Why do some people still believe in witchcraft?

BQ: Why do some Christians still persecute supposed "witches"?

"Remember the witch hunts? Long ago and far away, past atrocities forgotten? So perhaps we should forgive and forget. Around the world, the Christian Bible is still used to accuse people, usually children, of "witchcraft" and to punish them. Refer to The Guardian, Sunday 9 December 2007, "Child 'witches' in Africa"; Huffington Post, October 18, 2009, "African Children Denounced As 'Witches' By Christian Pastors"; and The Guardian, Friday 31 December 2010, "Why are 'witches' still being burned alive in Ghana?" The scripture normally cited regarding witches is Exodus 22:18, and there are many more. In Ghana, a study found that "accused witches were physically brutalized, tortured, neglected, and in two cases, murdered." In Kinshasa, Congo, "80% of the 20,000 street children… are said to have been accused of being witches." Even to this day the Bible's proclamations against witches are still considered valid by many Christians. In places like Indonesia, Tanzania, the Congo and Ghana superstitious fundamental Christians actively pursue and execute witches, including murdering child "sorcerers." In Malawi, accused witches are routinely jailed........."

Why do some people believe in witchcraft?

It works. Whether it works or not, it is a powerful self empowering set of practices, that many disenfranchised people have embraced. Whether one is looking to strengthen themselves, find an edge in a difficult world, or to bolster ones own self esteem and view of themself, it is a helpful tool.Contrary to that, as the idea of witchcraft terrifies people in cultures because they have disenfranchised others. Most people that are afraid of witches, project their selfishness on people who may use magic for their own personal success. There is magic of various kinds, whether it is ceremonial magic, divine prayer, practicing beliefs to achieve spiritual gifts, and witchcraft. Because witchcraft by most definition is outside of societal norms, suspected to be used for personal gain, and the individuals that are disenfranchised, are claimed to be witches to lend some moral legitimacy to further torturing the poor and downtrodden. At that point why. When one is so far down, any thing that gives one a chance will be tried.Mind you modern Wicca, and western concepts of witches and witchcraft have been reclaimed by a society in general with the idea of empowering women, and women and community practicing witchcraft, also include the worship of the divine with morals and ethical guidelines. Many people know of people who have the sight, who see the future, the truth, who by the grace of god may have the gifts of Ephesians 6 and II corinthians…. will still be considered a witch and meet anger, hatred and ostracization from their own christian community being called a witch and devil worshipper. But people know of people who heal, see the future, the truth, or have the right type of luck, and they may have natural talent, and are indistinguishable from witches. Why? Because it works and is part of the natural world.

Why would some people not believe in witchcraft?

If you mean why do they not believe in it's existence then that's probably because sometimes it's easier not to believe and just turn a blind eye to such things.

If you meant why they don't agree with it would be because the evil that's usually associated with it, Sure there's healing spells, confidence ones and whatever but opposite that is things about inflicting pain on others, or causing misfortune.

Do you believe in witchcraft?

The question has the answer contained within its wording. Witchcraft, black magic, voodoo, faith healing and all such practices are based on belief. Period. They only work if you believe in them. Belief is a powerful force. It is strong enough to manifest physical changes in the body either to harm or to cure the believer. But belief is the critical component for all such miracles. Medical science is full of documented accounts where doctors have provided sugar pills to patients who believed in the curative effects of the medicine they were prescribed and they improved through this "course of treatment". It's called the Placebo Effect. If you don't believe in witchcraft or magic, then it won't work on you. End of story. As a side note: people who know about the Placebo Effect and sugar pills don't improve much either - then real work is required to affect real change. The conclusion? It's all in your head. There is no such thing as "magic" in this universe apart from that demonstrated by stage magicians. And even they are still following the laws of physics, but fooling the human brain by capitalizing on psychology governed by the biological design of the human brain. The rigid, immutable natural laws don't allow for demons and deities, witchcraft or spell casting, ghosts, goblins and unicorns (unless they are a branch of an evolutionary species). Witchcraft is only possible among its followers exactly as much as faith healing is possible among the religious. When observed scientifically, it's all Placebo Effects or momentary self-delusions at best. You end up exactly where you started before the show. And if you don't believe in it in the first place, nothing changes.

Why do people believe in witches?

Because we know that evil is easier than good. Goodness takes work and we are inherently lazy and cynical.

Why do people in today's society believe in witchcraft?

Because witchcraft is real it's powers are real. These powers come from an understanding of the primordial elements that went into creating the World! That is why Witches worship nature and reveres trees and natural places. Witchcraft is really an extensions of very early British Pagan beliefs which I am not actually against at all - I am from the British Isles! It is not all devilry and worshipping dark forces or putting curses in people! Those magics are practised by black Witches not white Witches! I am not referring to people skin colour here of course! Also -Witchcraft or witchery broadly means the practice of and belief in magical skills and abilities exercised by solitary practitioners and groups. Witchcraft is a broad term that varies culturally and societally, and thus can be difficult to define with precision, and cross-cultural assumptions about the meaning or significance of the term should be applied with caution. Witchcraft often occupies a religious divinatory or medicinal role, and is often present within societies and groups whose cultural framework includes a magical world view.

Do people still believe in Witchcraft and Wicca today and how do they square such beliefs with the secular times we live in?

Read my post below and you will get an answer:Thiago Quirino's answer to What led you to the religious or nonreligious views you hold now?My family was involved in witchcraft for long time in Brazil before we invited Jesus Christ to clean up our destroyed lives. There is an entire world happening right now under our noses that most people don't have a clue about, and it influences everything in our lives, our jobs, our relationships, our well being, nothing escapes it. If you don't wish to read my post above, then at least watch the YouTube video below. I vouch for it 100% as my family and numerous others I know have faced similar situations. The video is not for the faint of heart, but it has a very happy ending:CONFESSIONS OF AN EX-SATANIST!Let me know if you have any questions. You can post a reply or text me privately. I will gladly answer them.

Where I come from, a lot of people believe in witchcraft. Do you think this is crazy?

Believe ‘in’ - in the fact that it’s real, that there’s a living being within witchcraft - that has power, power which is ‘real?’ One day the Lord Jesus revealed to me that I had a demon in me, a demon was in me when I was born. Continually for 3 days and 3 nights Jesus showed me more than a dozen demons, how they ‘work’ and I saw them enter into Human Creatures and operate, and destroy, destroy and destroy anything and everything, which is satan’s goal, to get as many of God’s people into his kingdom (Hell). He showed me their power, and He gave me power that is greater than their power, and I have seen and I have heard, and I have testified that which I have seen and heard, and those who do not understand, and those that do not believe, do not have the Spirit of God in them, and their names are not written in the Book of Life. The testimony of Jesus Christ reaches out to everyone, however, those who do not receive it, the pen is poised over their heads like an ax and their judgement will be upon them, and their name will be blotted out of the Book of Life (If it isn’t already) and written in the Book of the Dead and their judgement will be upon them. There is a clip here, which seems somewhat authentic based on my experience having had a demon cast out of me, which may interest you, which appears to show a dialogue between a demon and a priest - which is much how I would imagine witchcraft (I’m not familiar with ‘witchcraft’ per se) is powered - by demons. The clip is here, which I believe is a good example of demons and witchcraft titled: “Fallen Angel Talks of Hell’s Torment!”
