Why Do Dog Food Companies Add Vitamin K On Dry Foods

Is Pedigree dog food good or bad for your dog?

If a dog foodstays inside the dogdoes not cause the dog to eat grass all the timedoes not cause elevated blood valuesis affordableis climate-friendlydoes not contain obscure ingredients like fantasy fish names or “algae”does not contain superfoods that cause botanists to have laughing fitsTHEN IT IS GREAT DOG FOOD!If Pedigree works fine for your dog, so be it. (Dear fellow quora users, a dog food does not have to contain 80 percent Wagyu beef….)Hills and Royal Canine are best if your dog needs a veterinary diet. (My 16-year-old labrador bitch would already be dead without strict “low fat”- diet. Rest of that dog is quite healthy but we could use a new pancreas… The 10-year-old has lymphocytic IBD and has to be fed a vegetarian diet. He gets severe diarrhoea from any kind of meat but is fine with his Hills/RC diet.)Please do not feed large amounts of meat. Dogs aren´t wolves and do not need this. Dogs ARE meant to be fed with corn, that is what most of them got the last 2000 years. A lot of meat does them more harm than good. (With the exception of working Greenlandic sled dogs, but I guess you do not live in Greenland and your dog isn´t an extremely wolf-like breed living outdoors in arctic winter.)Also, we do not want the human species to die out within the next 200 years due to extreme global warming, so any dog food with lots of meat is out of question. (Sorry, no Japanese beef for Fifi.)I also want to inform you that the non-scientific term “algae” applies to about 10.000 aquatic, autotrophic, pro- or eukaryotic organisms that are as closely related as myself and Ziggy The Cute Spider. If you feed your dog “algae”, you do not know what you feed (Photoautotrophic bacteria? Rhodophycea? Plants?), where it comes from (Fukushima?) and how it was harvested. (But of course we can always declare that dolphin, turtle, sea lion or drowned bird as “OceanWolfWilderness Premium Dog Food with tuna and algae” and print a wolf on the can. After all, shit happens.)I am certain your dog can do without chia seeds, sunflower tubers, powdered Aloe vera-leaves, Ginkgo fruits and … such. I haven´t yet seen a European wolf hunt for chia seeds and doubt very much our ancestors wanted Captain Cook to find new superfoods for dogs in Tahiti. (“SouthernSeaWolf with wild boar and bread fruits, wheat-free”… How does that sound? I think I might start to produce FROZEN RAW PREMIUM DOG FOOD. Some fellow quora users will pay me a fortune…)

Is Beniful a good dog food?

Animal Fat > Animal fat is a "generic" fat source that is most often made up of rendered animal fat, rancid restaurant grease or other oils that are deemed inedible for humans.

Chicken By-products: > These are ground parts from poultry carcasses such as feet, heads, feathers, intestines, necks and undeveloped eggs and can included any rendered material.

Corn Products: Corn products including corn meal, gluten and grits are cheap, allergy causing fillers and are very difficult for animals to digest.

Animal Digest: This is the dry by-product of rendered meat. During rendering, all usable animal parts (including fetal tissues and glandular wastes) are heated in vats and the liquid is separated from the dry meal. This meal is covered with charcoal and labeled "unfit for human consumption" before processing it into pet food. Digest can also include intestines, as well as the contents of those intestines, such as stool, bile, parasites and chemicals.

What are the best dog food nutrients?

I buy organic dog food from a company that’s been around for a long time. For many years they were just a small company that was dedicated to making healthy dog food. I used to see there dog food on a shelf in health food stores as far back as the 60s. I saw they had begun to make dog food from organic ingredients back in the 90s. Now they are selling lt at a reasonable price. when I started feeding this to my dog, her fur got shiny, her muscles became more defined and she looked so good that when I took her for I walk people commented on how beautiful she was. She was 1yr old when I got her, nothing but skin and bones, she had fleas and tape worms. She is 8yrs old now, has never been sick and is a beautiful dog. Dogs need mostly protein, but they need vitamins, minerals, essential fats like we do. And they can suffer from chemical food additives just like we do. The brand I buy is called Organix by Castor & Pollux. I also buy their one called Pristine…it’s made from things like free range meats, salmon, lamb…etc. blended with organic dog friendly fruits and vegetables. My dog loves this food and thrives on it. I also buy their canned food and I feed my dog food I eat, mostly meats. But when I make stirfry, I give rice and meat from the stirfry. So she gets fresh food, dry food and canned food. I also give her plain yogurt and a little bit of cows milk when she wants it. She gets occasional Doritos, cheezits and bunny grahams, each family members favorite snack food! I try not to give her things with sugar or white flour though, to protect her teeth.

Your opinion on Nutro dog food?

Nutro is one of the worst dog foods. They use menadione, a synthetic form of Vitamin K in almost all of their products, Max, Nutro Natural and Ultra. Menadione has been banned for human consumption by the FDA. They use corn gluten in many of their foods, INCLUDING three of the Nutro Ultra formulas, all the while advertising "no ground yellow corn" as if it makes any difference whether the corn is ground or what color it is. Corn gluten is the protein part of the corn, a by-product of the cornstarch industry, used by most of the low quality foods (Pedigree, Beneful, Alpo, Black Gold, Goodlife, Friskies, Science Diet, Loyall, Pet Promise, Pro Plan, Purina Dog Chow, Purina One, Red Flannel, Royal Canin and WholeMeals) to boost the protein percentage in the guaranteed analysis with cheap, plant protein, which has a very low bioavailability rating. They use wheat in many of their formulas and soy in almost all of them. They use beet pulp as the fiber which is also the fiber of choice of almost all of the lower quality foods. They "split" ingredients which is another sure indicator of a low quality food. They use the generic "poultry fat" in most of their formulas, another indication of a low quality food. They use very few chelated minerals which the better dog foods use. They boast "high levels of Omega 6 and Omega 3 fatty acids," but there is very little of the more expensive Omega 3 and the ratios are very bad (17.5 to 1 and 20 to 1 in most of them). Only the Ultra contains any fruits and vegetables. The only thing "premium about this food is the price and there are many much better foods for the same price or less: Blue Buffalo, Wellness, Castor & Pollux, Merrick, Taste of the Wild, Canidae and Solid Gold. If money is a problem, PetSmart's brand, Authority is better than Nutro at half the price.

Looking for a better dog food?

We've been feeding our dogs Rachael Ray's Nutrish, and after doing some research it turns out that it's not a very good food. Can anyone suggest a healthy food that the dogs will actually eat?
