How faithful to the books is the Game of Thrones TV show?
The show is a great rendition of the books. Many knock on the show including myself, but that is for a few specific reasons.The first 3 seasons are rather good. It is a very close interpretation of the books and they include most of the important events from the books. Post season 4 the show starts getting weaker in its plot. Mainly because the book material runs out and the writers are starting to add in their own ideas which is no way near as good as what Martin comes up with.The show has good pace, most have learnt to love the actors even though they may not match their counterparts in the books.The knock on the show is for a few annoying tinkerings they have done. Two major ones are fire immunity to Dany which infuriates many as it makes her into a god, and the Dorne story. They literally destroyed house Martell and put the bratty Sandsnakes in power.Another problem the show has is it has created good and evil characters whilst most in the books are a bit of both. Some more evil than others but noone is absolute good and a hero. The latter seasons of the show have become a bit disney-esque feeding to appetites of fandom and shock value with “Omg Dany killed those despicable evil men and walked out of fire again”. The same goes for White walkers being evil and Dragons being good. In the books they are two sides of the same coin and both can be bad or good. We still don’t know what the Walkers want. Martin has said they are not necessarily evil and there is a point to them which the show obviously does not portray.The show is a great rendition, was a great rendition to be exact, however, they didn’t need to tinker with some plots for no reason. There was always a possibility that the show overtakes the books, and they did not plan ahead. The end result is mediocre latter seasons that do not compare with the first few.I do watch the show, I enjoy it. Its a good hour to waste in the day. I loved the Hardhome episode and Winds of Winter in the latter seasons. They still surprise and entertain you with some action, but they are not Martin, so they do not deliver the same quality and understandably so.
