Sixteen year olds are notorious for not heeding advice of elders. We are old. We don't understand anything about them. How could we, we don't know anything about their life and what they have to deal with. And, for the next couple years, your child will be ten times as smart as you are, or so they believe.When my kids became teenagers, I realized the “do as I say, not as I do” doesn't work anymore. Young teenagers are going to look at everything we do and I criticize it. The only course of action that seemed to have any positive effect was to lead by example.Even as teens, they will watch how you do things, how you react to situations, and do their darndest to convince themselves that they know better. But you can make that difficult for them if you handle things like an adult should and don't let anger and emotion cloud your judgment.At sixteen, you have already had your fifteen years to teach him, now you can only show him or her. But make it fun. Ask your kid to show you how that whole YouTube thing works and ask your kid if he thinks it will be valuable enough that maybe he could teach you and then that can be your new source of income too.Then I would start bringing up the list of bills to be paid and see if your kid thinks YouTube will cover that. Then you can tell them that you think your advice will likely make them some more cash and your only concern is that your kids have enough to be happy.They still have a couple years and chances are they will change their minds more than once before we get to that point.
