Why Were The Us Presidents Mostly White

Why were all the Presidents of the United States white?

They were all white before 2009 becauseFor the first 90 years of the Republic, they weren't eligible; For the next 130 years, prejudice and bigotry (notice that I did not say racism — racism played a part for some, but mostly it was bigotry and prejudice. Most 21st Century Americans don't know the difference.)Blacks comprise 12% of the population. That's a small number. For those who wish to say it's America's shameful history of racism, let me ask:How many black Prime Ministers have France, Germany, the UK, Canada, Mexico, Egypt, Norway, or Spain had? How many First Nations members have been the PM of Canada? How many white folk have been elected to PM or President positions in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, or Ethiopia in the past 20 years? The color of a person's skin shouldn't matter, yet there are hordes of folks who judge everything by color, including well-meaning progressives .

Why is the President of the United States still almost always played by a white actor?

This is still completely the case, as proven by the statistics and lists that are supposed to disprove it. 87.5% of the actors who have portrayed the president in the most recent 48 movies on Wikipedia's list of people who have portrayed American presidents have been white men. Why? Mostly because to date 97.8% of actual American presidents have been white men. This means there is a powerful, and (to date) statistics-backed image of what a president "looks" like. When you have this sort of bias, it is hard to fight both internally and externally. Even when some people overcome their own inherent tendency toward seeing a president as a white male, it has often been used as a storytelling element. Several decades of "black president" roles were cast to show that America has, at least in this one fictional world, moved forward in its conversation on race, or to show that it is vaguely "the near future". And at least one of the movies from the answer wiki, Chris Rock in Head of State, was the story of a political party's smoky back room operatives only picking a non-white candidate because they thought the election was doomed anyway, so it might as well be doomed in ways that would lay the groundwork for later elections. This story will change over time, because much of the inertia I described came from a 100% white data set. It is no longer enough to show "more progressive America" by casting a black actor. It'd be nice to say that this means this storytelling hack will go away, but it's more likely that it'll just change its clothes. Expect future asteroid strikes, zombie plagues, terrorist invasions of Ohio, and central-Asian prisoner extractions to be overseen not by a president who looks like Chris Rock, but by one who looks like Danny Pudi.

Why are there so many redheads that were US presidents?

I don’t know that so many presidents were redheads. Around seven presidents were redheads during their lives, but a couple had red hair as president. The President most famous for being a redhead was Thomas Jefferson. He has red hair for most of his life.George Washington was a redhead as a young man, but he often heavily powdered his hair so that it appeared white.2. President Andrew Jackson had red hair when he was young, but when he was president, his hair was mostly gray/white.3. Martin van Buren had red hair as a young man, but his hair was white as President.4. Rutherford B. Hayes hair was reddish-brown, and he had a red beard.5. William Howard Taft’s hair was close to red.6. Calvin Coolidge had red hair.7. John F. Kennedy’s hair was reddish-brown.While there is a very small percentage of the population that actually has red hair, there were only four presidents that actually had true red hair. The other examples of red hair were reddish-brown, so the percentage of presidents with red hair is close to the national average.

Which of the following U.S. presidents was >MOST< evil?

*TEN [10] POINTS TO MOST THOROUGH EXPLANATION*

>>Reagan - Puppet to corporatism, did some nasty stuff in the Middle East

Do the President of the United States and his family have to live in the White House?

No.  There is no way to force the POTUS and First Family to live there.  Generally speaking, the nature of American politics ensures that a president will live there because:While the POTUS is commander and can override the Secret Service (by executive order), they spend that period between election and swearing in (when the president-elect has no authority), coaching the President & First Family on protocol, managing their behavior with a focus on just how dangerous their life now is.  Everything from murder to kidnappings is possible.  I know a lot of presidents likely have diminished empathy (I tend to think it goes with the job), but nobody wants to be killed and I doubt they want to put their family through what Kennedy's went through. They make the location irresistible to live in.  It's huge and comes filled with a level of luxury and service that (1) they deserve and (2) they need (since leaving isn't always an option).  The presidency requires one human to make so many decisions, that they have to alleviate the stress elsewhere and remove it by making it safe and making it accommodating to him (soon a her I hope) and his family.  The President needs to be a salesman.  He just cannot be a dick and say, "Too bad.  My way."  And live like that.  It endangers his party, his platform, his mission and his legacy.  He is likely to --even if he hates it-- (and none have expressed negativity about living in the WH) live there to make appearances right.  There's a tradition of American presidents working in the oval office and speaking on the steps to the Mansion. Many presidents have also stayed at the Blair House and at Camp David for a time.  These facilities are designed to not only have the full functionality to house the First Family, but also have access for servants, protection and to get the POTUS where he needs to go.

Who was the craziest U.S. President?

I  don't know what your definition of "craziest" is, but for me, William  Henry Harrison would be on the list.  By the time he became president, he didn't have enough sense to  take care of his own health.  On the day of his  inauguration, Harrison apparently wanted to look strong, so he rode on  horseback with out an overcoat or even a hat in the miserable, wet  weather.  He wanted to look educated, so (still in the miserable  weather, sans hat and overcoat) he read the two-hour speech he'd written and then went to at least three grand balls that evening.  (Harrison still holds the record for having the longest inaugural speech of the U.S. presidents.  I doubt if there are any other U.S. office holders who have had longer ones, especially under such miserable conditions.)Once in the White House, he didn't set appointment times for well-wishers  and other visitors, but saw as many as he could, all through the day and into the night, while doing much of the  footwork to implement his goals.  He kept reminding everyone, including statesman Daniel Webster, that he was the President of the United States and that he was in charge, but he didn't take charge of his own life. In  the few weeks of his administration, he didn't give himself any time  for rest or recovery.  It is no wonder that he contracted pneumonia  (probably from exhaustion), and died.

Who was/is the most personally honorable President in U.S. history? Did his character and integrity make a real positive difference, or did it hobble his ability to either compromise or be decisive?

I will answer this with a few caveats:No man is a saint. You can find character flaws in any human being, including any of the 45 Presidents. And it’s entirely subjective as to which of those flaws are the most glaring to someone else.As I’ve said before, to be an effective POTUS, sometimes a person has to be an SOB. It’s part of the job. Try to be a nice guy all of the time and you’re Jimmy Carter, who was personally honorable but also a completely ineffective President. With that said, there have been plenty of Presidents who were generally men of good personal integrity, but were still flawed human beings just like anyone else. Just for a few examples, George Washington owned slaves, Ulysses S. Grant drank too much, Abraham Lincoln was a racist, Grover Cleveland was at least guilty of ungentlemanly behavior toward a woman, and possibly much worse. John F. Kennedy was a serial philanderer. Both Carter and Ronald Reagan had episodes where they pandered to racists for political gain.If I had to pick any one person, it would probably be Harry Truman, which won’t be a surprise to a lot of my regular readers. But even that comes down to personal values. A lot of people would blanch at choosing the man who ordered “The Bomb” to be dropped on anyone. I agree with Truman’s own view—as odious as it was, many more would have died if he hadn’t given the order.Sometimes you have to be an SOB to be the President.

Does the president of the US pay for all of his food or is it a taxpayer expense?

Brian Dunlap hit it right on the head. So, I'll just enhance that information. The president of the US receives $400,000 per year (which is low, considering the inflation-adjusted pay for Taft was $1.8 million and for most presidents, it hovered around $1 million per year, which I think is fair†). The president also receives a $100,000 travel allowance for non-official travel and a $50,000 expense account to help defer non-official expenses and the taxes thereof---including, you guessed it, food for the Residence (which is the name for the top floor of the White House where the current president and his family lives. What does this all mean:Like any elected federal official, the President gets some paid time off from the job for which Uncle Sam is willing to foot the bill. I have no idea how much time this is, but it's probably an accounting nightmare. Let's just assume that he gets three vacations a year. The costs of getting Trump’s family from point A to point B aren't totally free. He receives free travel (with restrictions) within the USA by AF1 because, no matter what, he's still the president and part of the cost of being in office is forever being shielded and watched by staffers, whether he wants it or not. So, while the staff and fuel of AF1 might be covered, the actual expenses of other things (like shipping his luggage and hostelry) may not be covered, thus the 100k travel allowance. The $50,000 expense account is there mostly to help defer the taxes on items he purchases like sundries and personal items for the Residence. All of the staff is covered and the cleaning and the furniture that is owned by the National Park Service & the non-profit White House Historical Association (which helps furnish and maintain the historic pieces within the WH). http://whitehouse.gov1.info/visi...†The POTUS should be well paid while in office. The CEO of Kohls gets a million dollars per year, of Walmart something like 20 million dollars per year, for Ford, something like 10 million dollars per year. The President should be paid in "multiples of the per-capita income as established by the treasurer of the US every four years" in order to avoid having to constantly adjust it (25 x the PCI would be about right). http://bber.unm.edu/econ/us-pci.htm
