Will Recieving A Bad Grade In Pe Hurt My Chances Of Getting Into College

If I get a B in GYM, will it affect my chance of getting into college?

I'm a freshman in high school. For the past 3 years in middle school, I've been getting all A's. In high school, I've been getting all A's too. But in this quarter of the school year, my gym teacher informed the whole class that we have to pass these physical exams, where you have to do pushups and curl ups and stuff, and it counts as 33% of our physical education grade.

Well, let me tell you one thing. I'm pretty sure I will not be able to enough pushups or run a mile fast enough to get a good grade.

So I'm pretty certain that I will probably receive something lower than an A. And if I get a B, then I'll get something lower than a 4.0 GPA.

Do colleges care if you don't get an A in GYM? Because I've heard somewhere that colleges don't really look at the grades you get in physical education. Or do colleges just look at your GPA? And if they do, will they look at your GPA in your freshman year of high school?

Thanks. (:

What are my chances of getting into a good college?

I am currently a high school junior and I'm wondering what colleges I should consider applying to.

My current weighted GPA is 5.13 and unweighted is 3.93. My SAT scores from when I took it for the first time without studying was 1840 but I plan to take it again with intense preparation.

9th grade I took AP World History (got a 5), Anatomy & Physiology, Biology Honors, Geometry Honors, English 1 Honors (received an outstanding student award), and TV Productions.

10th grade I took AP Human Geography (got a 5), Spanish 1, Chemistry Honors, Pre-AP English, Biotechnology (got an Outstanding student award), and Algebra II Honors. I also took Spanish 2 and PE classes over the summer.

This year, I'm taking AP US History, AP English Language, AP Biology, Pre-Calc Honors, Art 1, and Epidemiology. I took the SAT Subject tests for US History, Lit and Bio but am still awaiting my results.

Next year I plan to take AP Government & Economic, AP English Literature, AP Calculus, AP Environmental Science, Advanced (Not AP though) Art, and Biomedical Research.

As for my extracurriculars:

9th - Treasurer of SADD Club, in Heritage Club, and Helping Knights, a school-based community service club
10th - Historian of Book Club, Class Secretary in SGA, in HOSA (4th place at regionals), in National Honors Society and in Helping Knights again
11th - in Book Club, National Honors Society, National English Honors Society, HOSA (Historian, won at regionals and states, competing at Nationals), and President and founder of Key Club
12th - I'm going to be Treasurer of HOSA, President of Key Club, Secretary of NEHS, and in National Honors Society

I've done a summer of doing a research internship at a local university and a previous summer working as a summer camp CIT. I've also started campaigns in my school, from Trick or Treat for UNICEF, to a sanitation drive for the local homeless, food drives, etc. I've helped out a family friend with their non-profit organization to teach young kids a foreign language.

My dream school is Rice University and I hope to shoot for other sub-Ivy schools, including UNC Chapel Hill and Boston University.

What would appear to be my chances of getting into these schools, maybe even with a scholarship?

I got a detention for skipping class (Gym). Will this affect my chance of getting into an Ivy League?

No it is highly unlikely that it will (for a single instance). Be mindful to avoid any disciplinary history on your student profile. This can negatively impact your chances. Schools want to avoid trouble makers for the obvious reasons.Don't skip gym, it was the best part of high school. Good luck!

Chances of getting into phillips exeter academy?

You have a very good chance indeed of getting into Exeter.

From what you've indicated above, some of your strongest assets in terms of admissions are the following:

*your grades (mostly A's; keep up the good work);
*strong writing skills (680 on early issue SAT essay section);
*study of at least one second language;
*strong math ability (99th percentile, Algebra ERB);and
*involvement in, and commitment to, community and extracurricular activities (very important at Exeter)

In addition, based on your standardized testing scores, you should do quite well on your SSATs.

If you haven't done so already, you might want to check out Exeter's "Profile of a Successful Applicant" on their website. http://www.exeter.edu/documents/Student_...

Beyond that, I would encourage you to devote enough time and energy to Application essay(s) to ensure that they are thoughtfully rendered and *very* well written.

Certainly do not hesitate to apply for financial aid, although you must do so at the same time you apply for admissions to Exeter. Bear in mind, however, that Exeter expects both parents to be employed for financial aid consideration. (If only one parent is employed, an acceptable explanation for his/her lack of employment should be provided.) For more information on financial aid, see http://www.exeter.edu/admissions/147_351... and http://www.exeter.edu/admissions/15848.a...

Best of luck to you.

Do colleges look at high school attendance during applications?

Thanks for the A2A, Daniela!I’ve never seen a transcript that mentions attendance. It’s far more important that you do well in your classes and stay involved in your passions and your community than that you go to school every single day. However, repeated absences and truancy that results in lowered grades and/or disciplinary action will definitely be passed along on your transcript to the colleges you are applying to.In addition, most of the colleges request a general letter of recommendation from your counselor (even the ones who don’t request letters from teachers), and he or she will have access to your attendance records. If he or she sees something there that raises a red flag, they may decide to mention that in your recommendation. The bottom line is that its not necessary to kill yourself to get to class every single day, but you do need to attend class regularly unless you have a really good reason (like an illness). Not going to class will limit the colleges you can apply to, because it will knock down your GPA and may result in detention/suspension.

Want to be a teacher - will low GPA hurt my chances of getting a job?

It took me 10 years to get my teaching degree and then after one year of teaching, I decided I couldn't make it another year. I got jobs for minimum wage for 3 years until I decided to try again. This time I got a job at a private school for much less than the public schools were paying, but it got my foot back into the door of teaching and gave me a resume. I taught there for 3 years until I had burned all of my bridges there.
For the last 5 years, I have taught at the local public school and have done well.
My grades in college were mostly C's, but my student teaching grade was a 'D' and the professor thought I should repeat it, but I said I'd take my chances.
Nobody has ever asked to see my grades. They just want to know if you have the certification. If they like YOU, your GPA isn't super important.
Most adults who have any sense understand what it's like to have hardships and they probably have been through some themselves.
I wouldn't spill all of your personal history to the job interviewer, but you might have to explain your work history. I say 'Go for it'!!!
Good luck!

What do you think my chances are of receiving an appointment to the U.S.A.F. Academy?

To start off, I am only a freshman in high school. I understand that a lot can happen in four years, but if I stay on the track I'm on, how well do you think I will do in the application process for the academy?

I am taking the following classes:
Honors English
Honors Algebra
Honors Biology
AFJROTC
Spanish
Health/P.E. (required)
Choir (Some form of an art is required)

I usually earn somewhere around a 3.5, however, now, we get an extra point added to our GPA so lets just say I get anywhere between a 3.5 and a 4.5 on a 4.0 GPA scale.

I play football. I am a starting middle linebacker, I am on kick-off, kick-off return, punt, and obviously punt return/defense. I am also doing color guard and drill team through AFJROTC. I plan on being as active as possible in the corps and earning a leadership position in the corps.

Assuming I get a nomination from the appropriate person, and my SAT/ACT scores are good, what do you think my chances are?

I understand that there are a lot of dependent variables but I'm just looking for some re-assurance and I want to make sure I'm not wasting my time on anything.

Do Gym grades count toward college?

I'm a freshman in high school and our gym department sucks! They grade terribly. They tell us we won't be graded for skills, but I see right in my grade: Skill test - 66%. I currently have an 85, but they make their exams way too hard and boast about how they are "college level exams", where I bet that none of them could ace it themselves. Gym does not count towards you GPA here, but I was wondering how much you ability to do sit-ups affects college applications. If you got a low grade in P.E., will it hurt your chances for an Ivy-league school?

What if I get a high 70?
