4 37 Mile For A Freshmen

What is a good time to run 5 miles in?

Ignore all the bragging!Just to run a full 5 miles is an achievement. For a 20yo in good shape, (and I don't mean a regular runner, just not morbidly obese or suffering from any illness,) a time of 40 min or less would be pretty good. In fact, for a non runner of any age, 10 min per mile would be OK as a start point. Keeping that up for 5 will take at least a bit of training. From day one of your running, it would take about 6 weeks, running 3–4 times per week, to knock 25% off your initial time. But you wouldn't start off with the full 5 miles. If you take it seriously, there's no reason why you shouldn't be aiming for a much quicker time. But take your time and get a good training plan or you'll end up injuring yourself.

Break 5 minute mile freshman track season?

hi,
i'm a freshman, 14 years old, 5'6" and 114 lbs. ive been training a considerable amount this winter which consists of 2 speed workouts a week, 1 long run, 45 minute runs, swimming three times a week after running and usually sunday off or swim. I ran a 5:51 last april of my 8th grade year in track, ran cross country in the fall, got my time down to 5:37 a month and a half ago and now run a 5:22 on a indoor track a few days ago. do you guys think i could break 5 when this upcoming track season starts? and what would you think i could run my senior year? ohh and my 5k pr is 19:34 if that helps any..sorry for typing so much.
thanks. :)

Whats a really good freshman 2 mile time?

First of all, @4:28 Freshman Mile.
Are you in college? If you 3 people are in high school, you people will set world records. Those TWO freshmen got below a 10 minute 2 mile? You got a 4:28 Freshman mile? All three of you as freshmen had a mile in the 4s? That's insane. I have never seen that in any high school XC race or high school track meet. And, I'm in college now. I've been joining XC and Track meets since I was in 7th grade. If you three are in college, that would make sense.

Btw, I'm pretty sure the poster is a fresman in high school.

Now, @Crazyness745.
If you're just beginning Cross Country in high school, then 14:05 is pretty good. It's really good considering it wasn't "all out". You're just starting. I'm sure you're not in the best shape you could be. And you're not training for 2 miles, you're training for 3 miles in cross country. So, that will also affect your 2 mile time.

These other people are talking about track. What we're talking about is cross country. If you train for the 2 mile, I'm sure you could get to a 2 mile in the 11s. However, you'll be training for 3 miles. You could probably get 11 minute 2 mile in the Track & Field season.

In the beginning, most people aren't in their best shape (most don't run over the summer), but a 14:00 2 mile, as a beginner, shows a lot of potential.

You have the potential to run a 3 mile in 19:00 or faster by the end of the Cross Country season.

14:30 or faster. If you run with this time at the beginning, you can get to top JV by the end of the season.

13:30 or faster. If you run this time at the beginning of XC, you'll make top JV or Varsity by the end of the season.

12:00 or faster. If you get this time at the beginning of XC, you're already in Varsity.

Mile times?

I know there's a lot of people out there who have to run the mile in school. And are timed. So...? What's your time? Mine's pretty high and I want to compare. Also, if you feel comfortable saying so, mention your age. But you don't have to.

How fast can you run a 1/4 mile?

Well, first I want to address Emily, if you would have really ran a 37 second 1/4 mile then you would not only have the fastest women 1/4 mile time, but you would have the fastest MALE 1/4 mile time. The current world record for A GUY is like 43 seconds, for a girl it is like 47 seconds.

58 seconds is a very good time.... depending on your age and gender. If you are a freshman and that was set in practice or one of your 1st races then that is good, but if you are a senior........ well then that's not a scholarship time. If you are a girl then that is an absolutely outstanding time regardless of your age. I am a freshman and I haven't raced in the 400m/1/4 mile ever, but during an xc race my 1st 400 was about 59 and I am a freshman (Guy). 58 seconds is a pretty solid time and with hard work and dedicated training you could problably get in the low 50's. A kid at my school ran a 51 second 400 (guy) and got to run in college because of it. Currrently our school's fastest runner is about 54 seconds (guy), so you are doing very well. Just so you know the 400 meter race and the 1/4 mile are basically identical, the 1/4 mile is like 2 meters longer though. So keep training and you will have a very good track season!

How hard can it be to do a 5 mile run in 40 minutes?

If you're not physically active, or if you're old, or if you're overweight, it can be quite hard. Five miles in 40 minutes calculates to an eight minute mile, which for the average person, is pretty fast.Even if you ARE physically active, it can only take you so far. My sister has been playing soccer her whole life and has run cross country for the past year and still hasn't broken an eight minute mile, much less done it five times in a row.On the other hand, at the top of my game I can run five miles in just over 35 minutes, which is about a seven minute mile pace, and I and my sister have similar athletic backgrounds.Ethnicity, despite what people will try and tell you, does have an effect as well. Both the male and female marathon Olympic record are held by Kenyans, and Ethiopians have won the most gold medals for the marathon of any country. If you're from Africa, you likely have more fast switch muscles, so speed will be easier for you. Also, these guys are running sub five miles. For 26 miles. A forty minute 5 mile would be a warmup for them.If you're an average American, you probably won't be able to run that pace right now, but if you discipline yourself and find a good training program, I believe it would be entirely possible to build up to it over the course of several months.Good luck. :)Edit 3/11: my sister has broken an eight minute mile! Her record is now 7:41.

Could I go from a 7:14 mile to a 4:55 mile in 6 months?

It is incredibly unlikely (and I'd guess impossible if the starting time was a pretty honest effort) though I don't think I can technically call it impossible (only because I can't say that under perfect conditions with the most pristine subject it isn't possible). Though I've never seen anything close to it done. I had a pretty steep improvement curve. At the end of 6th grade I had run 7:03 (starting at 8:34 at the beginning of that session which was about 4 months long). That number isn't crazy different from the total time that you are trying to take off, but... The lower your times are the harder it gets. Going from 6:00 to 5:00 can take a year or more for most people. Going from 5:00 to 4:30 can take just as long and sometimes longer. 4:30 to 4:15, well a lot of people will never get to that point (not to say that it isn't a reasonable for a well trained runner). So to continue with the anecdote, I didn't run 4:55 until January of my freshman year of high school. Recall that 7:03 happened in June while i was in 6th grade. That's around 30 months and I went from being short and a bit round at the start to a pretty normal looking freshman distance runner. I mention that because when you're not in good shape (and never have been in terms of mid distance running) you can improve quickly. I easily improved faster than everyone in my county but even still it took about 2.5 years to get the kind of improvement that you're asking about. But I wish you the best in your training and I hope you get as much out of yourself as you can. I'm sure this wasn't the answer you wanted and I think it's important to mention that you shouldn't throw all the eggs at the wall to prove me wrong, the eggs are likely to break. But I at least hope the answer was helpful.

Wahts a good mile time for a 14 year old?

A good but not great time would be 8 minutes for girls and 7 minutes for boys. The best your likely to see is 6 minutes for girls and 5 minutes for boys. The four minute mile for a 12 year old girl is straight-up impossible. That's slightly less then thirty seconds per two hundred meters the whole way. Running that fast all-out is pretty much unheard of for that age and gender, let alone such a mile time.

If you running at 8 minutes, you doing well. Seven's would put you among the best in your school and six's competitive. I am a 14 year old male my mile record is 5:37. I could probably run 5:20 but haven't down it for time in a while. The fastest mile for a boy in my school is 5:10 and 6:03 for a girl, but both were unstoppable racers. I am on the top five but nothing fantastic in that event.

My best advice for cutting it down is to run. If you join a track or cross country team, just from running you will get faster. Since it's summer and that might not be an option, just run. But be sure to run often.

Besides just running as you feel comfortable, you don't need to do much specific stuff until you ability starts to peak out. If you like to run and just go run, you can take a lot of time off you mile very quickly before improvement starts to slow down. Even then, you tend to get faster just from growing older.

Good luck and be sure to have fun with it.
