2001 Ford Focus Cam Belt Change

Should I change the timing belt on my ford focus?

From my experience wait until the change interval to change. I changed mine at 110k and they said it looked fine (but was having another issue so while it was in the shop just did it). I also did the water pump too. and my price was well over $1000 about 3 years ago at a ford dealer.

The downside to doing it now - mechanics notoriously (sorry guys this has been my experience) leave bolts off (belt cover) and don't change things (like valve cover gaskets even though they have 110k miles and the rubber is all brittle) when doing these types or repairs causing oil leaks etc shortly thereafter (down into the sparkplug wells - well you get my dissatisfaction) - that you will have to fix and may be more of hassle on the trip than is worth.

Good price but is screwing around that much with the car just before going on a long trip more or less worrisome to you - I have little faith in other peoples work so I tend to do most thing myself when time and equipment allow because I am the one taking all the risks when it leaves the shop.

A last point 20k miles is about 1/6 sooner so if you had to pay 1/6 more would you do that as well - for no reason?

How do you know when to change a timing belt on a Ford Focus?

I did a quick search on Google and am led to believe that your 2012 focus has a timing chain and not a belt. The timing chain is not a maintenance item, it should last for the life of the engine, for the most part.If I'm wrong and it does have a belt it should be changed by 100,000 miles. If mileage is not available, such as you bought a car with high mileage and you don't know when the belt was last changed, you need to look at it. Any cracking, threading, oil or coolant contamination, fraying, If anything doesn't make you say, “that belt looks brand new” should be evaluated by a professional, or just change it for the piece of mind. Be sure to replace the tensioner and all pulleys the belt rides on including the water pump. This way you can expect everything in there to last for the life of the belt.

Ford Focus - At what mileage should the timing belt be changed?

I am interested in purchasing a Ford Focus between 98-04 and I was wondering does anyone know when the timing belt/cam belt should be replaced?

Thanks in advance....

How hard is it to change a timing belt on a 2000 Ford Focus?

The timing belt is one of the trickier maintenance items that can be done by owners. It’s not hard if you know what you’re doing; but if you don’t, that’s not the place to start.Be sure to read the repair manual and understand how the timing marks work on the crankshaft pulley and the camshaft pulley. Best is if you have a knowledgeable friend who can assist. There is potential for major havoc on your engine if you do it wrong.

When should you change the timing belt on a 1993 Ford Tempo?

You don't. A 1993 Ford Tempo does NOT have a timing belt on it. It uses a timing chain.

To Cooks, NO Ford Tempo engine has EVER used a timing belt EXCEPT the rare '80's models equipped with the Japanese built 2.0L DIESEL. These engines had TWO timing belts. One for the camshaft, and one at the rear of the engine for the fuel injection pump. BUT, the asker DID specify the 2.3L gas engine, so it's a moot point anyway!!!!

DING DING DING Cooks loses!!! Who's putting the foot in his mouth now?!!!!

2009 Ford Focus Timing Belt reolacement?

I have a Ford focus 2009 with 4cylinder 2.0 DOHC engine. I am confused about it and just get confused looking on the net. Three questions :is this a non interference engine that won't likely damage the valves if belt breaks? Does it have a timing belt or chain? If it has a belt when should it be changed? Any answers out there? Owners manual doesn't even mention it nor does scheduled maintance booklet. Thanks

How do you change the throttle body on a Ford Focus?

YouTube is your friend. So are car forums for your specific car model, where many of the mechanical procedures will be outlined. Do some homework and you should be able to find the info. While you’re at it, buy a shop manual for the car.

How do I replace my 2000 Ford Focus Timing Belt?

You don’t.As a mechanic of 15+ years, please take my advice on this one:Serpentine belt, yes. Timing belt, no.A serpentine belt is often confused with the timing belt. It’s on the outside of the engine and is named thus because it serpentines around several pulleys (alternator, power steering, AC compressor, idler, tensioner, water pump, harmonic balancer, etc). This provides power to those pulleys that I just mentioned as well as helps the alternator produce electricity to run the spark plugs and recharge the battery. A typical serpentine belt can be changed with a few tools (sometimes only 1!) and usually in half an hour or less.A timing belt is inside the engine and helps keep the engine in time. “A timing belt, timing chain or cambelt is a part of an internal combustion engine that synchronizes the rotation of the crankshaft and the camshaft(s) so that the engine's valves open and close at the proper times during each cylinder's intake and exhaust strokes.”* This is a much more intense job that requires AT LEAST the timing cover to be removed and the belt must be replaced PRECISELY. If you’re off even ONE tooth, you can possibly ruin an engine if it’s an interference motor. When replacing the timing belt, it’s recommended that you purchase the timing belt kit that includes the timing belt, the timing tensioners, and seals. There’s no point in getting all the way down to the timing belt and not replacing the other parts while you’re right there already. Otherwise, all the labor will need to be duplicated later on to replace these parts if not replaced at the time of belt service. If you don’t know what you’re doing, I HIGHLY recommend NOT replacing your timing belt yourself. You may end up paying a professional to replace your engine instead. Let the pros do what you cannot. A wise person knows their limits and acknowledges them. Take care of the little jobs yourself like air filters, wipers, maybe even oil changes if you don’t mind getting dirty and laying under the car. But let the people who are trained to do the big jobs help you.Good luck!*Timing belt (camshaft) - Wikipedia

2002 ford focus timing belt broke? Engine okay?

Gates lists the 2.0L SOHC as being an interference engine in one document
http://www.gates.com/part_locator/index....

and being a non-interference engine in another
http://www.gates.com/common/downloads/fi...

However the consensus on some Focus forums is that it's indeed a non-interference engine. So you may have dodged a bullet. Chances are you didn't bend any valves, but I wouldn't have tried to restart the engine. Keep in mind your timing belt should've been replaced years/tens of thousands of miles ago. Timing belts don't give you any warning at all that they are about to fail. That's why they have scheduled replacement intervals.

How often do you change a timing belt?

It’s usually somewhere between 60,000 and 90,000 miles. But, it varies by manufacturer and the belt manufacturer. So, read your car’s owner’s manual. It will explain the interval in your the maintenance section.Once you replace it the first time, it may have a longer period for replacement, depending on the belt your mechanic uses. Some of the newer belts have longer lives. Ask your mechanic. It’s really important to change that timing belt on time. Timing belts cannot be seen without taking apart a good bit of the engine and even if you can see it, they do not show wear. They just break. When they break, most engine’s valves contact the pistons and destroy a bunch of good stuff inside your engine. Changing the belt and the water pump on time is just good maintenance.
