Would I Be Put In A Mental Institution

Can you be in a mental institution forever?

yes, if you are a danger to yourself or others they can have you civilly committed to a hospital. if you never improve, then you may never get out. of course, if you get to be an elderly person, they might discharge you to an adult care home. depends on the laws and resources in your state and how its system is set up

Reasons to be put in a mental hospital?

It depends on the institute but the key is that the patients are at risk of neglecting/hurting themselves or others. Most institutions have a 'forensic' ward which hold the more dangerous patients who have committed crimes while being mentally ill, while a lot are merely being supervised and have mostly free reign. A lot of these patients are there due to the results of drug abuse or childhood trauma in one form of another which has led to their poor mental health be in schizophrenia PTSD serious self harming or more indefinable issues which still make them a risk and therefore cannot function without support. People are unlikely to be admitted for straight up depression unless linked with other mental issues as there are a huge amount of people who can be considered at risk and they have to take in the priority patients (most at risk to themselves or others).

To Justin, I am sure that in some countries (god knows what goes on) this might be a possibility but in every case? there are no people who are seriously messed in the head I suppose? More often than not its not about being suicidal - its about being found in a house full of dead cats and budgies because they don't realise the creatures need to eat or being absolutely terrified because the toaster is channelling their dead mother and she doesn't want them to eat breakfast! That's the kind of crap these people see everyday not some freaking person who might have said something about a half arsed attempt at a vague suicide threat.

Could I get put in a mental institute?

They will only put you in a mental hospital if you are a danger to yourself or others. That means are you going to kill yourself and do you have a plan. If you answer yes, then they can Baker Act you for 72 hours. (put you in the hospital)

But you are allowed to talk about suicide. The job of the therapist is to see if you are detailed enough that you are actually going to do it and what method you would use. Therapists know some methods are more dangerous than others.

How do i go about putting my mom into a mental hospital for evaluation?

my mother has been out of control for as long as i can remember. when i was younger she used to leave me at different places, for example, she left me in downtown OKC in the middle of the night and said that she waited for me but i never came so she went home (which, we lived on the opposite side of town.) she left me in bricktown in the middle of the night because she got mad at me. and many more. Now i have moved out of her house, unfortunatly my 10 year old sister is having to deal with my mothers phycosis. she wont let my sister out of her sight because she is afraid that she is going to get molested by someone. my mom left my sister with my grandma for a couple of weeks, but when my grandma started talking about sending my sister to church camp, my mother freaked out and said that if she went she would get molested. i have just found out that my mom got mad at my grandma and game to get my sister.my mother has also been talking about moving to georgia, and leaving my sister with her dad, who doesnt want to take her because he works constantly, and just taking her 6 months out of the year. i know that something needs to be done about my mom, i am just unsure about how to go about doing this. i know that my mothers house is not a good place to live, her ceiling is falling down in the house, there is no heat or A/C, and the bathrooms flood (leaving mold behind.) this is not a good environment for my sister and she needs out, please help me!!!

Can my mom put me in a mental hospital?

We assume that I have bipolar disorder II. In addition to my mood swings I also have violent outbursts. My dad is looking into child protective services and my mom says I belong in a mental hospital. I'm 14 and don't really know what I'm allowed to do. I have a psychiatrist that I have an appointment with this week. Can my dad really "ship me away"?

What would get someone put in a mental hospital?

You can be mandated into a Mental Institution or Hospital if you are a danger to yourself or others. My son was just put into a Mental Hospital against his will and he eloped twice necessitating helicopters to track him down and bring him back. He was in a manic episode and his mind was racing so fast that he got migrane headaches. He jumped fromt he upstairs bedroom windows and pulled everything from inside the house and put it on the front lawn. He did all of this within hours. It took me two days, with the help of friends, to put the stuff back.

Hope this helped. Good luck 2U.

Can your parents put you in a mental hospital?

Your rights may vary by state, but will still conform to any related Supreme Court decisions (see link at end) so there is some continuity in rights across states. The attached links details California policy for adults:http://www.disabilityrightsca.or...To answer your question directly:No, in general, your parents cannot put you in a mental hospital against your will if you are an adult. They would need to call police to determine whether you qualify for an involuntary hold: 1. danger to self, 2. danger to others, or 3. unable to take care of ones self. There is also something called voluntary admission, but you would need to check yourself in. The state can only hold you in involuntary hold for 72 hours at which time a judge would determine your status, with the possibility of a 14 day extension.HOWEVER, if you are a juvenile (which in some cases is define as up to age 24), your rights are much more restricted. I was not able to find the protocol in California in this situation. Google “Youth Legal Services” and you will find centers to go to or call to get a definite answer.*Mental Illness and Supreme Court: Case Summaries
