Why Do I Randomly Feel Like I Have To Take Deep Breaths

Why do I keep taking random deep breaths?

It usually happens at night in my bed, or while I'm watching a movie, or maybe even more often but I'm not paying attention...anyway...suddenly, without warning my body will literally force in a deep breath. Its quick, painless and I feel better after. Its not till that deep breath that I realize I might have actually paused normal breathing temporarily without being aware, and the deep breath is my bodies involuntary response to the lack of oxygen.

When it happens, it feels like in a fraction of a second my chest opens up and my lungs pull in air so fast that I don't have time to determine if it will enter through my mouth or nose. As a result, its almost like a tiny snort accompanies the intake. The breath itself is loud and it truly does sounds like I'm starved for air. Like I had just been underwater for too long and surfaced.

It doesn't feel like asthma. Although I've never had it, I am aware that it is a constriction. Its the opposite for me. The deep breaths isn't constricted at all. I'm embarrassed by the sound it makes. I'm waiting for my mom to hear it and then send me to 100 doctors to get it checked out...maybe I should. Thoughts? What is this and why am I doing it?

Why do I feel like I can't breathe?

Turn to Christ, pray, and read the Bible

Why do I randomly get scared?

Ah, honey, I know the feeling. Those are panic attacks. They started with me when i was about your age.

But it's really good that taking a deep breath works. wish that did for me. :)

You'll probably be fine for now, but if it ever gets the the point that you can't control it or it's majorly affecting your life, you need to tell someone. A lot of people make jokes about anxiety and panic attacks, but it's no laughing matter. Tell your parents or an adult you really trust- there are ways to make them go away.

I hope this helps, and I really hope they get better. If it's any consolation, a lot of people experience panic attacks every once in awhile.

Feel like I don't need to breathe...?

For some reason, at random times I feel like I don't need to breathe... like I kind of have to force myself to breathe because I'd know I'd die if I don't breathe... anyone know what's going on?
