How do I prepare for PG entrance test (Political Science) in University of Hyderabad?

Political science (PS) entrance exam(PG) in University of Hyderabad when compared to other subjects is bit easy to crack. Its better to know the exam pattern before planning on the preparation strategy.  The written test for admission to M.A. Political Science consists of 100 questions of multiple choice ( one mark each),which includes questions from the sub-disciplines of PS, general knowledge and English comprehension. going by the previous years question pares there would be two parts Part-A consists questions from the core subject and general knowledge and Part-B consists of Comprehension, in this you have to read few passages and answer questions. sub disciplines of political include 1) International Relations, 2) Comparative Politics, 3) Indian Government and Politics 4) Public Policy/Administration 5) political theoryknowing basics of political science would be enough to answer the questions in exam, for example the writings n thoughts of thinkers like Plato, Aristotle, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Karl Marx. any good book book can provide relevant information n it also depends on time. when it comes to public administration know about the thinkers n their contributions and writings, books like administrative thinkers by Prasad n Prasad would help. Questions from Indian constitution are covered under head of Indian government and politics. even for this basics are enough, I suggest Indian constitution by Laxmikant (mind you this is only for examination purpose n you don't hv to read the entire book).  For international relations knowing the history of world in the 20th c would help. for example read about two world wars ( causes, consequences, major players n imp events), cold war, post cold war, formation of UN etc.. English comprehension part is bit easy with lengthy paragraphs n qns will be asked from those paragraphs or extracts or whatever, there is no need for separate preparation unless you are not good in English. Those who are preparing for competitive examinations like civils another exams just go through basics of political science.Anyways to get an understanding of the level of questions that are being asked n to get familiar go through previous question papers which available on  the University website. http://igmlnet.uohyd.ac.in:8000/... Hope this answer helps you :)

What was it like to grow up in Canada during the Cold War?

When I was a kid, about 9-11 years-old in the mid eighties, I used to worry a lot about nuclear war, because I often heard about the arms race on the news. There was also a really scary movie called The Day After that aired in 1983, it was about a nuclear holocaust, and everyone died. I read details to the effect that if New York City was nuked, the blast would be felt all the way to Quebec City, where I lived. Everything would be on fire (I'm somewhat skeptical of that now.) I thought to myself that nuclear war almost seemed inevitable. The United States and The Soviet Union were so at odds, and the communists seemed so intent on spreading their "revolution" that I couldn't see how it couldn't happen. I used to wonder to myself: if we're all destined to die in a nuclear war, what I am doing wasting my time in school? I won't need all this education. I would tell myself well, if we make it to the mid-nineties without a nuclear war, maybe we'll have gotten over the hump. I would tell myself that to make myself feel better. I was so worried about nuclear war that my speech for the public speaking contest in Grade 4 was about nuclear war. And, oddly enough my husband did it on the same topic when he was in the same grade. Nuclear war was a subject that loomed large in the minds of news-conscious children and adults.  It was a great source of anxiety. Most of the time, though, the Cold War manifested itself in sport and popular culture. Popular culture had movies that were based very much in the Cold War, like Rocky IV. In sports, there were a number of events that pitted Communists against Capitalists, like the Olympics, or the Canada-Russia series in hockey. You cheered for the capitalist countries because the communists were bad, and everyone knew they cheated, either through doping, political pressure or crooked judges. The Fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 was one of the happiest days in my memory. I felt like finally, all this worrying could come to an end. Perestroika and glasnost took a big edge off the tensions in the Cold War in 1986 or so, but with end of the Berlin Wall, and the liberalization of Communist countries, we knew that the Eastern Bloc was not going back.
