Why Is A 15-minute Quadrangle At 50 Degrees North Latitude Longer N-s Than It Is Wide E-w

How many 15-minute quadrangles are there in a 1-degree quadrangle?

1) 16 (4X4 grid)
2) Equator is the longest of all latitudes. As you go up towards north pole (or down towards south pole) from the equator, the total length of the parallels of latitude becomes shorter and shorter. But the division in each of them remains same (360). Therefore, each division length becomes shorter. 1degree in equator is much more in length than 1 degree at say 45 N. But in case of meridians of longitudes, the length remain more or less fixed. 1degree at 88 degree East or at 42 degree west are same in length. This is why your quadrangle at 50 deg lat has more horizontal distance than vertical distance.

Why is a fifteen minute quadrangle at 50 degrees north latitude longer than it is wide?

The only quadrangles that are square are the ones on the equator. The further north you are, the narrower they become. The 60 degree north (or south) latitude line is half the length of the equator, but is still 360 degrees.

What is 90 degrees North latitude?

Excellent question because, some 22 years ago, I wrote a program for my computer, to do simple navigation based on the GPS and my own digitized maps when I was out sailing from Norway to Spain. When testing the program, I entered 90 as the latitude and … end up with a total program error! ;-)Of course, the latitude 90 doesn’t exist as such. Neither does the longitude 180 east or west. It goes from 179 deg 59 min 59 sec east to 179 deg 59 min 59 sec west. Consider 90 N and 180 E like a “division by zero error” that you encounter when programming.

Why is there no higher latitude greater than 90 degrees north and south?

Here you can see that in the left picture latitudes are shown and in right longitudes.Observe all longitudes starts from the same point and ends in the same point, so that we have longitude 180 degree at diametrically opposite to 0 degree. We have 150 degree east at diametrically opposite to 30 degree west. Like this 120 degree east opposite to 60 degree west and so on. watch the globe carefully and notice that 30 degree west longitude alone cannot form the complete circle but it needs the diametrically opposite 150 degree east to complete the circle. Similarly, no longitude alone is able to form the complete circle alone, but they need their counter part longitude which is suited at diametrically opposite to form the complete circle. So we have a range of 0 to 360 degree of longitudes which comprises of 0 to 180 degree east and 0 to 180 west. Now let us come back to focus the question and see the left picture, you can see the zero degree equator is forming a circle alone unlike the case of longitude where 0 degree and 180 degree both together form the complete circle; in a way, we can say that 2 latitudes are being connected end to end. Similarly 30 degree latitude also forming the circle completely, again same explanation, what i want you to notice is neither all latitudes are starting from the same point nor ending at the same point. So, if we consider longitude range is 0 to 360 degree but because latitudes are lined in such a way that each latitude acts like 2 latitudes are connected end to end, so range of latitude should be 0 to 180 degree. The latitudes are actually 0 to 180 degree but they are named as 0 to 90 degree north and 0 to 90 degree south; that’s why, we cannot have higher latitudes greater than 90 degree north and south. Hope, i was able to elucidate properly.

How does 90 degrees north latitude and 90 degrees south latitude differ?

One is the North Pole, the other is the South Pole. They have similar climates in terms of being .. well .. polar climates.  Very cold.  Dark half the year, light half the year.  Far, far away from anything.Significantly, the North Pole is located in the ocean.  A semi-permanent ice flow means it is not open ocean at this point, however it is possible that if the planet warms up enough it may begin to experience ice-free summers.  The South Pole, however, is located deep within the Antarctic continent.  A very thick ice sheet covers the continental crust below.  It is obviously stable enough that a permanent research facility has been established there. For the most part they are fairly similar.

Where is 20 degrees north latitude?

Where Does Cocoa Come From?20 degrees north latitude is a circle around the Earth, parallel to the equator. This imaginary line passes through 21 countries (including 8 African nations, the Chinese island of Hainan, Hawaii, Cuba, and Haiti) and seven major bodies of water: The Red Sea, The Indian Ocean, The South China Sea, The Pacific Ocean, The Gulf of Mexico, The Caribbean Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean. The parallel defines part of the border between Libya and Sudan, and within Sudan it defines the border between the Northern and North Darfur states.20th parallel northIt passes directly through the city of Haikou (Coconut City (椰城) population 2 million), the capital of China's island province Hainan; and through Mexico City in the Valle de México (population 9 million, at an altitude of 2,240 metres (7,350 ft) above sea level), and it probably passes through a number of other interesting locations around the globe.20 degrees of latitude passes within 2 km of Lonar Lake in the Buldhana district, Maharashtra province, India - the site of a meteor impact during the Pleistocene Epoch and the only known hyper-velocity impact crater in basaltic rock anywhere on Earth. It also passes within the geographical limits of the city of Nashik, Maharashtra, India and through Wadi ad-Dawasir (وادي الدواسر), Saudi Arabia, and passes 155 km south of Mecca (مكة المكرمة), Islam’s holiest city and the site of the Ka’aba (الكعبة), a pilgrimage destination for many of the Islamic faith.HaikouMexico CityNashik, Maharashtra, IndiaList of cities by latitudeThis latitude’s complement, 20 degrees south latitude, passes directly through Port Louis on the island nation of Mauritius and through Port Hedland in Western Australia. It passes very nearly through other cities on the continents of Africa and South America.

Which notable cities are located on 30 degrees north latitude?

The 30th parallel north technically only passes directly through:Houston, Texas (29º45') - 6.3 million live in the metro area, America's 5th biggest. Some cities that are very close to the 30th parallel, going east from the Prime Meridian:Cairo, Egypt (30º3') - Egypt's capital and largest city. Cairo is home to approximately 20 million and is arguably the most important cultural and political hub of the Arab World and Middle East.Shiraz, Iran (29º37') - One of Iran's largest cities, with 1.5 million people. Shiraz has been a center of culture and trade for over a thousand years.Multan, Pakistan (30º11') - With a population of 2 million it is Pakistan's fifth largest city. Multan is one of the world's oldest, blanketed with ornate mosques, tombs, shrines and bazaars.Chongqing, China (29º33') - With an urban area of 6.7 million, it is one of China's largest and most important cities, on par with Shanghai, Baijing and Guangzhou.Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China (30º15') - With an urban population of 7 million, it has been one of the most renowned and prosperous cities in China for much of the last millennium. It is known for beautiful natural scenery. Ningbo, Zhejiang, China (29º52') - Major coastal city of approx. 3.5 million, just south of Shanghai. Ningbo has one of the busiest ports in the world.Austin, Texas (30º15') - Capital of Texas, with a rapidly growing metro area of 1.9 million.New Orleans, Louisiana (29º57') - Largest city in Louisiana with a metro of 1.2 million, one of America's oldest and most culturally distinct major cities.Jacksonville, Florida (30º20') - With a population of just over 1.0 million, one of Florida's largest metro areas. Tourism services and a major deep-water port give this city importance.

Why is there no latitude higher than 90 degrees?

Where would you put it?Latitude is an angular coordinate measured at the centre of the earth. You project a line from there to the equator, and another to the thing you are trying to locate. If the thing you are locating is on the equator, then the angle between two lines is zero (zero degrees of latitude)If the thing you are trying to locate is the Hauptmarkt in Nürnberg, the angle is 49.4547 degrees. If the thing you are trying to locate is at theNorth Pole, the angle is 90 degrees. If you go beyond the North Pole, the angle starts to decrease again, because (in effect) you are coming down the other side. When you are at the North Pole, The line you are drawing is “upright”. How can you be “more upright than upright”?
