3-year-old Cat Eating A Lot But Losing Weight Just Fur And Bones

My 16 year old cat is losing weight?

My 16 year old cat is losing weight rapidly. A few months ago I started to notice him getting a little skinnier. I didn't think anything of it I just thought maybe cats lose a little weight when they get older. But it has got to the point where when you pet him, you can feel his whole spine. You can feel most of his bones. He has been eating and drinking normally, but he still seems to be losing weight. He falls down sometimes just by the slightest push. He also vomits sometimes. Maybe a couple times a week. We pay a lot of attention to him. He always sleeps by me and purrs really loud. I don't think he's depressed. I really don't know what is going on and I'm very nervous because ive had him my whole life. I am also 16 so I can't take him to the vet. I confronted my mom about it and she said that he is just getting old... I think there might be something else wrong with him. I really want to get him to the vet. How can I convince my mom? 10 points for best answer.
Thanks so much if you took the time to read this and try to help me.

My dog is very ill,11 years old and lost loads of weight. need help please!?

It all started about 3 months ago. In june 2013 I was sent to the gulf working with pipelines. Whilst I was away my dog who's an american staffordshire bull terrier lost loads of weight. Only when I arrived home I noticed exactly how bad he was,his ribs were sticking out and he's got these growths all over him. One is right on his anus. He's got arthritus in his joints and sometimes his back legs collapse under him its awful to watch him decline. First of all I blamed myself for leaving him and that he thought I'd left him. I thought he would get back to normal after I'd been back but this isn't happening. I don't want to take him to a vet as I'm so scared that he won't be coming back with me. We have 2 young children and they love him. I need some serious advice as I'm dreading the day when he's gone and I think that day is close. What can I do? I've owned the dog since a puppy we got him in 2004. He still has appetite but doesn't put weight back on. He cannot even get up the stairs anymore, just lays there in weird positions its horrible to see.

My 16 year old female cat weighs only 4 lbs. I can feel her backbone. She is super thin. Should I be concerned?

Yes you should be worried and you don't say if this has just come about recently weight loss in an elderly cat means health problems and the most common at this age is kidney failure but it can be controlled but not cured with a special diet and tablets,

but that's only if its caught early enough as the kidneys can be damaged without treatment check her gums are they pale or are they yellow? as kidney failure can make the gums yellow due to toxins building up in the body plus liver problems can do the same, but there are many things that can make an older cat lose weight and she needs tests at the vet to find out whats wrong,

so please don't delay in getting her examined at 4Ibs i am surprised she is able to function at all this needs to be treated as urgent,

i lost a cat to kidney failure and she was 15 and very skinny like your cat.

What is the average weight for a 2 year old, spayed female cat?

I have a female cat who is spayed and 2 years old. She is one of 3 cats in our home. The oldest being a neutered male who is 6 and weighs 22 lbs (he is now on a diet seperate from the others), and the other is a 6 month old male unneutered kitten who weighs 6 lbs. We moved six weeks ago from a 2 1/2 bedroom flat to a ranch home with a basement, and plenty of room for the kitties to run. What I am worried about is that the female weighed 15 lbs at the beginning of February, and now in March I can her back bone, ribs and hipbones. She is a domestic long hair, so she looks bigger than she feels, which is confusing me a little. It might be that she is playing a lot with the others, and lost weight that way. However, my six year old cat has lost very little. I had called a vet on the subject and awaiting a call back. Can anyone advise me what I should do until then?

Thanks!

7-8 week old kitten not eating for 3 days! Going on day 4...?

If it was pancreatitis, pancreatic enzymes in her blood chemistry would have been abnormal and very high. She sounds like a kitten with a URI, reduced hunger, lethargy, etc. She may not be emiting discharge from eyes or nose and she may not be sneezing, she definitely has something going on. Fishy canned cat food, warmed for 8 seconds, shredded chicken, and stage 1 meat only baby food, also slightly warmed for 8 seconds, are all options for anorexic cats.

Did she get subcutaneous fluid boluses, multiple small pockets of LRS, under her skin, before they sent her home? Ensure you keep her warm, as not eating and losing weight tends to lead to them being hypothermic.

Tempt her to eat. At this point, it's not you unnecessarily fussing. It's saving your kitten's life, and some respond to stimulation to feed. And where there's 1 flea, there's eggs and larva already laid and waiting to mature, as well as more adult fleas. Check your other cat closely and treat her. The kitten isn't strong enough right now for topical flea treatment, such as Revolution, but when she feels better this should be started. If they gave her multiple medicines (dewormer, mite treatment, flea prevention, etc) while she's been doing so poorly, this was poor judgment on their part, and seeking another doctor is recommended.

Another professional evaluation, especially listening to her lungs and examining her eyes, ears, and nose, checking for a respiratory infection. Having parasites can make them feel puny, but an anorexic, unwell kitten should not get ivermectin for ear mites, or any other meds, until their health is improved. Look for a hospital with multiple, descriptive positive feedback's on your local consumer reporting website, such as citysearch, yelp, community forum or others.

What is the best diet for a 13 year old toothless cat?

Note: Originally answered on December 1, 2016.Original Question: What is the best diet for a 13 year old toothless cat?My 13-year-old cat is toothless from a gum infection 5 years ago when the veterinarian removed her teeth and we treated her with antibiotics.Currently, she is active, she healthy fur, she is loving, vocal, and affectionate. She does not pee or poop outside of the litter box. However, she throws up 2 or 3 times a week and has periods where she sleeps more than normal. She is quite a thin and small cat. She always has been thin -- but she is especially thin because of her lack of teeth.I feed her standard grocery store canned wet food once or sometimes twice a day. She also eats dry food, but in very small quantities because it takes her time to break down the food. I still feed her dry food because of her low weight and so that she will have food available.I would like to find an ideal diet for her to live healthy and long, with the right foods to prepare, food brands, or supplements that may be beneficial.Thank you for readingMy Answer:Given that the leading health problem with elderly cats is kidney disease, I strongly advise that you put her on a prescription renal formula cat food. Our cat, Aries, is on KD renal formula, both dry and wet. And has been since the 20 year cat we lost in 2014 was first diagnosed 6 years earlier. We took Aries, who will be 15 on January 1st, in last week for a full geriatric check-up. As suspected he's suffering with arthritis and also, sadly, has developed a heart murmur and is in the beginning stages of kidney failure. But, continuing with the right food and the addition of three new medications, two to support his heart and kidneys, and a once weekly shot for pain, he's doing much better. We are hoping to have him as long as we did his big sister. And yes, prescription food from the vet is more expensive, but if you can swing it, is well worth it. No offense intended, but grocery store foods are generally garbage.

My 16 year old cat is in good health (nothing found on vet exam) but is slowly losing weight. What can I feed him to help him to gain weight?

When my dear, recently departed Kita kitty began to turn his nose up food, I started looking for anything to meet that 220 calories a day a lazy, old cat needs.Gravy was a big hit, but most premade gravies have some sort of onion in it, as does most store bought stocks. Onion can prove fatal to both cats and dogs. Both are also very high in salt. I ended up roasting chicken on Saturday. I'd pull most of the meat off, make gravy with the drippings, and overnight crock pot the rest for a rich chicken stock. This was about 90% of his diet his last year….plus, whatever else he would eat that was safe for him. Seafood was popular. My husband & I did rather plan our meals around his, but after all those years, we were glad to do it.Prior to the ‘ people food stage’, we had the ‘variety of different cat foods” stage. If we found a hit, we kept the can long enough to be able to buy more. He’d tire of one, we'd try another. There are also tubes of high calorie nutritional pastes you can buy. They are quite expensive, and I have never met a cat that liked it. You have to put it on their paw, where they will hopefully just lick it off out of frustration. Mine just flicked it off.I’m glad your vet has given the all clear, but if this poor appetite continues, consider a second opinion. Mine was misdiagnosed by a vet as early kidney failure. Every cat over about ten has some kidney issues, but that vet missed a bigger, more serious problem. My cat was hyper thyroid. Also common in older cats. Kita would died had that first vets receptionist not have been so rude that we found another vet. It was just a little bit of medicine every day. He lived, lived really well, five more years. You have to re do the lab work too. We had five years to be glad we did. This is Kita, a month before he passed. We were really struggling to get him to eat then. He was profoundly senile, which also impaired his appetite. He was a happy old guy though.

Is it unhealthy for cat to weigh 16 lbs. at 3 yrs old?

Depends on the boning and size of the cat - larger breeds like a Maine Coon or Ragdoll would be 18+ for males. I had a domestic that was 14-15 lbs of solid muscle but he was tall and long and not fat. Average males are about 9-12 lbs, so your cat may be over weight.
