If I didn't work can I get a tax refund?

Maybe yes, but probably no.I can’t give you a definitive answer, as I don’t know anything about you or your financial life. Here is how this works.Taxable income creates a tax liability — the amount you will owe the government for any given tax year. For most people, payments against this liability are made throughout the year when you work as an employee via automatic payroll tax deductions. Generally, this represents the bulk of the difference between your gross pay and your take-home pay. When the cumulative amount of your payments exceed your liability, as computed by the tax return you file, you get a refund. When the amount of your payments is less than your liability, then you pay additional taxes, when filing your tax return. With that being said, there are less common situations were you can earn income without working. You may receive money through dividends, experience gains on the sale of investments (i.e. stocks, real estate, etc.), social security, pensions, unemployment compensation, disability compensation and other retirement plans, to name a few.To the extent that the proceeds you receive from these ‘other’ forms of income were net of any federal and/or applicable state income taxes, you have paid taxes. As with the above discussion, when you do your tax return, should those taxes be greater than the eventual tax liability that is calculated, then the answer to your question is yes, you will receive a refund for the difference (without having worked at any time during the tax year).

If you owe money to the IRS, can you still get your tax refund?

In Australia generally not, but there are exceptions.Where a debt cannot be pursued by reason of provisions of the Bankruptcy Act or the insolvency provisions of the Corporations Act;Where the Commissioner has released you from the debt for reasons of hardship;Where the Commissioner has executed a Deed of Compromise accepting partial payment in satisfaction of the debtWhere the Minister of Finance has made a decision to waive the debtIn hardship cases, sometimes a refund can be issued despite a debt being on file.

If I quit my job, will I still get a tax return?

No. You never "get" a tax return. You FILE a tax return. Quitting a job does not change that. If your income exceeds the filing requirement, you must file a return.

When you file your return, if you get any money back, that's called a REFUND. You get a REFUND if you paid in more than what your tax liability is. Quitting a job does not change that either.

Will tax refunds still be issued if the government shuts down again on February 15th 2019?

Most permanent and full time seasonal IRS employees have been issued the required notice that their positions are classified “excepted” and will be required to report for duty as scheduled in the event of another lack of funding shutdown Feb 15.

Can a tax refund still get audited if it’s processing?

Audits happen after processing of the return. When you file the IRS has not yet received all the information from employers, banks, brokerage houses, social security etc. It takes a few months for all that information to be received and sorted out by the computer to individual people. Most audits happen between a year or two after the return is received. It is extremely rare that a return would be identified for audit before the IRS received all the info from payors of taxable income. It can happen if other of your returns are already under audit. But that is a rarity. Unless you make an addition or subtraction error or have dome something egregious in the past your return gets processed as is and the refund claimed gets sent to you.If you do get audited, or receive a CP2000 notice for income left off your return, you will owe interest from the due date of the return,( so a year or two of interest) and you'll owe some penalties. They basically continue into paid in full.

Will I still get my tax refund if the government remains shut down into February?

Right now government is functioning. Do you mean if Trump shuts the government down again in February?Trump will huff and he will puff, but it will be political suicide for him to shut the government down again and risk a second black eye from Pelosi; but never under estimate Trump's ability to do something stupid. The IRS is dealing with a backlog of 5 million enquiries and some employees have quit. They have 1000 new employees, but they are not fully trained and lack experience. You will get your refund…someday. Oh ye of little faith. Those people are from the government, and they are here to help.

Still haven't received federal tax refund?

I submitted my federal return on 1/30/13 and received an email a few days later stating it wouldn't be accepted until 2/14/13 because of the education credits. For two weeks WMR said the return was being processed and just a few days ago it changed and I can no longer see the bars and it only displays a message stating "Your tax return is still being processed. A refund date will be provided when available." However, it's now 3/12/13 and the message hasn't changed. I called the IRS on my 21st day and they told me there was nothing wrong with my return and that every tax payers situation is different so while some filed after me and have already received their return it doesn't mean I will receive my return in the same time frame. The representative also told me the 21 days is not a guarantee and that there was no other information she could give me. I'm EXTREMELY frustrated at this point and don't know what's going on but hopefully we will receive deposit dates soon!

Will people still receive tax refunds during the government shutdown?

If the shutdown keeps up, probably. If not, it depends on how fast the IRS can ramp up from being closed down for so long.
