Why Do Models Have To Be Skinny And Tall

Why do all models have to be tall and skinny?

Correct me if I'm wrong, and I'm totally against it, but I've heard a desginer say that from the angle that the people are sitting at watching the runway, the clothing looks best when it's a tall and thin person wearing it.

Do all models have to be tall and skinny?

someone told me that i should start modeling and i think that could be a good idea. she said i have striking features (sorry, im really not trying to bragging), but i am not tall or skinny...at ALL. im not even 5'2, and i have HUGE tree-trunk, muscular legs, and a little bit of a stomach. i guess you could say i have a very, VERY athletic build. i have an open call for modeling tomorrow afternoon, and they want to meet me and see if i have what it takes i guess. so obviously i cant be a runway model, they are extremely tall and skinny. but, is it possible for them to look at my face and say, oh, she has really big, bright blue eyes...maybe we could just focus on her face and put her in a make up commercial, or something like that? or will they just completely turn me down because i am kinda..."chunky"? please answer honesltly and use as much knowledge you have for agencies because i dont want to embarrass myself...
thanks!
btw im 14. please no comments about modeling being a bad thing or anything like that

Why are most models tall?

First of all - and this is important. It has nothing to do with aesthetics, attractiveness in photographs, or any of those subjective things. Not at all.So sorry that people think that. The reason is when a designer starts to work on a dress, he has no idea if the dress will sell or not, only that he wants to create it.So a model is brought in as a mannequin for the designer to work with. Most of them are thin and 5′8″ - 5′11″. And all the designers use the same size models (the reason for which will become apparent in a moment). The designer and his/her team then make 2–3 and up to 5 or so dresses to be seen on the runway. The runway is where the buyers see the dresses and decide if they want to order them, and in what quantity. It is important to note that no designer goes out and makes 5000 copies of a dress based on the idea that the buyers will indeed buy them. Not in couture - and couture is what we are discussing.Once the buyers see the dresses (fashion weeks in NYC, Milan, Paris etc) they place the orders and the dress is then made in different sizes and quantities to fit the order. So that means the same dresses have to go all around the world and fit every model on every runway show. The dress you see in Milan is very likely to be the very same dress you see in a Vogue editorial. So the model must fit the dress, not the other way around. Fashion agreed on the taller women because they are more visible on the runway. And all designers use the same parameters so all the models must be able to fit every dress.THAT is the reason they are tall and thin. If they were all sizes, it would make it nearly impossible to ever get the collection shown. It really is not a bias against short models, it is a business decision based on a simple math. Eliminating the variables in model size and height makes it so much easier to bring the work to market.Commercial talent can be of any size and height, but - and it is not fortunate or unfortante, it just is, couture models must be tall and thin.

Why do models have to be tall?

print models don't have to be tall, they just need to suit the campaigns look. however, they tend to cast taller models for runway or couture because designers feel that clothes look better on these type of bodies. If modeling is your passion you height should not stop you. There are still opportunities in beauty and print jobs. and there are petite runway models.

How come models are always tall and skinny?

Because the fashion industry treat their models like coat hangers, they don't want women with curves and big breasts to detract the attention from the oufit itself. They want someone that the clothes can literally hang off. It's wrong.

Why do you have to be skinny to be a model?

The short answer is you don’t always have to be.But if you want to be a runway model (highly unlikely as its a one in a million for the millions of girls who do look the part) you do need to be unusually skinning size -2 is often the norm, thats simply how its done, that is who the dresses and other clothes are designed for. Not for normal people. They thing most people don’t realize is 99% of what is seen in the rags and runways are never intended to sell. They are show pieces like prototype cars, its all about getting attention, not about selling the show piece.Tall skinny girls sell products better than short heavy ones no matter how un-PC that is to say. If the clothes sold better filled in with jelly beans or car mufflers thats what they would hang them on instead of skinny tall models.

Why do runway models have to stay skinny?

There are certainly cultural beauty standards which are at play, but there are also functional reasons for having tall, skinny runway models. This is particularly true in women’s fashion, so this answer is situated within that context.Every season, fashion designers and brands have to design and produce samples of entire collections to display for their runway fashion shows. This can be up to 50–100 unique garments, 2–6 times a year. As most fashion brands continue to present more and more seasons within a year, the time frame allotted to create each collection is becoming hyper-condensed. Many garments must be designed to fit a specific body: body dimensions must be taken into account while designing patterns. For example - what size will the model’s waist be? How long are her legs? Does she have wide hips? The entire process of designing the runway samples occurs before models are cast for the show, which means that designers have to imagine what the model’s dimensions will be. Understandably, they opt for as much consistency as possible by selecting models that fit the same body type season after season. Not all fashion brands choose the same body type either.Generally speaking, taller, thinner figures are easier to design garment patterns around. Wide shoulders, large breasts, wide hips or a full butt all present pattern making challenges for the correct fitting of a garment, particularly when working with woven fabrics which may not stretch at all. Skinny runway models are easier to dress because their bodies have less variance. Pattern design work is therefore minimized which expedites the creative process and the production of garment samples. That efficiency saves fashion brands valuable time.None of this absolves the fashion industry from the social responsibility of representing diversity within the industry in all facets including body type, race, gender, sociopolitical background, religion, etc, but there are functional reasons why tall skinny body types are preferable to others.

Do I have to be skinny for modeling?

Do I have to be skinny for modeling?Speaking generally about fashion modeling... you don't have to be skinny, but you can't just be any size or proportion either. The way your body is shaped or weight is distributed still matters. Height matters. Your look matters. If you're not "skinny" per se and don't fall into a plus category then you will probably have a harder time overall, stuck in the middle.Plus Model Mag has this to say:Generally, modeling agencies are looking for plus size models who are between 5’9” and 6’0” and wear a size 10/12 to 14/16. Having said that, there ARE plus models who are making a living and do NOT fit the above criteria; I know these women personally and can attest to the fact that they have had to work harder to get to where they are in their careers. And an agency (that I know nothing about). Dorothy Combs ~ Representing Plus Size ModelsDorothy Combs Models looks for beautiful women sizes 10 and up. The height requirement for talent we represent is at least 5'9". New talent - please feel free to submit your pictures by e-mail or regular mail. Many well-known modeling agencies also have plus divisions. I'm answering the question as though you're someone seeking a career in modeling, but you can certainly do some modeling for a local brand or some photographers if you have a unique look and are able to connect with the right people.Good luck!.
