247 Sports Recruiting Profile Help

How can a swimmer get recruited for rowing in college?

Start rowing. If you are a senior, it’s already too late, but if you’re a junior do your best to become as good as you can at rowing in the time you have. If you were thinking of just walking on the team once you got there, that won’t get you money.

If a recruiter requests to add me to his/her Linkedin network and doesn't message me prior, what should I do?

Agreed with sending a message to the recruiter before adding them on Linkedin. Note that there are alot of recruiters out there who just takes people's profile and send it to companies who they don't have any relationships with the hope that having a few relevant candidates (who you don't know they are sending your profile) can help establish relationships with that company. This can be a detriment to that candidate when you don't have any intentions of having your profile in the market. As anything within any social networks, even though Linkedin is less 'personal', should always be careful with sharing your information everywhere because there are always ways to find out more about you. I generally don't add random requests on Linkedin unless I feel like they are already connected to someone I know or they have a strong prior working history in the industries that I am involved in. The question is also, unless you're in BD / Sales / Relationship driven-role, how often would you reach out to someone that you have zero contact with for an a job request / question etc. I'm not sure.

What skills are needed to switch roles from being an HR recruiter to being an HR generalist/HR executive?

Here are a list of some key skills I believe you need to be a successful HR Generalist/Business Partner. These are in no particular order and not all inclusive.Quantitative skillsRelationship building and management skillsStrong interpersonal communication skills including influencing skillsCollaborative/Team PlayerAbility to coach and mentor all levels of employeesTrusted advisor to managers/leadersWhen considering a move from a recruiter role or any functional HR role to the generalist/business partner role, you should consider trying to get some or all of these skills in your current job so it is an easier transition. It will also help you know if this is a role that you would enjoy and thrive in.In the HR generalist/business partner role, you are dealing with situations that are not always binary and require judgment. While some of these skills are transferrable from the recruiting role, there will be a bit of a learning curve. It is worth noting that HR Generalist/Business Partner can be different depending on the size, scale and focus of an organization. For example, some HR Generalists/Business Partner roles include employee relations and in others they have a entire function supporting employee relations.I would also recommend finding a mentor who has made the transition or someone you respect currently working as an HR generalist/business partner.

Are certificate courses done on Coursera helpful in getting jobs at product based companies?

(This is a generalized answer applicable to every filed.)Nope, not if you think that your certifications worth anything to the hiring people.Yes, if you really get the concepts and the idea behind the course! In the real world scenario, Coursera ,EdX, Udemy or any other such certificates don’t hold much value to the employers. (even if you have completed them in paid mode!)I, myself, have several of them (I audited the online lectures back then when they were totally free and finished them along with my engineering degree), but no one wants to see it. Rather, I use that precious knowledge to implement ideas in engineering today, as the course quality was pretty good!In short, do them, but don’t dedicate your entire time on them. Just select the ones which might be useful for your career ahead.Good luck. :)

How can I view my LinkedIn profile pictures in full size, and download them?

You only have one LinkedIn Profile Picture. To view your LinkedIn Profile Picture and download it you will need to view your LinkedIn Profile as someone other than yourself. One way you may be able to do this is through an Incognito Window in Chrome or a Private Window in Firefox. Note, sometimes this does not work because LinkedIn is starting to restrict viewing LinkedIn Profiles in private mode. Here is how you may be able to do this:Copy the URL of your LinkedIn Profile while viewing your LinkedIn Profile. (mine is http://www.linkedin.com/in/tlbur...)Get into an Incognito or Private Window and type or paste your LinkedIn Profile into the address line.If LinkedIn does not throw up the ‘authwall’(forcing you to login) you will be able to view your profile, click on the Profile Picture and then right click on the large image and save it to your computer. If you can not do this, you will need to ask another LinkedIn Member to do this for you.Visit my Quora profile to discover more about me.Thanks for the A2ATeddy BurrissLinkedIn Coach & Trainer

What kind of work experience is required prior to pursuing an MBA in India? Should he take up a job in the field he wants to do his MBA? Should he try different industries to determine the best fit?

Thanks for A2A.All genuine questions ... but perhaps not the real question that you should be asking yourself before doing MBA.I will try and answer all of them ..1. Yes relevant work experience is always better than non-relevant work experience. 2. Trying different things at young age never hurts. What really hurts is not being able to convey it on your CV or in the interview appropriately.3. Working in bank is not completely necessary. Corporate Finance or Financial consulting are equally relevant. Ofcourse, back office functions that are completely non-related to finance wont help either.4. 95+ is not a strong CAT score. 98+ (with consistency across sections) is. And, no one expects a fresher to have a a management job role before MBA.5. NGO volunteering is a bit of hoax. And interviewers make that out if its done recently only. I would suggest that learning a new language is a better CV booster and a real asset for the future.6. Well, to bluntly answer prima facie ... the private bank. However, it would all depend on the real job profiles.7. Elite MBA programme in my mind is IIM A, B and C and ISB (only a personal opinion). The requirements are pretty simple for IIMs ... crack the CAT and the interviews. Work experience counts .. but has a smaller weightage. Unless, you work at a brand, it doesnt really count at the IIMs. For ISB, crack the GMAT and have a strong work ex of over 3 years. It helps to have a well-rounded CV. Build ur profile with languages, travelling, sports, etcHope this helped. Now, I would just venture to say that these are very defensive questions. Not the real questions that help you take a decision. The real question is "Why do you want to do an MBA?" This requires a lot of thinking. Be brutally honest to yourself. Answers could be :1. Genuine interest in learning about "business" 2. Meeting 100-400 young intelligent exciting people3. Getting a big dream job4.Taking a break to explore yourself over a period of 1 - 2 years 5. Social prestige6. Proving something to your family members7. Doing it because everyone is doing it etc etc etc ...Be brutally honest. Once you have the master question answered, all other questions are just derivatives. You will answer all the 7 questions you asked differently every single time if your main motive to doing a MBA is different !Hope this really helped ! All the best !

Does MIT have higher academic standards for recruited athletes for non-athletes? The coach refused to recruit my friend because of his 83 in calculus and said that he would otherwise be a very strong candidate. He has a 95 GPA and 34 ACT.

Athletes are held to the same standards, but coaches only get to submit a few names to admissions for their preferences. They have no interest in submitting someone who won’t get admitted, so are quite judicious about it. If some one is truly exceptional (Olympic level or close) then they might be willing to push for them, but again the academic bar is not lowered for anyone. A 34 ACT is pretty meh for MIT (25th percentile) so I’m not sure what “higher academic standard” you are referring to. Admissions statistics | MIT Admissions

What are the preferred universities for an MS in computers in Canada with a GRE score of 305?

As you obviously realise you are just on the margin for entry to your intended course. For a Canadian University (there are many good ones for an MS in Computer Science) the bottom level of GRE is 300.  A mark of 320 is preferred. However, your CGPAis the primary criterion in gaining admission to good universities - particularly to Canadian universities. You must have a good CGPA and a reasonable TOEFL score to be admitted to a Canadian university. There is no quick answer to your question. I suggest you undertake the following procedure. Start at number 20 on the list below and work upwards. Match your entire qualifications against the entry requirements given. As and when you find a match go for it.  1.   McGill University2.   University of British Columbia3.   University of Toronto4.   University of Alberta5.   Université de Montréal6.   McMaster University7.   Queen’s University8.   Simon Fraser University9.   University of Calgary10.Dalhousie University11.University of Waterloo12.Laval University13.University of Manitoba14.Université du Québec15.Carleton University16.Concordia University17.The University of Western Ontario18.University of Ottawa19.University of Victoria20.
