This has been said a couple of times, but I would like to expand upon it: use a portable voice recorder. You can buy one fairly inexpensively, but there are free recorder apps that work great.Here is my caveat: do not feel that you have to "transcribe" what you write. If you get going with this "talking to yourself" method, you will find that you record a lot of stuff. If you have to listen back to all that while transcribing it, it will take a lot of time. Before long, you will likely abandon it.One of the things you may discover is that there is an interesting effect to talking to a recorder. It almost feels like someone is listening. This listener does not judge. In fact, he agrees with you most of the time! You will get comfortable talking with this guy.You should listen back to your recorder tracks, but I recommend doing it with earbuds while you do something else - clean house, fix a meal, etc. Don't aim for transcription. As you listen, certain points will jump out at you. You will recognize these as key. Jot them down quickly, incl. any particular key words you want to keep. Flesh these notes out later if you wish. But there will be some things that never need to make it to the page at all.The great thing about a recorder is that you can go off on tangents, explore possibilities, etc. without the labor of writing. Use it as a pre-writing tool. Talk as you move about, walk. These tracks are for you alone and can/will be deleted. This method has been a great aid to my writing. If you have a smartphone, you're minutes away from starting. I use and recommend the Recorder Pro app. You can export tracks or email them, rename them, etc. there is a free version that is only limited in its export features.
