Look.. its tough but not impossible.First of all, I am a Chelsea fan but I don’t hate United I do like them too.There are 2 ways to qualify for the champions league:Finish top 4 in Premier league:It looks tough. As of now they are having 41 pts(as of 26th Jan) 4 behind 4th placed Liverpool. The main problem is their schedule , they are in a good form right now nut European football will return soon and the fact they are in the league cup and the fa cup does not help them considering Liverpool have no European football at all. Same goes for City, Spurs and Arsenal. But Arsenal will be knocked out by FC Bayern and City are 5th . So they need to be in top form in these months.2. Win the Europa LeagueThis is realistic since this year Europa League don’t have a lot of strong teams. No Sevilla. Major threats are Schalke, Roma, Spurs, Shaktar, Gladbach, Bilbao, Villareal,and some other teams. It looks much easier but remember last year Liverpool had the same plan but they failed at last. So if they are aiming to win Europa league they have to be really careful.Tldr: this is going to be a tough season for Manchester United. It would be foolish to rule them out but it would also be foolish to expect it. United do not have the best squad in the Champions league. City, Barcelona, and PSG would be the teams to beat this season. At the same time Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Juventus have performed consistently well in this competition in recent years. These six teams would be my top teams to win it. However, outside of these, United would be top pick. Mourinho's ability in one off matches can never be underestimated. He is a genius in nullifying the opposition's threats. In a knockout competition those skills are very valuable as portrayed by Diego Simeone and Atletico Madrid. One can expect United to have a good run in the Champions league. Whether they can perform against the top teams remains a mystery. Football is unpredictable and United's performances this season have mirrored that unpredictability.

For a team from the premier League to be playing in the uefa champions league, the team has to either be in the top 4 or win the previous years champions and then directly qualify for the UCL. If the team is in the top 3 of the premier league that team directly enters the group stages of the UCL, and if it is in the 4th position then it needs to play a qualifier first. And as far as Manchester United are concerned they came 7th in the 2013-14 season, that is why they are not in the Champions League in the 2014-15 season and they were knocked out from the UCL by bayern Munich in the quarter finals last year.

Manchester united sit in 4th place after 26 games. The teams behind them are Tottenham, Liverpool ,Southamptom . Out of these United play two of them in coming weeks. Considering the record of Van Gaal and Man Utd against big clubs this season i think they will perform gud and will take reasonable point out of these games to make them hang on to the fourth or third place.Now as van persie is injured so it will be either falcao in front (which looks a bit to ambitious now) or most probably Rooney will play which gives Mata the chance to play in his best role , the no. 10 role. I , myself being a man utd fan strongly feels that in coming days you will see a much better run of performances from man utd.And as everybody knows man utd have the beat fans in the world who will stick with them.GGMU
