16 Years Old What Car Should I Get

Can a 16 year old buy a car...?

No. You can not legally enter in to a contract with anyone under 18. Not even if you have a co-signer. It's too much of a risk to banks because you can terminate the contract anytime if you feel like it since it wasn't a legal contract to begin with.

You can pay cash and buy the car though.

What kind of car should I get my 16 year old son ?

Okay, let me first state that i think you're making a MAJOR mistake buying your son a new car. Take it from a former teen (now 29), who made his parents regret giving him car after car.

Teens are not mentally capable of the responsibilities that come with vehicle ownership. You will be responsible for oil changes, wrecks (which will definitely happen), and upkeep of the car.

When you give a kid a car, you are basically telling them that they don't have to work for what they get, and they will not appreciate the car. Sure, they'll be happy to have it, but they don't truely appreciate the responsibility and value of a vehicle that they do not have a part in paying for.

You may think your son is different, or maybe you are in the position to support him for the rest of his life. My parents constant giving really hindered my development as an adult. They didn't teach me financial responsibility, and as a result I leached off of them until I was 25. It has been very difficult to learn how to take care of myself, even though they were excellent parents in all other area. A lot of parents make this mistake, and I have a lot of friends just like me who can back this up. The proverbial silver spoon is not a good thing!

I guess if you have decided to buy him a new car, there's nothing I can do to stop you. I would however, like you to remember this answer 5 years down the line when you can't get your son to make his own way in life.

My suggestion is to go with your son and select a good used car. Nothing sporty, preferably a 4 door, 4 cylinder family car. Something that is dependable for getting back and forth to work with no frills. Trust me, this is your best option. He is going to be happy to get any car, unless he is already a spoiled brat, in which case he'll whine and cry that it isn't good enough. Find something safe. I do not recommend trucks since they are light in the back and fishtail easily. Find one that is economical so HE will be able to foot the gas bill with a part-time job.

Please, I know you want the best for your son, but take it from someone who has first hand knowledge. DO NOT buy him a new car. He will inevitably wreck whatever you get him, I promise.

What was your dream car at 16 years old?

My “dream car” came from an actual dream I had at 16. I dreamed my parents came to my room and proudly announced I had a new car! When I ran out excitedly to see it, it had mismatched doors held together with duct tape, and was nearly too tiny to fit in (and I’m a relatively small person). When my parents did get me a used car later that year for traveling between college classes and high school, it was a cute little white 1995 Dodge Neon. They nervously said, “I know it’s probably not the car of your dreams…” to which I quickly replied with a big smile, “No, it’s much better!”

What are some good first cars for a 16-year old?

You don't say what country you're in (though maybe the reference to 16 picks out America), but here's a UK answer. You want something small engined so that it is cheap to insure and tax, your kid is less likely to kill themselves in it and it's and cheap to purchase since its likely a young person will have minor dings etc. In the UK, I'd also go for a manual as that's what you would want to pass your test in so that you get a full licence (in the UK, if you pass in an auto you can only drive an auto). It is also harder to find cheap small engined cars in the UK that are also automatic.Popular first cars here are vauxhall corsa, Ford fiesta, Peugeot 206 etc. You would get a cheap one for around £1000 in pretty good condition,  a 1 litre engine will be cheaper to insure etc.I get the impression most Americans would consider such a car too small though.

Should I buy my 16 year old child car?

Buy something that is around $2k but isn't likely to break down in a few months, but if it does would be cheap to fix. Kids are more likely to get in wrecks, thats just a fact, I did when I was young. So tell them this is the one car they get and to take care of it and try to make it last into there college years.

How much should I buy my first car for (16 years old)?

Since your 16 and you have a 3.9 GPA I assume that you will be going to college in roughly two years. Most colleges either don't require cars or don't allow cars for the first year or two; because of this you really only need a car that will last you two years (no one really needs a car throughout college). If i were you, i would buy a car between $1500 and $3500. You can get a decent, reliable car for this price- it will probably have about 100k miles on it and be around 8-10 years old. I would suggest going with a reputable brand car such as a Honda or a Toyota. I also recommend buying a small, 4 door car because smaller cars are cheaper than bigger cars and also required less gas. Also, since insurance is very high for teen drivers get a 4 door car instead of a 2 door car, insurance prices skyrocket when you have a 2 door car and are under 25 years old. Hope that helps!

p.s. avoid dealerships and buy from a private seller to save money, you can find private sellers on sites like craigslist. Also, if you go for 3 years without getting any traffic violation (ticket) your insurance will go down a ton.

goodluck!

Should I get a licence if I’m 16 years old?

Your question is vague.A licence for What?I assume it might be a driver's licence. Unless you're planning to drive some vehicle there's not much point. If you do get a Driver's licence the next thing you'll want to aquire is a vehicle which is a big and expensive thing to buy and maintain.Your friends will take advantage of your generosity and you'll end up being an unpaid taxi driver. I suggest that you wait until you can afford and actually need a vehicle.

Can a 16 year old drive a rental car?

A 16 year old can't drive a rental car, period. It has nothing to do with the state. It's the rental companies' policy. Many companies won't even authorize anyone under 25 to drive their rental cars.

I suppose your parents could rent you a car, and let you drive it without the rental company's knowledge, but if you crashed it, your parents would be personally liable for any damage and/or bodily injury you caused. If having a car to drive to school is a must, it would be better for your parents to rent a car, and let you use their car while yours is in the shop.

Should I buy my 16-year-old daughter her own car?

I’m wondering the same thing for my 16 year old son. I was planning on making him pay for 1/2. Although he knows we can afford it. The car is a very basic manual car. I want him to learn to drive standard. We live in canada and most cars are automatic. However they also have their Swiss citizenship so it is possible they will live or go to school in Switzerland or Germany. manual cars are common there. My son is very responsible. He is a straight A student and he doesn’t party. He spends his free time at the gym. He doesn’t really need a car. However i want to buy him one. Just because I can. I grew up having to buy everything myself and working my ass off. I don’t want that for my kids. My husband grew up in a very wealthy family but his parents didn’t give him anything. As a parent I would like to find the right balance of not spoiling them yet giving them some luxuries that I didn’t have the benefit of as a kid.
