Will Putting Two Doses Of Advantage Ii On My Cat Harm Her

What happens if you accidentally put Advantage II (for dogs) on a cat?

It's the same medication for cats as it is for dogs. The only difference is the amount in the vials. If you put a full dog dose on the cat then that's when it could get sick. Here's someone talking about it in a forum http://www.catforum.com/forum/38-health-...

I use the regular Advantage for my dog, cats and ferrets and buy the largest dog packaging. The 90;b dog gets one full vial, the cats get .8ml each and the ferrets get .2ml. Been doing this for years and saving SO much money AND staying flea free.

Goldie - you should that posting "please answer my question" and the link on EVERY answer you give is considered "Solicitation" and a really quick way to end up kicked off of here. Nearly TWENTY TIMES in the last 24 hours. Kiss this account bye bye.

edit: No, YOU'RE wrong. The article I linked to is about Advantage II. There is no "Advantage 2" its II which is Roman Numerals for TWO. Look here - what does it show for ingredients in each? http://www.1800petmeds.com/Advantage+II+... Why ask questions on here if you're going to argue with those that know what they're talking about? And why not take the TWO SECONDS it took me to find information like that? Also just realized it's Advantage II I've been using on my dog/cats/ferrets as 800petmeds doesn't even carry the old Advantage anymore.

The ONLY reason is says "don't use on cats" on the dog doses is most people are idiots and they would put the entire dose on the cat and they'd be overdosing since the DOSE is way more than they need. The company also makes FAR more money selling the various sizes so people will spend a LOT more money on it if they have various sized pets.

If you don't want to believe me, vets, multiple websites that state this fine - I could care less that you piss away money you don't have to. Just don't tell me I'm wrong when I'm not.

Can my cat overdose from Advantage?

GET HIM TO A VET NOW!! that will kill him K9 adavantage is for dogs only get him to a vet now or he will go into convoulsions and DIE!! HURRY!! hes has to be treated immediately before it's too late to save him!!!

NOTE: MARC18
I hate to argue with you but that is NOT what they should do as the cat will die from having K9 advantage put on him!! My Mother-n-law thought the same thing a few hours later "Mooky" stated running around acting weird, then drooling and breathing heavily, started shaking and finially I begged her to take him to the vet!! they almost lost him and the cat was in the vet's for a week!! Cat's systems are more sensitive to the active chemicals in flea products that's why you will always see flea products seperate for cats and dogs!!

What happens if you give a dog two doses of advantage, if the first dose didn't go into the skin?

i wouldnt do that unless your vet says its ok, this could overdoes this strong chemical and can make your dog really sick... can sometimes cause death or a real big reaction. the only way i can see this being ok is if the product was not the weight of the dog and the dog was bigger or it was almost the end of the 4 week period. be very careful. i work in a petstore and it seems when you put the same product on the dog every month it stops working to its full affect, ive heard some people changeing to frontline and having that work.
i wanted to add if you put it on the fur it goes to the skin quickly, its an oil it wont just stay on the fur, also i wouldnt be worried you dont see fleas on the bed, that just probably means its working and your dog has no fleas, if you still see live fleas, you have to remember the flea wont die unless he bites your dog, a flea can still live on the dog because they dont get the poison and die unless they bite the dog.

How fast can I apply a second dose of advantage?

Don't do it yet!-- you can not reapply for a month. There are pesticides in these products with dosing instructions for a reason. You can make your cat or dog VERY SICK by overapplying these products, which can lead to pesticide poisoning and even death. Find an herbal spray or bathe your cat WITHOUT any more chemicals for the next month. Next month, you can try a different medication until something works. Unfortunately, when it comes to flea medications, sometimes you have to change brands (let's say, to Frontline Plus) because the fleas become resistant to the medication in your region. I've had to do this before (change brands), and it worked... ^_^

Can I use Advantage flea treatment for cats on dogs?

Yes you can. The regular Advantage is the same exact formula for dogs and cats and all sizes. DO NOT do this with K9 Advantix or Advantage Multi!

My vet let me in on this secret when she gave me Advantage for large cats for my two chihuahua puppies. The dosage for 1 large cat is exactly twice what each dog needs, so I use a syringe (no needle) to measure the exact dosage for each dog. This saves me $45 each time I need more Advantage because I can split it in two for each dog.

Further, the dosage for a cat is much smaller than what would be required for your 60 pound dog. You can use the cat Advantage on her but it will be a weak dosage. It may or may not rid her completely of fleas, but it will not harm her either.

My cat was given a double dose of frontline plus this morning having a reaction?

You should keep a close eye on him, but he should be fine - especially if you have used the normal amount of Frontline Plus on him before, and he had no bad reaction.

To quote from the website linked as my source :

- Fipronil and methoprene is a topical agent and temporary irritation at the site of application is possible.

- Overdose is rare and no adverse effects have been reported even up to 5 times the dose.

Obviously, if you see any sypmtoms other than local irritation, get him to the vet!

To the person who suggested bathing the cat : Frontline Plus is an oil-based product, if you bath a cat after applying frontline plus, you actually force the frontline through the cat's skin even faster than the normal absorbtion rate. I'm sure you meant well(and no thumbs down from me!), but this isn't a good idea.

EDIT : I'm a fan of Capstar, too, it can be a godsend. However its purpose is to kill all the fleas which are on the cat right NOW (and it does so very quickly). It is best used hit hard at an already-existing flea infestation.

However, it gives no lasting protection - the cat can get fleas again after only a couple of days - which is why we have Frontline, Advantage and Revolution etc.

Can you apply two doses of Frontline in one month? PLEASE PLEASE HELP!?

If you've got so many fleas in your house that they are biting you, then what is happening is that they are jumping on your dog faster than the Frontline can kill them. Remember, 90% of the flea problem is the immature fleas in your carpet. Getting his feet wet should not have affected the Frontline.

I would continue to use the Frontline and not Give up yet. If you are sure the Frontline is not working, see if you can get another type of flea product from your vet - like Advantage - and use that on your dog. It's not that you'll overdose the Frontline - it's very safe and if you used another dose it shouldn't hurt your dog - it's that it is not likely to be any more effective. Whatever you choose, you will probably have to keep using some sort of household treatment too. http://www.fleabusters.com makes a very good indoor treatment that is much less toxic than most household treatments.

(Frontline prevents fleas by killing them - it's not a repellent at all. If it were a repellent, you wouldn't be seeing tons on your dog. It truly kills fleas, but it takes a few hours. By the end of the 30 days, it can take a day or two. Fleas biting humans is a sign that the problem is very bad - they don't ever choose to bite people if a dog is available. Problems this bad can take a couple months of dilligently using flea treatments to clear up. Make sure to treat every animal in the house.)
