But on Wednesday, Variety reported the project is now headed to the new Paramount Plus streaming service with a new plot to boot.

A year ago, WarnerMedia had greenlit a straight to series order for a spin-off of the blockbuster John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John movie.

Origin story: Planned as a one-hour musical, Grease: The Rise Of The Pink ladies will explore how the Pink Ladies came to be at Rydell High and how they changed the school forever

Billed as Rydell High, the show was set to be a High School Musical type of production, according to Variety.

But after big changes atop HBO and HBO Max this summer, the project, which is being developed by Paramount Television Studios, has landed at Paramount Plus.

Fan favorite: The new show will be based on the 1978 musical film that starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John as high school seniors Danny and Sandy

Paramount Plus will debut next year and is a planned re-brand of the current CBS All Access platform as ViacomCBS expands its streaming offerings.

The Grease movie, based on the stage musical of the same name, was released in 1978 and was an instant smash hit.

Blockbuster: Grease held the record for the highest-grossing live-action musical of all time until the release of Les Miserables in 2012 and the soundtrack has sold millions of copies

Travolta and Newton-John starred as Danny and Sandy who enjoy a summer romance and then find themselves as seniors together at Rydell High.

Set in 1858, Danny is a member of the T-Birds greaser gang and the Pink Ladies is a clique of greaser girls.

Anxious to maintain his 'bad boy' image in front of his mates, Danny brushes off Sandy and the rest of the movie is how the two ultimately get back together.

Grease held the record for the highest-grossing live-action musical of all time until the release of Les Miserables in 2012 and the soundtrack has sold millions of copies.

A sequel Grease 2, released in 1982 and starring then unknowns Maxwell Caulfield and Michelle Pfeiffer, turned out to be a bust.

A Grease prequel movie titled Summer Lovin' is also reportedly in the works at Paramount Pictures.

The plot follows the events described in the film's song Summer Lovin', which details how Danny and Sandy first met.
