded superficial people take on look at me and instantly feel the need to make a face and whisper negative comments under thier breath. I automatically know that I wouldn't want anything to do with them anyways. They would treat me the same way if I had a different skin color too, so why bother giving them my time? On the flipside, the open-minded, kinder people will approach me and get to know me, and not even pay any mind to my apperance, and I love that. I want to know more people like that! I figure I've only got one body, so I'm going to do with it as I please while it lasts. It's very freeing.

Modern body piercing (since '60s)?

Don't believe everything you read on wikipedia.

Women have worn pierced earrings for centuries, and not just in tribal cultures. Pierced ears go back to biblical times.

Body piercing goes back further than just the 60's, although Fakir Musafar (someone you should research for your paper) is pretty much who brought body piercing into modern times. The 80's isn't what started the all the "crazy facial piercings" either, it just wasn't something that was a trend before then (it's sad that it has become a fashion trend).
